The People of Jaahiliyyah would be split into different parties but Islam promotes unity

Shaykh Saleh aal ash-Shaykh

Taken from Masaa’il Jaahiliyyah

The Mushriks of Jihiliyyah were split into various groups and parties, as well as practising various different religions. They perceived that splitting and not being subservient to others was a sign of honour and dignity, so they were proud in the fact that they were disunited. They all had their own methodologies and religions, some of them worshipped Angels, other worshipping pious dead people others didn’t do the above, rather they disbelieved in any form of resurrection. Other religions worshipped Esaa ibn Maryam and Uzair, believing them to be sons of God. Therefore Islam came and commanded us to be united upon the truth;

“He (Allah) has ordained for you the same religion (Islamic Monotheism) which He ordained for Nuh (Noah), and that which We have revealed to you (O Muhammad), and that which We ordained for Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses) and 'Îsa (Jesus) saying you should establish religion (i.e. to do what it orders you to do practically), and make no divisions in it (religion) (i.e. various sects in religion).” [42:13]

Shaykh al-Islaam Muhammad ibn Abd Al-Wahaab said in explaining this Aayah that “This Aayah give us a great principle, that is for us to be united and that unity was the call of the Prophets before us. The religion of all the Prophets is the same, they share the same beliefs and faith, so we need to be united on the true religion as the Prophets were and not to be disunited into groups and fractions.” The unity that we are referring to is to be united upon Tawheed and for this Ummah more specifically, to be united on the call that the Prophet Muhammad [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] came with.

One of the major forms of maintaining unity is detach ourselves from any form of Shirk or its people, this is because the core foundations of our religion is to uphold Tawheed. If the people were to differ in the matter of Tawheed and the core foundations of our religion, then undoubtedly division and disunity will appear, even from within the Ummah. If we look at the people of Shirk, they are all divided in their religion and this even extends to the disunity they have in their worldly affairs, this is because the core foundations of religion is based on Shirk, which creates disharmony in their religious and worldly affairs. Likewise, disunity in our worldly lives is also a cause of disunity in our religious lives and affairs.

For these reasons, Allaah has ordered us to be united and prohibited us from being disunited. Being united in our religious affairs is of two types; to be united in our religion and to be physically united for the sake of religion, both being as important as the other. The people of knowledge have explained that the command for being united in our religious affairs as well as our worldly affairs is based on the statement of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him], “Being united is a mercy but disunity is a punishment.” And there are other narrations which are similar. The Prophet constantly commanded us to be different from the people of Jahiliyyah and on this occasion he [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] on this occasion was given one religion for us to be united upon. Likewise he [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] commanded us to obey the rulers and those in authority over us in order to uphold unity in our worldly affairs.

Allaah says, “And be not as those who divided and differed among themselves after the clear proofs had come to them. It is they for whom there is an awful torment.” [3:105] This ayah was revealed and addressing the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] and his companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them all] ordering them to be different to the Jews and Christians that came before them, they differed to more than seventy-odd sects. The Jews split into seventy-one sects and the Christians split into seventy-two sects. For this reason Allaah commanded us to be united and to avoid any form of disunity, being united on Tawheed and holding fast to the Path of Allaah, not introducing a new religion, innovations or methodologies but to practice that which was revealed to his Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him].

Allaah says in another ayah, “And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allah (i.e. this Qur'an), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allah's Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together.” [3:103] This ayah encourages the Muslims to be united in our worldly affairs. Prior to Islam the people were disunited, each having different groups and leaders, so disunity in our worldly affairs creates disunity in our religious affairs. Sometimes disunity can start of as something minor and it increases and grows bigger until it becomes a wider problem. For example disagreement between individuals can easily grow and become a bigger problem, creating various groups and parties. So Allaah tells us to ‘and be not divided among yourselves’ so we shouldn’t be disunited on a smaller scale which will mean major disunity will not occur. So this ayah shows we should be united without our smaller communities and as a larger community, obeying those in authority over us.

These two are two major principles which are needed to support each other. The people of Jahiliyyah did not obey their rulers or those in authority which was a cause for various groups to exist, so these two are needed to support each other, obeying the rulers and being united in our religion. This is what the Shariah of Islam commands us all to sustain.

