Definition of a God (Part 2)

Ibn al-Qayyim [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

‘Al-Ilaah’ (i.e. God) is something that your heart turns to with love, magnifying it and consoles itself in. It respects this deity, extoling it, humble with its manners towards it, submitting, fearing, hoping and relying upon it. End Quote.

Ibn Rajab [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

‘Al-Ilaah’ (i.e. God) is something that you obey in its commandments and you abstain from what it prohibits. Something you give extreme status and glorification to, loving it, fearing it, hoping and relying upon it. You ask it in your supplication and you don’t avert any of these things to anything besides it - Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted.

So whoever directs any of these sole to other than Allaah from the creation then he has committed Shirk, his sincerity towards the statement, ‘There is no God but Allaah’ becomes infected and this level of sincerity becomes more severe depending upon the degree of Shirk this person continues to commit. End Quote.

Fath al-Majeed: Chapter: The Prohibition of Reviling the Weather and What to Say When Being Overwhelmed by It

It is narrated on the authority of Ubayy bin Ka’b [may Allaah be Pleased with him] that the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said:

Do not revile the wind (i.e. the weather)! If you see something you do not like say:

اللهم إنا نسألك من خير هذه الريح وخير ما فيها ، وخير ما أمرت به ، ونعوذ بك من شر هذه الريح وشر ما فيها وشر ما أمرت به

Oh Allaah! I ask You for the good of this wind, the good of whatever it brings and the good that it has been commanded to come with.

And I seek refuge in You from the bad of it, the bad of what it brings and the bad of what it has been commanded to come with.

[Reported by at-Tirmidhee (2252) and classed as Saheeh by al-Albaanee in Saheeh at-Tirmidhee]

The prohibition of cursing the wind (or the weather in general) is because the bellow it comes with is from the Command of Allaah, the Most High. He Created it and Commanded it to come. So cursing the weather is like cursing the One Who Created it and Commanded to come, Allaah, the Glorified.

Similar to prohibition of cursing and reviling time, this is similar to it.
There is none that curses the weather or time except that they are ignorance of Allaah, His Religion, His Sharee’ah and the correct manner to worship Him.
In this Hadeeth, the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him]  has prohibited the People of al-Emaan to utter statements of such ignorance and abuse. He guided them to what was obligatory upon them, so that if one is faced with testing weather conditions they should supplicate:

اللهم إنا نسألك من خير هذه الريح وخير ما فيها ، وخير ما أمرت به ، ونعوذ بك من شر هذه الريح وشر ما فيها وشر ما أمرت به

Oh Allaah! I ask You for the good of this wind, the good of whatever it brings and the good that it has been commanded to come with.
And I seek refuge in You from the bad of it, the bad of what it brings and the bad of what it has been commanded to come with.
What this supplication means is that if one is faced with testing weather conditions, rather than reviling and cursing, one should hasten back to Tawheed (the Oneness of Allaah) and supplicate to Him by saying, “Oh Allaah!...”

Also, this supplication instils the worship of Allaah, Obedience to Him and His Messenger. It closes the doors to evil thoughts and words, and upholds gratitude in the slave for all the favours and blessings that He has Given to the People of at-Tawheed and al-Emaan. Their state differs to the people of sin and transgression, those who have been forbidden to taste the sweetness of at-Tawheed and the realities of al-Emaan.

[Fath al-Majeed Sharh Kitaab at-Tawheed (Pg. 305)]

Note: there is a difference between the one who intends to curse the weather and the one who intends to describe the weather with its negative characteristics:

Shaykh Muhammad bin Saaleh al-‘Uthaymeen [may Allaah have Mercy on him] explained:

Cursing time (or the weather) is of three types:

1)     The person wishes to describe and characterise time (or the weather) and this is permissible…because “Actions are by intentions”.

This is similar to the Words of Allaah about Loot [Peace be upon him]:

هَذَا يَوْمٌ عَصِيبٌ

"This is a distressful day."” [Hood 11:77]

2)    Cursing time (and the weather) with the belief that it is time (or the weather) by itself causes good or bad to occur (not Allaah). This is major Shirk which expels the person with such beliefs outside the fold of al-Islaam because this person with such beliefs, believes that there is something other than Allaah (or equal to Him) controlling the universe. This belief has the exact same ruling as someone who believes that it is permitted to worship others besides Allaah.

