The Importance of Remaining Silent and Limiting Socialising

Umar bin Abdul-Aziz d.101 (may Allah have Mercy on him) said:

اذا رأيتم الرجل يطيل الصمت ويهرب من الناس فاقتربوا منه فإنه يلقي الحكمة

If you see a man constantly being silent and avoids socialising with the people then get close to him. Surely, this man has been given wisdom.

سب رجل الإمام وكيع رحمه الله: فلم يُجبه فقيل له : ألا ترد عليه ؟ قال : و لم تعلمنا العلم إذاً

 روضة العقلاء صـ ١٦٦

Imam Wakee bin al-Jarraah (d. 197) was once insulted. It was asked of him, “Will you not respond to him?”

He said, “We would have not learned knowledge, therefore.”