Muslims need to be united and not be split into various parties, in fact this is the way of the non-believers, “Of those who split up their religion (i.e. who left the true Islamic Monotheism), and became sects, [i.e. they invented new things in the religion (Bid'ah ), and followed their vain desires], each sect rejoicing in that which is with it” [30:32]

Unfortunately today we have witnessed the Muslims become split because they have neglected these principles. Disagreement in our religions and disunity have become widespread and have introduced various different innovations, to the extent that we have been prophesied to be split into seventy-three different groups and sects, all of which will be in Hellfire except one. And when the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] was asked ‘Who are that group that will be saved from the Hellfire?’ He [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] replied that ‘it will be the Jamaa’ah’ meaning those who are united upon authentic Islam.

Explanation of the Hadeeth: “Whoever testifies ‘There is no God but Allaah will enter Jannah’”

By Shaykh Abd al-Azeez ibn Baaz [May Allaah have Mercy on him]

www.binbaz.org.sa/mat/3331

It has been narrated in many ahaadeeth that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon him] said, “Whoever attests to ‘There is no God but Allaah’, truly believing in it, will enter Jannah[1]” with similar meaning. It was also narrated that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon him] said in similar meaning, "I have been ordered to fight against people until they testify that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah and until they perform the prayers and pay the zakat, and if they do so they will have gained protection from me for their lives and property, unless [they do acts that are punishable] in accordance with Islam, and their reckoning will be with Allah the Almighty." And the ahaadeeth that have these meanings explained each other, all of them explaining that whoever attests to ‘There is no God but Allaah’ being truthful to it, being sincere with it, fulfilling the rights of Allaah that He has upon us, performing what Allaah has ordered to perform, staying away from what He has ordered to stay away from…whoever dies upon the above will enter Paradise.
So it is incumbent on all the Muslims that they should Fear Allaah and to be sincere to Him. The Muslims also need to truly believe in His Messenger Muhammad [Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon him], that he is the Final Prophet sent to whole of mankind and jinn and that there will be no Prophet after him. Along with this, the Muslims need to fulfil the obligations upon us, leave what is prohibited for us, to enjoining and help each in doing deeds of piety and to encourage each other to adhere to the truth and to be patient upon it. The Muslims also need to reject any form of Shirk and the religions of the people of Shirk, whoever dies doing the above will enter Paradise without reckoning or punishment.
From the virtues and benefit of having Tawheed and having Eemaan in Allaah and the Prophet Muhammad [Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon him] and abandoning all forms of Shirk, is that if one commits sins, even if they are major sins like fornication or drinking alcohol, then because of his belief in Tawheed and having Eeman he will be saved from being punished in Hellfire for eternity. However commits sins like these will be under the Will of Allaah on the Day of Judgement, if He wants He might punish or forgive, so due to the virtue of Tawheed and Eeman is that one may will be forgiven his sins, even if it is after some form of punishment.
“”Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him (in worship), but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills; and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin.” [4:48]
In this Ayaah Allaah informs us that He will never forgive the person who dies doing Shirk, but if someone dies with Tawheed and any other sin then He will forgive it. He may forgive the person who has Tawheed from the sins he has committed. Furthermore, the person of Tawheed may also be entitled to the intercession of the Angels, Messengers, Prophets and the pious slaves of Allaah.
“And there are many angels in the heavens, whose intercession will avail nothing except after Allah has given leave for whom He wills and is pleased with.” [53:26]
So whoever dies doing Shirk will not be forgiven but as any other types of sin then Allaah will forgive it.
The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon him] also informed us that he will intercede on behalf those who committed sins from this Ummah, even if some of them were being punished in the Hellfire, the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon him] will continue to intercede for them on numerous occasions. Those who had Tawheed will benefit from this intercession and they will be taken out from the Hellfire, by the Mercy of Allaah. So the Hellfire will be only full of disbelievers, they will stay there for eternity.

“They will long to get out of the Fire, but never will they get out therefrom; and theirs will be a lasting torment.” [5:37]
There are many Ayaat that share a similar meaning. What we have said above is the view of Ahl al-Sunnah which has been narrated from the Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them all]. May Allaah make us all of them.
And Allaah is the Source of all strength.

'Explanation by Shaykh Saleh aal ash-Shaykh of the Hadeeth ‘Verily Allaah wants for you three things….'

Taken from the Sharh Mas’aail Jaahiliyyah

It was narrated in the Two Saheehs that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said;

“Verily Allaah wants for you three things; To worship Him Alone and not to do ascribe partners to him, To be united together on the Path of Allaah and not to be disunited, To be sincere to the rulers that are over you.”