3)  One curses time (or the weather) not with the belief that it itself brings about good or bad but maintains the belief that Allaah is the One Who Controls it and Sent it. Despite this, he curses and reviles it because of the harm and disliked he finds within it. This is category is Haraam. Although one doesn't reach the level of committing Shirk in this case, the one who says such things is guilty of being rude, misguided and not possessing any intellect. This is because the person is actually cursing and reviling Allaah, the Glorified, because it is Allaah Who is the One Who Controls time (and sends the weather). He Controls the universe as He Pleases, the good and the bad that occurs happens by His Leave. It is not time (or the weather)  which possess the ability to cause harm or bring about good by themselves. Despite all of this, the person is still a Muslim (albeit a deficient one) as they have not cursed or reviled Allaah, the Most High, directly.

Fath al-Majeed: The Definition of a God

Shaykh al-Islaam [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

An Ilaah (God) is something that is worshipped and obeyed, it is a deity that we turn to, deserved of our worship. It is the deity that deserves to be attributed with perfection which will create love for the one worshipping it. It creates humility for the one who worships Him.

So a deity is something that is loved, worshipped, a thing that the hearts are turned to with love. A thing that makes the hearts tranquil and filled with humility towards it. A thing that the worshippers fears but is also balanced with hope in it. You return to this deity when times are difficult and you supplicate to it with whatever concerns you. A deity which is the object of you reliance and you seek from it assistance. A deity is something you resort to and you find peace when remembering it.

You live loving it and nothing can comprise all of these except Allaah Alone, therefore we submit and testify with the statement, ‘There is no God but Allaah’, the truest of statements.

Those who believe in this statement and uphold it are the party of Allaah and they deny and reject anything that conflicts the statement they ardently believe in.

If you truly uphold this statement in yourself then all your affairs will become easy and you will truly taste the sweetness of what it means to say it. If you have not actualised its meaning and not upheld it in your life then you are a deprived slave and it becomes obligatory upon you to learn and live by it. End Quote.

Meaning of Laa Ilaha Ila Allaah; Evidence for Negation and Affirmation

The meaning of ‘Laa Ilaaha Ila Allaah’ or ‘There is no god but Allaah’ means that there is no god worthy of worship except Allaah and this has been mentioned in various places in the Quraan.

This statement that defines the declaration of faith that one has, consists of negation (denial of any diety worthy of worship except Allaah) and affirmation (the sole object of worship). This has been mentioned by al-Haafith Ibn Hajar where Allaah, the Most High, says:

And your Ilah (God) is One Ilah (God - Allah), La ilaha illa Huwa (there is none who has the right to be worshipped but He), the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.” [al-Baqarah 2:163]

And,

And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad  ) but We inspired him (saying): La ilaha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allah)], so worship Me (Alone and none else)."” [al-Anbiyaa’ 21:25]

And,

And to 'Ad (people, We sent) their brother Hud. He said: "O my people! Worship Allah! You have no otherIlah (God) but Him. (La ilaha ill-Allah: none has the right to be worshipped but Allah). Will you not fear (Allah)?"” [al-‘Araaf 7:65]

The response they gave to him was…

They said: "You have come to us that we should worship Allah Alone and forsake that which our fathers used to worship…?."” [al-‘Araaf 7:70]

And,

That is because Allah He is the Truth (the only True God of all that exists, Who has no partners or rivals with Him), and what they (the polytheists) invoke besides Him, it is Batil (falsehood) And verily, Allah He is the Most High, the Most Great.” [al-Hajj 22:62]

So these Ayaat (and many others like it) clearly illustrate that worship for other than Allaah has been nullified and that worship can only be something affirmed to belong to Allaah, Alone, without any partners. In fact, the Qur’aan from beginning to the end emphasises this meaning and guides us to it.

Based on this, all forms of worship start from the acts of worship one does in the heart, whether it be the worship of love, or humility to Allaah, or submission to Allaah, or fear in Allaah or having hope in Allaah. All of these are examples of worship of the heart that belong to Allaah, the Most High, Alone. If anyone fails to single any of these out to Allaah Alone then they have created a partner with Allaah and the rest of their deeds, whether statement of action, will not be accepted.

