The Prophet’s Mother Passes Away (Part 8)

-The Prophet’s father, ‘Abdullah, passed away when his mother, Aminah, was pregnant with him. He was sent by his father (the Prophet’s grandfather) ‘Abdul-Mutallib to al-Madeenah to import dates into Makkah. ‘Abdullah was 23 years old.

-It was habit at that time to send children out to the desert for custody, thus Prophet Muhammad was sent to Bani Sa’d at the age of four years old, and was breastfed by Halimah who was the wife of Haatirh bin Abi Uzzah from the Hawaazin tribe.

-He was later fed by Thuwaybah who was the slave of Abu Lahab, who also fed Hmazah the uncle of the Prophet.

-Whilst staying with Bani Sa’d, Jibreel came down and cut open the chest of the Prophet. He extracted his heart and washed it with Zam Zam water in a gold vessel and patched up his chest again. News got back to Bani Sa’d and asked for the Prophet to return to his mother.

-His mother Aminah travelled to al-Madeenah to visit her uncles who lived there and died on the way back to Makkah at a place called Abwaa. The Prophet was six years old at the time.

-Umm Ayman took custody of the Prophet temporarily.

-His grandfather took custody of ‘Abdul-Muttalib and maintained him and supported until he died and bequeathed that Abu Taalib take custody next.

Commentary
-The Prophet was born an orphan, this is referred to in Surah al-Duha.

-The Prophet “I am the son of the two who were slaughtered at the Ka’bah (Ismail and Abdullah)” meaning, Ibrahim was commanded to slaughter Ismail and Abdul-Muttalib made a vow that if Allah Gave him 10 boys consecutively, then he would slaughter one of them for his sake. Abdul-Muttalib drew lots and it was ‘Abdullah that was supposed to be slaughtered however ‘Abdul-Muttalib replaced slaughtering his son with one hundred camels.
The authenticity of the above is questionable however its become something well known between historians.

-He was breastfed by Thuwaybah and so was his uncle – this is possible because Thuwaybah was an old woman when she passed away and Hamzah was one of the younger uncles of the Prophet. Thus the way the scholars reconciled is that she fed Hamzah when he was young and later on her life, she fed the Prophet.

-Umm Ayman lived a long life and died 50 days after the death of the Prophet, also having migrated to al-Madeenah. She was a freed slave of the Prophet’s father, Abdullah. The Prophet used to visit her often and likewise the Companions did also. Abu Bakr and Umar used to visit her after the death of the Prophet.

-‘Abdul-Muttalib had great love and respect for Muhammad and gave him special care. Abu Taalib took custody and received a lot of success in his message and upbringing through him.

Animals - Pure vs. Impure (Part 16)

-Animals which are pure (text of Zaad al-Mustaqni)

Al-Uthaymeen explains that animals are either pure or impure or that which doesn’t have blood flowing within it, such as insects.

What is impure are animals which we are not permitted to eat, but other than that then they are pure.

The only exception made are cats and kittens:

-The Hadith of Aboo Qatadah where he was going to preform Wudhoo from a bowl in which a kitten had drank from, and the Prophet said about this, “They are not impure, they are domestic animals.” [Ahmad (5/296), Abu Dawud (75), an-Nasaa’i (1/54), at-Tirmidhi (92) - classed as Saheeh by him and Ibn Khuzaymah, al-Uqayli, Ibn Hibban, al-Haakim and others.]

The Hadith gives guidance that any animal which is domesticated carries the same ruling, so if an animal is domesticated and live amongst humans (such as donkeys), although they may be Haram to eat, the animal is pure.

Chapter: The major sins and the most serious of them

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdur-Rahman b. Abu Bakra that his father said:
We were in the company of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that he observed: Should I not inform you about the most grievous of the grave sins? (The Holy Prophet) repeated it three times, and then said: Associating anyone with Allah, disobedience to parents, false testimony or false utterance. The Prophet was reclining, then he sat up, and he repeated it so many times that we wished that he should become silent.