Explanation:

Shortcomings in the religion of the people are rooted from these three problems. Similarly these characteristics where found in those people who disbelieved in the day of Jaahiliyyah, so before the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] there was a huge spread of chaos. They population were not united under one ruler and they didn’t wish to be united. They failed in this because they held the notion that obedience to another human was degrading and didn’t make sense. How can they obey someone who was like them? How can they obey someone who they thought they were better than? So disobedience was seen as a character of having honour and pride.

The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] came and disagreed with them. He [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] came with a religion that enjoined obedience to the ruler in good and not to disobey or rebel against them or not to be a cause of disunity within the general population.

The first to go against the command of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] were the Kharaarij. They were stubborn and didn’t recognise the rule of ‘Alee ibn Abee Taalib [May Allaah be Pleased with him] and they fought him.

However the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] commanded and ordered us to be obedient to them. He [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Listen and obey the ruler even if he takes your wealth and beats you on your back.” He [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] was asked in another narration, “Shall we not fight them?....” He [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] replied “No, as long as they pray.” In another narration the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] replied to the question, “Unless you see from them a clear act of Kufr so that you can use it as a proof in front of Allaah.”

So the rulers are Muslim and they are ruling by Islam unless we see some act of Kufr from them or an act of apostasy. If this is the case, then we must obey them and the Muslim population must be united under them as long as the ruler is still a Muslim. Even if the ruler commits sins the Muslims must remain united under him because weakness is not a cause for us to become disunited.

If we were to look at the history of Islam and the Muslims we will see that this principle has gradually been forgotten and over looked. The Muslims throughout the ages have gone against their ruler, thinking that a greater good will come out of, however their act of rebelling against the ruler brings about no good at all. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] told us, “There will not come a generation of people except that the next generation after them will have more evil in it, until the Day of Judgement.”
This was the way of the people of Jaahiliyyah before us so the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] came and ordered for us to be different from them.

This is because pride and disobedience was rife amongst the various leaders that existed within the Arabian Gulf, so they differed, were disunited and a result there were a countless number of wars between them.

Therefore the principle of obeying the ruler is a great principle and for this reason we can see careful wording from the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him]. He [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] ordered us to “Listen and obey the ruler even if he takes your wealth and beats you on your back”, why did he order us to ‘listen’ and ‘obey’? This is because taking wealth and beating is a trial which one can be recompensed for on by Allaah, however obedience keeps the country in order. One single act of disunited could create chaos and the whole population to rebel.

If we look at the time whilst ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan [May Allaah be Pleased with him] was ruler, we can clearly see how Islam spread from the east to the west, all under one ruler. The Muslim empire was united and they all obeyed one ruler.

This hadeeth sets a great principle for Muslims to follow and stick to. The Muslims need to have Tawheed, by doing so they will repel shirk. The Muslims need to be united and by doing so they will protect their religion. If they obey the ruler and those in authority over them, give them god advice and not to rebel against them, then they will maintain the harmony in the land. These three principles are paramount for us to realise and act upon.

The People of Jahiliyyah and Shirk

Shaykh Saleh aal ash-Shaykh
Taken from the Sharh Mas’aail Jaahiliyyah

The people in the days of Jaahiliyya used to worship other than Allaah. They were upon Shirk by worshipping pious men that had passed away. They would supplicate to them and would ask them to intercede for them so that they may be forgiven, all the while thinking that these pious men were close to Allaah and that He would accept it from them.

This was the theory they had, however they would at times also worship Allaah. But when they were faced with adversity, instead of worshipping Allaah they would turn away and ask Prophets that had passed away before, of pious men or even angels to help them or intercede on their behalf.

“Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third?” [53:19-20] This is a refutation on their idea of worshipping pious people who had passed away, idols were made in honour of them.

“And (remember) when Allah will say (on the Day of Resurrection): "O 'Îsa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary)! Did you say unto men: 'Worship me and my mother as two gods besides Allah?' "” [5:116] This ayah shows us that Prophets were worshipped.

“And (remember) the Day when He will gather them all together, then He will say to the angels: "Was it you that these people used to worship?"” [40:34]

And there are many other examples in the Quraan. The idea of worshipping other than Allaah was an area that many people were uncertain about and were filled with doubts in. Unfortunately, if we look at the state of the Muslims today we can see that have inherited the same doubts and uncertainty. We find people today who worship pious people, they ask them for assistance, they even sacrifice to them, swear oaths using their names as well as other acts. These are all acts of Shirk which Allaah has clearly clarified the ruling of.

