Questions 13

Questions asked to Shaykh Saaleh ibn Ghanam as-Sadlaan [May Allaah preserve him] in his house after Salaat al-Jumu’ah

Fri 22/12/1432 - 18/11/2011

Question: Is it permissible for a menstruating woman to enter a Masid?

Answer: A menstruating woman is not allowed to enter a Masjid, unless if there is a dire need to do so. In this case she may walk through the Masjid or stand in it to fulfil her need or to talk to someone, for example, that she can’t talk to outside or whatever is like this, then in these cases this is OK. But the origin is that she doesn’t enter the Masjid until she is pure.

Question: Is cupping from the things that invalidate the fasting and how do we reconcile between the evidences that seem to contradict each other?

Answer: Yes, the correct view is that cupping breaks fasting even though there is a difference between the people of knowledge but the correct view is that it breaks the fast. There are two hadeeth that have been used, the first is that the hadeeth that states that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] was cupped whilst fasting. The other hadeeth that narrates that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] sad, “Cupping breaks the fast of the one who is cupping and the one who is cupped”. The way we reconcile is that the in the beginning it was permitted to have cupping done whilst fasting but towards the end of the life of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] it became prohibited, and this is what has remained.

Question: If a man has two wives, which one does he marry in Jannah?

Answer: The one who has the best character out of the two in the worldly life will be his wife in the hereafter.

Question: A new Muslim is asking about a loan he took from a bank before accepting Islam, this loan has interest. Does he pay the loan back without interest? Or is he allowed to pay with the interest?

Answer: If he is able to pay it without the interest and that they may pardon him from the extra amount, then this is better but if they don’t pardon him or let him off then he may pay the intial agreed amount with the added interest because it is a contract and he must complete it.

Question: What is the ruling on going honeymoons?

Answer: This is from the customs of the people that have been taken from some of the countries and some of the tribes. This is not part of the Shariah so we can do this, it is Mubah, on the condition that there is nothing Haraam involved in it.

Questioner: Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saleh ibn ‘Uthaymeen [May Allaah have mercy on him] said it is from extravagance and he prohibited it, what’s your view?

Shaykh Saleh: It’s his view but if someone is rich and he is able to take his new wife on holiday then this Mubah as long as it doesn’t involve anything Haraam.

Questioner: Does this include travelling to the lands of the non-Muslim?

Shaykh Saleh: This is a different issue. In its origin, honeymoons are OK but if one goes to the lands of the non-Muslims then this is not permissible as it involves haraam.

Question: What is the definition of Isbaal? Does it include the Thobe, Izaar [sarong worn under the Thobe], Shemaagh [male headscarf], all of it or some of it?

Answer: What has come in the Shariah is that whatever is below the ankles is Isbaal as whatever is below the ankle is in the fire. Whatever is above the ankles is permissible and Mubah.

Questioner: Connected to this, it is better to wear the under garment [Izaar] above your ankles of half way through your shin?

Shaykh Saleh: The hadeeth that is in Saheeh Muslim mentions that it is better for us to wear the Izaar halfway up on ones calf or shin. This is better and more perfect, however whatever is worn above the ankle is permissible and Mubah.

Questioner: But Oh Shaykh, if we have an option of following the hadeeth or the customs, which do we take? As the customs in Saudi is not to wear our garments half way up the shin/calf, so which do we follow?

Answer:  No, we must act upon the customs of the people that don’t go against the commands and prohibitions in Shariah, for example the customs of the people is to where clothes above their ankles and this is well known, so we act upon this. Had it been well known for the people to wear their clothes up to their ankles then we would act upon this. The people here wear their clothes up to their but above their ankles, so we wear our clothes like this.

Question: Is it permissible for Ahdkaar to be recited in a nice voice like we do when reciting the Quraan?

Answer: No, this isn’t from the Sunnah and it’s not from the acts of the People of the Sunnah, rather this is from the innovations of the Soofees. What we must do is to remember Allaah without the principle of Tajweed nor beautifying the voice like we do when reciting the Quraan, as these are specific for the Quraan.

Question: How do we renew our intentions when starting a new act of worship?

Answer: This is done in the heart every time when one wants to do a new deed. So for example if the time for Asr comes, then he has the intention to pray in his heart when he is about to go and pray. This is done without uttering an intention, the intention is in the heart.

Question: How do we purify our hearts and intentions so that we have Ikhlaas with Allaah?

Answer: One of the ways of purifying your heart and intentions is by remembering the favours of Allaah upon you in every situation, so this will drive you to do good deeds in obedience to Him and stay away from bad deeds that are in disobedience to Him. So when he does this, he will realise the favours of Allaah upon on him and he will thank and praise Allaah.

Question: What is the definition of being wasteful? For example if a rich man buys a rich house, is this being wasteful?

Answer: Being wasteful is to spend more than you can afford or violating the rights of himself or others. For example a man calls people to his house to eat and they eat it all and they don’t throw any of it away. So for example a man prepares food for 40 people and he invites 20 people to eat and the rest of the food is not thrown away then this is not wasting. However if one buys food for 20 people but only 5 people eat and the rest is thrown away, then this is being wasteful.