Hadeeth ‘Ubaadah; ‘Whoever Bears Witness to Laa Ilaaha Ila Allaah’

On the authority of ‘Ubaadah bin Saamit [May Allaah be Pleased with him] who said that the Messenger of Allaah [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said, “Whoever bears witness that there is no God worthy of worship except Allaah, he does not have partners with him (i.e. does not do Shirk) and that Muhammad is His Slave and His Messenger, that ‘Esaa is the Slave of Allaah and His Messenger and that he is the word of Allaah that was breathed into Maryam, that Jannah is real, then this person will enter Jannah because of (what he believed and) his deeds.”

Al-Qurtoobee [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said in al-Mufahham ‘ala Saheeh Muslim:

It is not sufficient that one bears witness to the Shahaadah with his tongue and that they testify to it, rather they must believe this in their hearts and implement it therein. This is where many groups have erred such as the Murji’ah (those who believe that doing good or bad deeds has no impact on the level of the faith of a person).

They (the Murji’ah) believe that merely affirming the Shahaadah upon the tongue is sufficient for one to be declared as a believer.

However, this Hadeeth proves that such a belief is wrong, moreover this false belief leads in the spread of corruption through the Sharee’ah as it dictates that hypocrisy (doing actions of a believer but actually disbelieves in Islaam in the beliefs they hold) is acceptable. Those (hypocrites) who merely testify with their tongue will be therefore considered as having Eemaan despite their hearts nullifying it.

Imaam an-Nawawee [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

This Hadeeth is one of the greatest Ahadeeth which discuss the issue of ‘Aqeedah. This is because the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] clearly outlined those who are included within Islaam and those taken out of it; the disbelief that results from having differences of opinions in ‘Aqeedah and being mistaken in it.

Concise words of the Prophet of a situation that applies to all of them.[Fath al-Majeed Sharh Kitaab at-Tawheed (Pg 23-24)]

Tafseer of the Aayah: For Them There is Security and They are The Guided

It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah and worship none but Him Alone) and confuse not their belief with Zulm (wrong i.e. by worshipping others besides Allah), for them (only) there is security and they are the guided.” [al-An’aam 6:82]

Ibn Jareer At-Tabaree [May Allaah have Mercy on him] narrated that Anas bin Maalik [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said about this Aayah:

Those who will have protection are those who have Eemaan and Ikhlaas for Allaah Alone. End quote.

Ibn Katheer [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said in his Tafseer:

Meaning, those who make worship for Allaah Alone, do not practice Shirk in the slightest, then they will be protected on the Day of Judgement. They are the guided ones in the Dunyaa and the Aakhirah. End quote.

Zayd bin Aslam [May Allaah be Pleased with him] and Ibn Ishaaq [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said about this Aayah:

This is a favour from Allaah upon Ibraheem [May Allaah be Pleased with him]. Tawheed is what divided him and his very own people, those who rejected him. End quote.

Ibn Mas’ood [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said about this Aayah:

When this Aayah was revealed, the Companions become overwhelmed with worry. They asked themselves, “Who does not oppress himself?” So they asked the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] worriedly and he replied, “Have you not here the statement of Luqmaan:

Verily! Joining others in worship with Allah is a great Zulm (wrong) indeed?” [Luqmaan 31:13]  End quote.

‘Umar bin al-Khattab [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said, “The one who will be protected from all forms of punishment are those who abstain from sinning.”

Hasan al-Basree and al-Kalbee [May Allaah have Mercy on them] both said, “Those who are protected in the hereafter and they are those who are guided in the Dunyaa.”

Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

Those who are filled with fear are those who are afraid of falling into the form of oppression mentioned here, which is Shirk. Their fear is of losing the protection that the people of Tawheed will have, thus ending up misguided and unprotected. This state of negligence is not the state of anyone except those who oppresses themselves.

Therefore the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] explained to the Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them all] that the oppression mentioned in the Book of Allaah refers to Shirk, and as a consequence, those who oppress themselves with Shirk will not be guided unless they protect themselves via Tawheed. Resulting in them being from those who are guided.

Then We gave the Book the Qur'an) for inheritance to such of Our slaves whom We chose (the followers of Muhammad  ). Then of them are some who wrong their ownselves, and of them are some who follow a middle course, and of them are some who are, by Allah's Leave, foremost in good deeds. That (inheritance of the Qur'an), that is indeed a great grace.” [Faatir 35:32]

This Aayah shows that even if one was sinful and he oppressed himself by sinning, without repenting, then he will still have this protection via the virtue of Tawheed (as he did not fall into any form of Shirk).