So we can ask a question, did the people of Jahiliyyah do these acts of ignorance or did they know that these acts were wrong? The answer is that they knew these acts were wrong yet they persisted in it. In fact they strove and fought against the truth and persisted on Shirk, “Then when their Messengers came to them with clear proofs, they were glad (and proud) with that which they had of the knowledge (of worldly things). And that at which they used to mock, surrounded them (i.e. the punishment).” [40:83]

So the people in the day of Jahilliyyah opposed the Prophets knowingly. However the knowledge they had didn’t bring them any benefit. They would even do acts of worship such as Hajj saying they are worshipping Allaah but their cause of Shirk was to supplicate and ask from other than Allaah, “And those who take Auliya' (protectors, helpers, lords, gods) besides Him (say): "We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah.” [39:3] They would ask pious people and Prophets that had passed away, but they thought that this deed would bring them closer to Allaah, so even in their act of Shirk they were trying to worship Allaah.
Just like the people today, they would worship other than Allaah thinking that they people they are asking will help them. They took them as an intermediary because these intermediaries were presumed to have a higher status with Allaah.

So this is an extremely important lesson we need to learn and pay attention to and we need to realise that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] came to differ from the people in Jahilliyyah in this regard. Allaah has ordered for us to be sincere to Him and to worship Him alone, “Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "Allah Alone I worship by doing religious deeds sincerely for His sake only (and not to show off, and not to set up rivals with Him in worship.)" [39:14] and there are many Ayaat with this meaning, we need to be sincere to Allaah and disavow any form of Shirk, and to direct ourselves to Allaah Alone.

What is the meaning of Shirk? Shaykh Saleh aal ash-Shaykh

Taken from the Sharh Mas’aail Jaahiliyyah

What is the meaning of Shirk? Shirk is to make Allaah equal to something else in worship. So however makes Allaah equal to something else or entirely directs their worship to something other than Allaah has committed Shirk. The person who does Shirk and dies upon this will be forbidden from entering Paradise and will be punished in Hellfire for eternity.

Allaah tells us about the people of Shirk when they will see their punishment, “By Allah, we were truly in a manifest error, When We held you (false gods) as equals (in worship) with the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists)” [26:97-8]

So they will admit that they were wrong by making Allaah equal to other false gods. So worshipping other than Allaah is Shirk, including loving other than Allaah or any other act of worship that should only be directed to Allaah alone. About this Allaah says, “"Has he made the alihah (gods) (all) into One Ilah (God - Allah). Verily, this is a curious thing!” [38:5]. The Mushrikeen were confused on how all these various acts of worship can be directed to one god alone.

Unfortunately we see this attitude in the Ummah today. This is because many Muslims, for example in the books of Ashari’s like as-Sanwasee, think that the meaning of Tawheed is that ‘There is no Lord but Allaah’ but this is clearly wrong. They don’t realise that Tawheed includes making Allaah Alone in our acts of worship as well as in Lordship. In fact this false meaning of Tawheed is what the Mushrikeen used to believe as well. They believed that there is only one Lord but what made them Mushriks and non-believers is because they did Shirk in worshipping other than Allaah, “And if you ask them who created them, they will surely say: "Allah." How then are they turned away (from the worship of Allah, Who created them)?” [43:87].

We see some Muslims have followed the Mushrikeen step by step. They failed to understand the meaning of Tawheed. Some even believe that the souls of the deceased are able to ask Allaah on their behalf so they supplicate to souls and not Allaah, thinking that this act isn’t Shirk. This is undoubtedly a cause of great misfortune to befall the Ummah today. We have taken away things that belong only to Allaah and have redirected them to other than Him.

Shaykh al-Islaam Abd al-Wahaab discusses this in his treatise ‘Qawaaid al-Arba’ and highlights a very important point. He argues that the Mushrikeen in the time of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] were better than the people who do Shirk today. The reason for this is because that they did Shirk at times of ease but in times of difficulty they would worship Allaah Alone. However today we see people doing Shirk in time of ease as well as hardship, “And when they embark on a ship, they invoke Allah, making their Faith pure for Him only: but when He brings them safely to land, behold, they give a share of their worship to others” [29:65].

