Question and Answer session with Shaykh Saleh ibn Muhammad al-Luhaydaan [May Allaah preserve him]
Sharh Kitaab at-Tawheed, Chapter 7 in the Shaykh’s Masjid, Ar-Riyadh
Question: Is it permissible to disobey your parents if they tell you not to seek knowledge from a particular person
Answer: Obeying the parents is Waajib unless they tell you do an act of disobedience to Allaah or they tell you to leave off an act of worship which is Waajib upon you. In this situation we need to analyse, why are they preventing you from seeking knowledge from this person? If the person they are preventing you to seek knowledge from is a person who has forms of innovation, then we must obey our parents and abandon this person. However if this person is a person of the Sunnah then we must disobey our parents in this regard.
Question: Is it permissible to pray behind one who does Ta’weel of the Names and Attributes of Allaah, follows the Deobandi sect and takes knowledge from scholars from that sect?
Answer: No this is not permissible; this is because their Aqeedah has aspects of Shirk and being with them leads to these aspects of Shirk, such as Wahdah al-Wujood.
Question: Can we work alongside those who disrespect the scholars for the purpose of Da’wah?
Answer: If the person disrespects the scholars but doesn’t show it by belittling them then this is OK. But if he openly disrespects them and belittles them then we shouldn’t work with such people.
Question: Is it permissible for the woman to show the shape of her head or does she need to wear one garment that covers the shape of her whole body starting from her head?
Answer: As long as her hair is covered and her head is covered properly then this is OK but it would be better for her to cover the shape of her whole body is possible.
Question: Is it permissible to make your voice melodic when calling the Athaan, Iqaama for the Salaah and the Takbeeraat in the Salah?
Answer: It is permissible to do this but he shouldn’t elongate it, because each of the letters needs to be pronounced properly without exceeding the limit according to the rules of pronunciation and by elongating it, it distracts the people as they become more concern with the beauty of the voice as opposed to the remembrance of Allaah.
Question: If a person has psychological or mental problems and suffers from whispering from Shaytaan, are they excused from praying Salaah?
Answer: If the person is sane and knows what they are doing and has control of their own actions then they are accountable and have no excuse. But if they don’t have control of their own actions and they lose their sanity then they are like those people who are insane, thus being excused.
Question: What is the woman allowed to show in front of her children and at what age does the situation change?
Answer: The age of where children are able to distinguish begins at the age of seven, before this age she may show anything outside of her ‘Awrah, which is from the navel to the knee. By the age of ten the child is able to distinguish the differences in the genders, so at this age she must cover what is normal to the customs of her people such as her arms, calves, elbows, neck etc. Once the child has begun puberty then the mother should cover her whole body but may show her face and hair.
The signs of puberty can be one of three; either he begins to have wet dreams, growth of pubic hairs or he reaches the age of fifteen years old.
Question: I am a person who has experienced racism in Saudi Arabia, my children get racist insults at school so what is your advice to me? How do I explain the concept of racism to my children? Is it permissible for me to go back to my country in the west because my family can’t live under these conditions?
Answer: I am not sure what type of racism you are talking about. Racism is of types, it can be when one person likes another based on their lineage or cultural background and they dislike others who are not from the same background, such as some Arabs who love Arabs. This is incorrect, in Islam we have brotherhood which is based on our religion to the extent that we have been described as one body, not being split.
But if you are talking about racism due to you following a particular Madhab then this also is impermissible. It is Wajib for the person to protect himself and his family and to stay away from anywhere that opposes Tawheed.
Question: A man divorced his wife whilst she was pregnant. She then gave birth and he then took her back during her post-natal bleeding period and then divorced her again. He then took her back and divorced her again, can he remain with this woman or are they irrevocably divorced?
Answer: This person has divorced his wife three times so no, he can’t take her back. He has divorced in three separate sittings and according to the correct view of the scholars, pronouncing divorce during a woman’s post-natal period is counted as a valid divorce, because of these factors he has divorced his wife and he cannot take her back.