Explanation
-Imam Abdus-Salam says that major sins are different to minor sins as they come with a punishment, or warning, or a curse etc.

It can also be found if one understands the Maqsad of the Sharee'ah, even if no specific punishment is mentioned so cursing Allaah or defacing the Ka'bah or throwing the Mushaf in an impure place are all examples of this.

-Ibn Umar and Ibn Abbas both have narrated to say that being consistent and persistent on minor sins becomes a major sin.

-Imam Abdus-Salam mentions again in al-Qawaa'id that being persistent changes it into a major sin as well as combining many minor sins.

-Aq means to remove obedience, thus the command is to abstain from harming the parents in any way possible.

The Prophet is Born ﷺ (Part 7)

-The Prophet was born on a Monday on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awal on the year of which Abraha’s army was destroyed. This was known as the Year of the Elephants.

Commentary

-Shaykh ‘Abdur-Razzaaq said (like Al-Haakim before him) that the Prophet was born on a Monday, was made a prophet on a Monday, made Hijrah on a Monday, arrived to al-Madeenah on a Monday and died on a Monday.

-Nobody knows the actual date of his birth. Shaykh al-Albaani favoured that he was born on the 8th of Rabi al-Awal because of the narration of Jubayr bin Mut’im in al-Muwatta but the majority say it was the 12th.

-He was born in Makkah – the best of prophets born in the best of cities.

Blood - Pure vs. Impure (Part 15)

Al-Uthaymeen states that the correct opinion is that slight impurities is always overlooked.

A - What is defined as “small” is a issue of difference between the scholars, but as preceded “small” is left up to what is customarily.

B – Also, the author pointed out that blood may be pure and impure. Blood if of three types:

1-That which is always impure, such as blood that comes out of the private parts or blood in animals unless the animal is slaughtered properly (whatever remains is legal, see point #2).

2-Blood that is impure but a slight amount maybe overlooked such as blood left in an animal after sacrifice or human blood on ones clothes. The only exception given to human blood is the blood of a martyr, with the majority, as we are commanded not to wash this off.

3-Blood which is always pure, such as the blood of fish, the blood that remains in the organs of a sacrificed animal (veins, heart, brains, liver etc.) or insects. These never need washing and are pure as in the Hadeeth, “If a fly falls into one of your drinks then dip it in because one of its wings has a disease but the other has a cure.”

However, al-Uthaymeen is of the opinion that all types of blood are pure except if they come out of the private parts. He stated as evidence:

-There is no real evidence to suggest that blood as a substance is impure except for menses and Nifaas and the likes.

-The Prophet describes rules pertaining to menses, irregular bleeding (Istihaadah), injuries, Hijaamah and other issues connected to blood but never described blood as being always impure.

-The Muslims have always prayed Salaat whilst in battle and their clothes and weapons having blood on them.

-The body of a human is pure, so if a person has a cut on his hand and he bleeds, his hand is not considered as being impure all of sudden.

-If the blood in a dead fish is permitted then the blood of an alive human must be more so pure.

-Making blood impure by comparing to everything else that exits the body (urine, faeces, vomit etc,) is false, because that which you comparing it to is a product of bad smells and a process of waste.

-There’s a contradiction also – you say a small amount of blood is overlooked by other substances you have compared blood to isn’t overlooked!?

-Comparing blood and texts relating to menstruating blood is also false because menstruating blood comes out of the private parts, and again, is a product of waste and carries a bad smell.

So those who opined that blood is pure, other than which we have mentioned above, is a very strong view.

As for those who say blood is impure, they make two exceptions:
1.       It remains impure in all cases
2.       A small amount is overlooked

In response, al-Uthaymeen rejects this because there is no real evidence for the first exception then the second exception will be nullified by default, because impurities are not overlooked at all except with proof.