So Allaah has ordered the Muslims to be sincere and worship Him alone and to complete avoid Shirk in all its forms. In fact, He has warned us from Shirk as it leads to one being punished in Hellfire for eternity.

“Verily, whosoever sets up partners (in worship) with Allah, then Allah has forbidden Paradise to him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) there are no helpers” [5:72]

Therefore this is a very important matter and it is from the inheritance of the call that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] came to call to. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] came to call to Tawheed and this was the call of all the Prophets [Peace be upon them all] that he [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] inherited from them. So it is unsurprising that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] prohibited us from Shirk and to complete our Tawheed and understanding of ‘There is no God but Allaah’, to make Allaah one and to affirm for Him what He affirmed for Himself and to deny anything that He denied for Himself, because this is the difference between Heaven and Hell.

The importance has been clarified and made clear, therefore it is essential for us to understand this and to make it the first point of call to non-Muslims. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] clarified this point to Mua’aadh [May Allaah be Pleased with him] by commanding him make it the first thing he calls to, “You are going to the People of the Book so make the first thing you call them to is to make Allaah one.” Therefore Tahweed is the central point of our belief and our religion as a whole and it is the first thing we call to, to Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

Therefore focusing on Tawheed in ourselves and making it the first thing we call to is extremely important, as it is a way we can save ourselves and others from the Hellfire.

Loving and Hating for the Sake of Allaah

الولاء والبراء
Explained by Shaykh Saleh ibn Fawzaan al-Fawzaan
[May Allaah preserve him]

At Jaami Ameer Sultan ibn Fahad ibn Abd Al-Azeez
Qurtuba, Riyadh
Fri 9/11/1432 - 7/10/2011