So it is clear; if a believer (who has Tawheed) dies then he will enter Jannah even if he commits all the sins in the world. This means that it is absolutely imperative and a condition for one to enter Jannah and for one to be guided to the straight path, the one that has no reward except Jannah, that they have and die upon Tawheed.

The Purpose of Creation is That We Have Tawheed of Allaah: We Make Him Our Object of Worship Alone

And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone).” [adh-Dhaariyaat 51:56]

Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said in defining worship:

“Worship is to do acts of obedience to Allaah, whether they are commands which are obligatory upon us or recommended.”

He also said, “Worship includes every single deed that Allaah Loves (meaning what He has Legislated in His religion), seeking His Pleasure in your speech and deeds, in your inner and outer selves.”

Ibn al-Qayyim [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

Worship is connected to ones tongue and limbs all of which stems from ones hearts (i.e. it includes your speech, deeds and beliefs).

Al-Qurtubee [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

Worship has two components; that you humble and submit yourself.

So the meaning of the Aayah is that Allaah, the Most High, has informed us of the purpose of creation and the reason for why you exist; to worship Him Alone. This is from the wisdom of our creation.

Ibn Katheer [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said about this Aayah:

Worship is to obey Allaah by fulfilling His Commands upon you and to leave what He has Prohibited. This, in essence, is the religion of al-Islaam. Therefore, the meaning of Islaam is to submit yourself to Allaah, the Most High.

This submission must comprise of humility towards Him, obedience and total compliance (TN: These are three characteristics which define worship, others from the scholars added a fourth, which is love. Therefore, if any of these is directed at other than Allaah in its totality, then the object has become the deity being worshipped).

Ibn Katheer [May Allaah have Mercy on him] also stated in his Tasfeer:

The meaning of this Aayah is that Allaah Created the creation to worship Him Alone, without having any partners. Whoever obeys Him in this, He Will Reward them with the greatest of rewards and whoever disobeys Him in this then He Will Punish them with the severest of torments.

At the same time, He has told us that despite the command of worship upon us, He is not in any need of us or our worship towards Him. Rather, we are the ones who are poor servants in front of Him. He is the One Who is Rich and Provides the creation with their sustenance and rectifies their affairs.

‘Alee ibn Abee Taalib [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said about this Aayah (51:56), “This Aayah commands us to worship Him Alone and to supplicate to Him Alone.”

Mujaahid [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said in Tafseer of this Aayah, “We have not been created except that Allaah gives us Commands and Prohibitions.”

Shaykh al-Islaam [May Allaah have Mercy on him] commented after quoting Mujaahid: this explanation of the Aayah is more precise based on the Aayah:

Does man think that he will be left Suda [neglected without being punished or rewarded for the obligatory duties enjoined by his Lord (Allah) on him]?” [al-Qiyaamah 75:36]

The Meaning of at-Tawheed

Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

At-Tawheed that the Messengers came with reinforces the Lordship of Allaah; that it is for him Alone. They came witnessing the Shahaadah 'There is no God except Allaah', meaning there is no god worthy of worship except Allaah. This statement means that we rely (or have Tawakkul) upon none but Him, we do not seek assistance except from Him, we do not ally or have enemies except for His Sake; in general, we do not do any deed except for His Sake.

"And your Ilah (God) is One Ilah (God - Allah), La ilaha illa Huwa (there is none who has the right to be worshipped but He), the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful." [al-Baqarah 2:163]

And,

"And Allah said (O mankind!): "Take not ilahain (two gods in worship, etc.). Verily, He (Allah) is (the) only One Ilah (God)" [al-Nahl 16: 51]

And,

"And whoever invokes (or worships), besides Allah, any other ilah (god), of whom he has no proof, then his reckoning is only with his Lord. Surely! Al-Kafirun (the disbelievers in Allah and in the Oneness of Allah, polytheists, pagans, idolaters, etc.) will not be successful." [al-Mu'minoon 23:117]

And,

"And ask (O Muhammad  ) those of Our Messengers whom We sent before you: "Did We ever appointaliha (gods) to be worshipped besides the Most Beneficent (Allah)?"" [az-Zukhruf 43:45]

And,

"Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim (Abraham) and those with him, when they said to their people: "Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allah, we have rejected you, and there has started between us and you, hostility and hatred for ever, until you believe in Allah Alone,"" [al-Mumtahinah 60:4]

And,

"Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibrahim (Abraham) and those with him, when they said to their people: "Verily, we are free from you and whatever you worship besides Allah, we have rejected you, and there has started between us and you, hostility and hatred for ever, until you believe in Allah Alone,"" [as-Saaffaat 37:35-36]

And the Qur’aan is full of concurring evidences.

