Questions asked to Shaykh Saleh ibn Ghunam as-Sadlaan [May Allaah preserve him] after Salaat al-‘Asr in his Masjid, Riyadh

Question: I work for a company that sells mobiles phones and the company forces it workers to sell phones with mobile phone insurance, what it the ruling on this?

Shaykh Saleh: Meaning the person sells mobile phones with insurance and people are buying the phone with the insurance?

Questioner: Yes, Shaykh

Shaykh Saled: This is permissible.

Question: What is the meaning of Mawlaahum in the Quran?

Shaykh Saleh: Which particular Ayaat are you talking about?

Questioner: The questioner asked in general, Oh Shaykh.

Shaykh Saleh: Mawlaa means when people take something to protect them or to trust in it for your affairs or ally with it. Usually the term refers to something that protects and guards them but if you bring a particular Ayaah then we can give a more detailed explanation.

Question: Is it permissible to teach English to students whose purpose of learning English is to work in interest based banks?

Shaykh Saleh: You are not teaching them interest; your job is to teach them English so this is permissible. Whether the person works in a bank or not, this has nothing to do with you, the teacher has nothing to do with what the student does with what he has learned. So teaching them English has nothing to do with them working in interest based banks.

Question: Is it permissible to single out Friday or Saturday for the six fasts of Shawwal?

Shaykh Saleh: Yes this is permissible. If a person wants to fast these six days and he is only able to fast Fridays or Saturdays then there is no problem with this. It is better to fast Friday with Saturday, as none of the scholars denied that this is OK, but if you single out Friday or Saturday then this is OK because your intention is not to single out these days because of a special virtue in them, rather your intention to fast the days of the month. But if you wanted to single out these days to fast then this is not allowed and it can also be an innovation.

Question: Is Abu Ishaaq al-Huwaynee from the people of knowledge?

Shaykh Saleh: Is he here?

Shaykh Saleh: Some people have said things about him and he has reservations but these reservations aren’t major, he is a student of knowledge.