All Praise belongs to the Lord of all that exists and May Allaah send His Peace and Blessings on our Prophet Muhammad, on his family, his companions and all those that follow him until the Last Day.
To Proceed:
Allaah, The Exalted and Glorified, from His infinite Wisdom has made his servants of types, He has made some believers, some non-believers and some hypocrites. He has made people in levels, some are sinners; some are oppressors, so not all people are not on one level.
He, The Most High and Exalted, says;
“He it is Who created you, then some of you are disbelievers and some of you are believers. And Allah is All-Seer of what you do.”
[Taghaabun 64:2]
He, The Most High and Exalted, sent to us prophets and revealed to us books to explain to us the path of goodness and falsehood, the paths of guidance and misguidance. He, The Most High and Exalted, sent to us a warner and a bringer of glad tidings, he sent with him clear guidance so that we have proof and didn’t leave us ignorant without having any evidence. He, The Most High and Exalted, has made it easy for us to follow if you want to follow and has made it easy for you to be misguided if you don’t want to be guided.
He, The Most High and Exalted, says:
As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, And believes in Al-Husna. We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); We will make smooth for him the path for evil;”
[Al-Layl 92: 5-10]
So the cause for guidance is from the slave and then Allaah makes it easy for you so in this Ayaah it says that whoever is obedient and does what he is commanded and he believes, then Allaah will make it easy for him to be obedient and follow His commands and increase him in guidance. However the one who rejects and doesn’t do good deeds and disobeys Allaah, then this isn’t from Allaah. Rather Allaah has Decreed and has made the path to Jannah for the good-doers easy, and the path to Hell for the evil-doers easy.
More precisely, He, The Most High and Exalted, has given people free will and desires, but those who wish for Allaah he will obey and he will follow the Sunnah, as the cause for misguidance is found in those who turn away from the Sunnah. Whoever wants to be deviated then Allaah will allow him to and He doesn’t Oppress anyone.
“But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); We will make smooth for him the path for evil…”
[Al-Layl 92: 5-10]
So Allaah has made us of types and levels and he has made commandments so that he can differentiate between the believers and non-believers. He has set out commandments in their Aqeedah [Beliefs], their religion etc. until their wealth and those who they associate with. Therefore, one of His Commands is that we make Hijrah, which is to leave the land of the Kuffar and join and live in the land of the Muslims. It is narrated in the Sunnah that we are not allowed to live and stay with the Mushrikeen and be associated with them. This is because by doing Hijrah the Muslim is able to uphold his religion in the truest form and he won’t need to compromise. So the point of Hijrah is so that we move away from the Kuffar in our heart and our actions so that we may become better. Some people they move to Muslim lands but they haven’t done Hijrah in their hearts, so it is important that we do Hijrah in our hearts and actions so that we are not like the Kuffar and so that we are free from them. So this is one example of Allaah giving us a commandment so that we be different from them.
Likewise, Allaah has commanded us from not imitating the Kuffar, not to be like them in speech and actions. So this means we are not allowed to praise them and to mix with them because Allaah told us to be different from them, so that they have no influence over us in our religion. As for working with them and doing business with them then this is permissible and this is to be done in the best way with good manners from our part, this is because this is a worldly objective. This has nothing to do with befriending them and making our lives in this world easy. As for the Kuffar who hate Islam and the Muslims and they try to make life difficult for you then we are not allowed to be with them and befriend them but those who have no objective against Muslims then we behave with them in good manner.
“Allah does not forbid you to deal justly and kindly with those who fought not against you on account of religion and did not drive you out of your homes. Verily, Allah loves those who deal with equity. It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them. And whosoever will befriend them, then such are the Zalimun (wrong-doers those who disobey Allah).”
[Mumtahinah 60:8-9]
In another ayah:
“O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians as Auliya' (friends, protectors, helpers, etc.), they are but Auliya' to one another. And if any amongst you takes them as Auliya', then surely he is one of them. Verily, Allah guides not those people who are the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers and unjust).”
[Al-Maaidah 5:51]
The meaning of Baraa’ in the Arabic language is to leave something or to abandon something. In the Shariah it means to leave something for the sake of your religion, leaving doing particular actions and it can also mean leaving something in your heart, such as leaving loving the Kuffar.
“O you who believe! Take not My enemies and your enemies (i.e. disbelievers and polytheists, etc.) as friends, showing affection towards them, while they have disbelieved in what has come to you of the truth (i.e. Islamic Monotheism, this Qur'an, and Muhammad ), and have driven out the Messenger and yourselves (from your homeland) because you believe in Allah your Lord! If you have come forth to strive in My Cause and to seek My Good Pleasure, (then take not these disbelievers and polytheists, etc., as your friends). You show friendship to them in secret, while I am All-Aware of what you conceal and what you reveal. And whosoever of you (Muslims) does that, then indeed he has gone (far) astray, (away) from the Straight Path.”
[Mumtahina 60:1]
This ayaah is giving us the command not to love the Kaafir in your heart, because Allaah doesn’t love this person so we are commanded not to love them and to be opposite from them.
As for leaving off doing particular actions, then these actions consist of us supporting them and aiding them in their religion. This includes our actions and speech, so we don’t argue for them and we don’t fight for and with them. This is a type of allying and love. So loving in the heart, helping in actions and speech, praising them etc. are all types of allying with them which he have been prohibited from.