(Note:) Tawheed does not (merely) mean to believe in One Lord. If we were to affirm that Tawheed is to believe only in one Lord (Tawheed ar-Ruboobiyyah), then this would mean that He is the sole creator and nothing more. This is the very same belief held by those who are misguided, such as the philosophers and the Soofees. They believe that affirming the oneness for Allaah as being the sole Creator is sufficient for one to have Tawheed. They argue that He is the only One Who has Created everything that exists from the creation (thus this being their version of Tawheed). Undoubtedly, these groups have been misguided from understanding the true meaning of at-Tawheed, which is to single out Allaah Alone, without any partners, for all your acts of worship as He is the only One Who Deserves it.

Another reason why their understanding is false is because they have misunderstood what the word Ilaah or God means.

Al-Ilaah (trans. deity or god) is something that is worshipped because it deserves it. An Ilaah is not something that has the ability to create something. So if one believes that God is someone who creates and has no other quality in relation to Tawheed of that god, then they have not understood what at-Tawheed truly means.

Based on this definition, if one was to say Tawheed means to believe only in one god then this would make many from the Mushrikeen as being Muslims, as they too believe in one god or one creator. And this is the meaning of the statement:

"And most of them believe not in Allah except that they attribute partners unto Him [i.e. they are Mushrikun -polytheists - see Verse 6: 121]." [Yoosuf 12:106]

Some of the Salaf used to say about this, “Ask these people, who created the Heavens and the Earths? They will say Allaah. So why do you worship other than him?”
"Say: "Whose is the earth and whosoever is therein? If you know!" They will say: "It is Allah's!" Say: "Will you not then remember?" Say: "Who is (the) Lord of the seven heavens, and (the) Lord of the Great Throne?" They will say: "Allah." Say: "Will you not then fear Allah (believe in His Oneness, obey Him, believe in the Resurrection and Recompense for each and every good or bad deed)." Say "In Whose Hand is the sovereignty of everything (i.e. treasures of each and everything)? And He protects (all), while against Whom there is no protector, (i.e. if Allah saves anyone none can punish or harm him, and if Allah punishes or harms anyone none can save him), if you know." [Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 12, Page 145]. They will say: "(All that belongs) to Allah." Say: "How then are you deceived and turn away from the truth?"" [23:84-89]

So not understanding this point! At-Tawheed means more than believing in one creator and understanding this is vital, as the Mushrikeen erred in this as well. They did not understand that at-Tahweed believes in worshipping One Lord Alone, without any partners, thus not understanding what truly worship means;

"Have they taken others as intercessors besides Allah? Say: "Even if they have power over nothing whatever and have no intelligence?" Say: "To Allah belongs all intercession. His is the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth, then to Him you shall be brought back."" [az-Zumar 39:43-44]

And,

"And they worship besides Allah things that hurt them not, nor profit them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with Allah." Say: "Do you inform Allah of that which He knows not in the heavens and on the earth?" Glorified and Exalted be He above all that which they associate as partners with Him!" [Yoonus 10:18]

And,

"Say (O Muhammad  ): "Shall I take as a Wali (helper, protector, etc.) any other than Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth? And it is He Who feeds but is not fed." Say: "Verily, I am commanded to be the first of those who submit themselves to Allah (as Muslims)." And be not you (O Muhammad  ) of the Mushrikun[polytheists, pagans, idolaters and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah]." [al-An'aam 6:14]

And,

"They will abide therein (under the curse in Hell), their punishment will neither be lightened, nor will they be reprieved." [al-Baqarah 2:162]

So they would worship the sun, the moon and the stars, they would supplicate to them and rely upon them and they would fast and slaughter for their sake and would say, “This is not Shirk! Shirk is only to believe that these things that we worship had the ability to create and sustain (i.e. the universe).”

Therefore, they worshipped these things as a means to get closer to God, they did not believe that these things they worshipped could help them rather they were a vice to get closer to God. This was their definition of Tawheed and thus it was not Shirk to them. However, it is known by to every Muslim that this is Shirk.

[Fath al-Majeed Sharh Kitaab at-Tawheed (Pg. 9-10)]
