Questions 14

Questions asked to Shaykh Saaleh ibn Ghanam as-Sadlaan [May Allaah preserve him] in his house after Salaat al-Jumu’ah

Tuesday 10/1/1433 - 6/12/2011

Question: What is the meaning of being extravagant and is a rich person allowed to buy an expensive car?

Answer: The person who is extravagant is the one wastes his money, spending on things he doesn’t need. For example, something he can buy for two riyal he spends twenty riyals.

As for a rich man buying an expensive house then this is permissible if he can afford it but it is better for him to be humble and not buy an expensive house.

Question: Is blackmail haraam?

Answer: Blackmail which involves stealing is Haraam. However if you try to persuade someone to do something in you favour in this way, it is still Haraam.

Question: What is the ruling on poetry?

Answer: As the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “That which is good of it is good and that which is bad of it is bad.” [Bukhaari in Adab al-Mufrad 2/869 and Fath al-Baaree 10/539, where Ibn Hajr said its Isnaad is Hasan]

Question: Is the amount that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] gave to his wives as Mahr an amount for us to follow, meaning do we take this amount as Sunnah?

Answer: The evidence from it is taken. People differ in their ability to pay the Mahr and its amount but what is intended is to keep the Mahr simple and low as the wives of the Prophet [May Allaah be Pleased with them all] did have Mahr above 450 Dirham (approximately 1487.5 grams of silver).

Question: What is meaning of the hadeeth ‘Don’t descend like a camel’, does it mean hands or knees? +

Answer: The hands. Meaning the children of Aadam in their Salaah aren’t allowed to resemble a camel so we are commanded to go down on our knees unless one has a reason to go down on their hands but the ruling here is that we are not allowed to resemble a camel and the camel goes down with his front first.

Question: How does one perform Tayammum?

Answer: The Shaykh gave me an illustration; to bang the earth and then to wipe your face and then your wipe your right hand and then your left hand. There is no difference of opinion in the order it is done however the scholars differed, do we bang the earth once or twice but the correct view is that banging the earth once is sufficient.

Question: Is it permissible to delay burial of a dead body in order to transport it from the non-Muslim country to a Muslim country?

Answer: Yes this is permissible, as long as the delay isn’t a long one. However some places have fridges to place the dead in like they do in America, this doesn’t affect the body however it is better to bury the deceased as soon as they die.

Question: If a person has an intention to do a good deed and then he sees a sign to encourage him, is following this taken as superstition?

Answer: This is a good and pleasant thing. Meaning being encouraged to do something good is good. Such as a man who decides to do Umrah and then everything is made easy for him, his travel is easy, there’s no traffic, the weathers good etc. then this is a good thing.

Questioner: Is this from superstition or is it a type of miracle?

Shaykh Saleh: Yes, it’s a type of miracle.

Question: What is the ruling on going on strike to get some of the rights of the workers?

Answer: This is not from the guidance of the Salaf as-Salih, rather this is harmful for the Muslims but one can have negotiations, this is permitted.

Questioner: Oh Shaykh, but what if the workers want to get their rights from companies that are oppressing them?

Shaykh Saleh: Like I said, it’s not from the guidance of the Salaf and they didn’t do anything like this. What they should do is sit down and have discussions with them.

Question: Is it permissible to sleep on ones stomach, knowing that this person can’t sleep any other way? ++

Answer: It is permissible if there is a need but if there is no need to do so then he shouldn’t.

Question: What is the meaning of the hadeeth ‘True dreams are from the 46th part of Prophethood’?

Answer: Meaning if one sees a dream that is telling him to do something good then it is like he is part of these 46 parts of Prophethood.

Question: Is it permissible to right (ص) [similar to those who write (SAW)] instead of writing Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him, when trying to write quick notes?

Answer: Some of the people do this and they even publish things like this, but its best to write it in full without shortening.

Question: The face of Allaah, does this mean direction or is it literal?

Answer: No it means Allaah has a Face in reality; however it is not like the face of anything else. Allaah has a Face in reality as this is implied also by the wording using the Arabic language, however we don’t say His Face is like any of that from His creation.

+ Shaykh Abd’ Allaah as-Sa’d [May Allaah preserve him] addressed this issue with the following;

It has been narrated by Aboo Hurayrah [May Allaah be Pleased with him] which is Mawqoof to him [meaning it is only attributed to him and not the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him)] that he said ‘No one of you should descend (whilst praying) like the declining of a stray camel’, this narration has the strongest chain of narration and it doesn’t mention the words ‘descend with his hands before his knees’.

This hadeeth is Mawqoof to Aboo Hurayrah [May Allaah be Pleased with him] but the narration in its grading is Munkar [denounced] and it is not relied on [ليس بشيء]. Rather the majority of the scholars from Ahl al-Hadeeth are of the view that one should descend with his knees before his hands and this is from the view of Aboo Daawood, Imaam Ahmad, ash-Shafi’ee and this is the most correct view.

There’s another narration in Musnad Ahmad that states that one should descend with the hands before the knees but this is not established. Moreover, it is authentically attributed to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab [May Allaah be Pleased with him] that he would go down with his knees before his hands and further to this narration being authentic, it is not narrated that any of the other Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them all] contradicted or rejected this view of ‘Umar.

It has been narrated that Ibn ‘Umar [May Allaah be Pleased with him] would descend with his hands first as reported in as-Saheeh but this hadeeth is not authentic and it was rejected by the likes of al-Bayhaqee, for the reason that the chain:

From Daawurdee - from ‘Ubayd Allaah - from Ibn ‘Umar

Is Munkar [denounced].

The hadeeth of Waail ibn Hujr has some weakness but it is the most authentic narration in this regard that states that the manner of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings be upon him] was to lead with his knees before his hands and the narration of ‘Umar supports this meaning.

So the most correct opinion on this issue is that the descending during Salaah is with the knees before the hands and this is the opinion of the majority of the scholars from Ahl al-Hadeeth, however this issue is broad and no need for strictness.

[Sharh Tamyeez by Imaam Muslim]

++ Shaykh Abd’ Allaah as-Sa’d [May Allaah preserve him] was asked about the hadeeth of sleeping on ones stomach and he replied; “The hadeeth was narrated by Bukhaari in Taareekh al-Kabeer and it has supporting narrations that strengthen it, so it is not permissible to sleep on ones stomach except if it is absolutely necessary.”
[Sharh Tamyeez by Imaam Muslim]