You (O Muhammad ) will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad ), even though they were their fathers, or their sons, or their brothers, or their kindred (people). For such He has written Faith in their hearts, and strengthened them with Ruh (proofs, light and true guidance) from Himself. And We will admit them to Gardens (Paradise) under which rivers flow, to dwell therein (forever). Allah is pleased with them, and they with Him. They are the Party of Allah. Verily, it is the Party of Allah that will be the successful.
[Mujaadilah 58:22]
When Ibraaheem [Peace be upon him] realised that his father is rejecting him and what he was calling to, Ibraaheem stopped seeking forgiveness for him.
“And [Ibrahim's (Abraham)] invoking (of Allah) for his father's forgiveness was only because of a promise he [Ibrahim (Abraham)] had made to him (his father). But when it became clear to him [Ibrahim (Abraham)] that he (his father) is an enemy to Allah, he dissociated himself from him. Verily Ibrahim (Abraham) was Al-Awwah (has fifteen different meanings but the correct one seems to be that he used to invoke Allah with humility, glorify Him and remember Him much), and was forbearing. (Tafsir Al-Qurtubi).”
[Tawbah 9:114]
“You (O Muhammad ) will not find any people who believe in Allah and the Last Day, making friendship with those who oppose Allah and His….”
 [Mujaadilah 58:22]
This ayaah shows that part of Emaan is to leave of having allies with the Kuffar, so if one believes in Allah and the Last Day, he will leave off having this sense of allying with them. This is because the Kuffaar in one direction and the Messenger is in another direction. Even if ones family member opposes the call of Islam and The Messenger then this doesn’t change anything, we are still not allowed to ally with them.
This is Eeman. We are Muslims. Some people believe that the human race is one brotherhood and we should all love each other, but we are proud to be Muslims. We don’t need to call for one human race; we call for oneness and unity upon Eeman. However this doesn’t mean we hate them and are at loggerheads with them and to treat them unjustly, no this is wrong:
“O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah and be just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety, and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do.”
[Maaidah 5:8]
So being unjust and oppressing them is not permissible. Rather it is prohibited that we love them and want to be like them.
This issue of allying with them is a very important topic and it is connected to our beliefs in Islam and our beliefs in oneness of Allaah. Those who have Emaan and believe in Islam are allies of each other and those who reject Islam are allies with their partners.
“The hypocrites, men and women, are from one another, they enjoin (on the people) Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief and polytheism of all kinds and all that Islam has forbidden), and forbid (people) from Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and they close their hands [from giving (spending in Allah's Cause) alms, etc.]. They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).”
[Tawbah 9:67]
And then He, The Exalted and Glorified, says about the believers;
“The believers, men and women, are Auliya' (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another, they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden); they perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give the Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will have His Mercy on them. Surely Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.”
[Tawbah 9:71]
This means that if we don’t ally with the right people and we have no allegiance with the Muslims, then there will be Fitnah and corruption in the land. This is because the Aqeedah will get mixed and the Muslims will be affected by the Kufr that the Kuffaar have in their Aqeedah. As you know, people love and imitate and want to be like the Kuffar, recently has caused great corruption in the Muslim lands. Therefore, without loving and disregarding for the sake of Allaah [Al-Walaa wal Baraa’], the lands will be full of Fitnah. This includes Fitnah in our deen, in our Aqeedah, in Emaan, to the extent that we won’t know who is a Muslim and who are Kuffaar. Therefore allegiance on the basis of deen means that there will be no Fitnah and no mixing, the Muslims allying with their brothers and Kuffaar allying with their allies.
It is strange today that we see many people loving the Kuffar and imitating them but the Kuffaar will never imitate and love the Muslims. You love them but they don’t love you.
“Lo! You are the ones who love them but they love you not, and you believe in all the Scriptures [i.e. you believe in the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel), while they disbelieve in your Book, the Qur'an]. And when they meet you, they say, "We believe". But when they are alone, they bite the tips of their fingers at you in rage. Say: "Perish in your rage. Certainly, Allah knows what is in the breasts (all the secrets)."”
[Aal Imraan 3:119]
We are allowed to benefit from them, we are allowed to work with them, we are allowed to treat them nicely but in regards to matters of the religion, we say to you your way and to us ours.
Say (O Muhammad ( ) to these Mushrikun and Kafirun): "O Al-Kafirun (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, in His Angels, in His Books, in His Messengers, in the Day of Resurrection, and in Al-Qadar, etc.)! "I worship not that which you worship, "Nor will you worship that which I worship. "And I shall not worship that which you are worshipping. "Nor will you worship that which I worship. To you be your religion, and to me my religion (Islamic Monotheism)."”
[Surah Kaafiroon 109: 1-6]
Look at the repetition in this Surah, to enforce the message. We have our way and they have ours. In matters of the Dunya it is permissible to work with them but in matters of religion and our Aqeedah and Emaan then we are completely free from them.
Some people say there is nothing like Waraa and Baraa in our religion. They say this to be soft with the Kuffaar, to love them and to imitate them.
It is narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said “Whoever loves for the sake of Allah, and hates for the sake of Allah, and whoever seals a friendship for His sake, or declares an enmity for His sake, will receive, because of this, the protection of Allah. No one may taste true faith except by this, even if his prayers and fasts are many. People have come to build their relationships around the concerns of the world, but it will not benefit them in any way.” [Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali, Jaami’ al-Ulum wal Hikam, p.30]
So we love and hate for the sake of the religion and for the sake of Allaah, in order to make Him happy and to love what He loves and to hate what He hates and to ally with whom He is allied with and to be enemies with who He is enemies with, this is all in order for us to try and gain the pleasure of Allaah.
Therefore your love and your religion is not up to you, you are not free to decide and choose who you love and which religion you follow. You have free will and choices but when it comes to your religion there is no choice, there is no choice in which Aqeedah you follow, you have no choice in whether you have Tawheed or not, this is a command from Allaah and you must follow it.
This is the meaning of Walaa and Baraa and it is important for us to know so that we uphold our religion and so we know how to deal with the Kuffar. It is important so we are able to distinguish ourselves from the Kuffar and we are not influenced by them. Allaah differentiates from the Muslims and the Kuffaar always, in rulings of the religion, in our status in the worldly life, our time in the grave and in the Hereafter, so we must have this distinction between us and the Kuffaar, and this is one of the purposes of loving and disregarding for the sake of Allaah. Don’t you see that we are not allowed to bury kuffar with Muslims? Our lives in the grave are different as well; they are punished whereas the Muslims are. And in the Hereafter the Muslims will have Jannah for eternity and the Kuffaar in Hell for eternity. These are examples of differences in Fiqh, our lives in the Barzakh and the Aakhira.
So it is incumbent for us to be proud and uphold our religion and let the religion give us honour. We should strive for our religion and to be against those who worship the Shaytaan. Therefore Jihaad and its types is a mercy for mankind as it helps spread the truth and the worship of Allah and if we leave it, all of them will remain Kuffaar and be everlasting in the Fire.
So it is strange how people have become lax in this, rather we should call to be strict on this issue. We should help and support each other and we need to know the levels and types of people and not to disregard Walaa and Baraa as some have done as it is an important aspect of our religion. Some have even gone to the extent of changing the meaning of the ayaat that talk about this and even worse some have helped the Kuffaar to change words in the Quraan, in order to eradicate this concept of Walaa and Baraa. This is a trick that they try to play but Allaah has promised that He will protect this Book but the Kuffaar would love to be able to change our religion completely.
Some people pray and they fast but they don’t know the concept of Walaa and Baraa. They are pleased with the Kufr that they have, even though this man prays and fasts! They don’t realise the difference between Emaan and Kufr and they praise the Kuffaar and they even support the Kuffaar in matters of their religion, doing Kufr and he don’t even realise it!
Some try to make arguments and legitimise their love for the Kuffaar. They try and say that they are scared of the Kuffar and that we are weak. This is not acceptable and this leads to having bad thoughts about Allaah, The Exalted and High.
“And you see those in whose hearts there is a disease (of hypocrisy), they hurry to their friendship, saying: "We fear lest some misfortune of a disaster may befall us." Perhaps Allah may bring a victory or a decision according to His Will. Then they will become regretful for what they have been keeping as a secret in themselves”
[Maaidah 5:52]
So I ask Allaah to give us an opening and a cure from these trials.
Allaah, The Exalted and High says after quoting these peoples false arguments;
“And those who believe will say: "Are these the men (hypocrites) who swore their strongest oaths by Allah that they were with you (Muslims)?" All that they did has been in vain (because of their hypocrisy), and they have become the losers. O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion (Islam), Allah will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers, fighting in the Way of Allah, and never afraid of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allah which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allah is All-Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All-Knower. Verily, your Wali (Protector or Helper) is Allah, His Messenger, and the believers, - those who perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat, and they bow down (submit themselves with obedience to Allah in prayer). And whosoever takes Allah, His Messenger, and those who have believed, as Protectors, then the party of Allah will be the victorious.”
[Maaidah 5:53-56]
So it is upon us to rectify ourselves and Allaah will always support those who uphold the truth and strive in his cause and He will make them successful, despite there are those who try to call for us ally with the Kuffar and they say they are scared of them.
These are ayaat from the Quraan but have we fulfilled these characteristics and commandments? I hope that we have but in reality it’s clear that most of us haven’t. This occurs either because they are ignorant or they are scared of the Kuffar because they don’t want to accept this and want our Aqeedah to be changed and to make us leave our religion.
“And they will never cease fighting you until they turn you back from your religion (Islamic Monotheism) if they can. And whosoever of you turns back from his religion and dies as a disbeliever, then his deeds will be lost in this life and in the Hereafter, and they will be the dwellers of the Fire. They will abide therein forever”
[Baqarah 2:217]
Allaah will not His change, never. He will, however, have people support His religion and if you turn away He will replace you with those who will uphold His religion.
[Muhammad 47:38]
The religion is supported but it is up to us if we want to be support or if we want to reject the help that is being offered to us.
My brothers, it is important and obligatory for you to understand this and explain it to others in order for us all to be protected as a Muslim nation and to refute those who go against this great principle. To teach the ignorant from our friends and family, to advise them so that they are beware of the Fitnah that the Kuffar can cause.
Allaah Knows Best
May Allaah send His Peace and Blessings upon our blessed Messenger, his family, his companions and all those that follow him in goodness until the Last Day.