Chapter: Belief in Allah is the most virtuous of deeds

Abu Huraira reported:
The Messenger of Allah was asked about the best of deeds. He observed: Belief in Allah. He (the inquirer) said: What next? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Jihad (struggle to the utmost) in the cause of Allah. He (the inquirer) again said: What next? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Pilgrimage accepted into the grace of the Lord. In the. tradition narrated on the authority of Muhammad b. Ja'far (the words are) that he (the Holy Prophet) said: Belief in Allah and His Messenger. Muhammad b. Rafi and 'Abd b. Humaid, 'Abdur-Razzaq and Ma'mar and Zuhri have narrated a hadith like this on the authority of the same chain of transmitters.

Explanation
-Birr is all goodness, it can also mean acceptance, also reward, also no sin, also no deception
-The Hadeeth means be good to your parents by making things easy for them, if you can't then employ someone who will and if you can't then don't be harmful to people - this will be a Sadaqah to yourself from yourself.
-Shahaadatayn is included in Amaal
-Different narrations have different acts of Fada'il that's because the Haal is different, like Surah al-Balad, Qaadhee
-al-Baghawee states that in Udhiyah the more expensive the animal the better because we want the best kind of meat. But in freeing slaves the cheaper the better because we want to free as many as possible.

Small Amounts of Impurities are Overlooked (Part 14)

-Small amounts of impure blood, other than blood in liquids and foods, are overlooked (text of Zaad al-Mustaqni).

Chapter: Kufr for Those Who Leave Salaat

-A'mash narrated this hadith with the same chain of transmitters, with this change of words that he (the Satan) said:
I disobeyed and I am doomed to Hell.

-It is narrated on the authority of Jabir that he heard the Apostle (may peace and blessings be upon him) saying. Verily between man and between polytheism and unbelief is the negligence of prayer.

Explanation
-There is 'Ijmaa on the Kufr of a person who denies the obligation of the Salaat.

-The majority say if a person leaves Salat out of laziness he is still a Muslim but is told to repent.
'Ali bin Abi Taalib, Ahmad and others said that leaving off one Salaat out of laziness or negligence takes one out of Islaam.
The Hanafis say he is still a Muslim but must be scorned.

The first view is supported by an-Nawawi.

-Kufr is more general than Shirk as Shirk has a specific object of worship but Kufr is of types (such as arrogance, turning away, negligence, hypocrisy, doubt etc.).

-The Hanafis use the Hadeeth of Iblees to suggest that Sujood at-Tilaawah is Wajib, but the majority say a command (Amr) can be recommended (Nadb) and the statements of Iblees can't be used as proof.

Cleaning Urine and Faeces of Babies (Part 13)

-Urine of baby boys (who are not weaning) can be sprinkled over with water (text from Zaad al-Mustaqni).

Al-Uthaymeen explains that faeces for boys and urine and faeces for girls must be cleaned as normal – washed until the impurities have been removed.
However, boys who have not begun weaning yet can have their urine sprinkled over:

-Hadeeth of A’aishah that Umm Qays bin Muhsan al-Asdiyyah gave her child to the Prophet and he urinated on his clothes so the Prophet called for water and he didn’t wash it. [al-Bukhaaree (222) and Muslim (286)]

If a person asks about why the boy has been specified then we may say in response:

-The Wahy is sufficient for a reason.

-It is easier for the parents as urine from the penis spreads further and broader.

-Once he starts weaning, his urine changes in concentration and then must be washed.

Chapter: Emaan decreases with acts of disobedience

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah b. Umar that the Messenger of Allah observed:
O womenfolk, you should give charity and ask much forgiveness for I saw you in bulk amongst the dwellers of Hell. A wise lady among them said: Why is it, Messenger of Allah, that our folk is in bulk in Hell? Upon this the Prophet observed: You curse too much and are ungrateful to your spouses. I have seen none lacking in common sense and failing in religion but (at the same time) robbing the wisdom of the wise, besides you. Upon this the woman remarked: What is wrong with our common sense and with religion? He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Your lack of common sense (can be well judged from the fact) that the evidence of two women is equal to one man, that is a proof of the lack of common sense, and you spend some nights (and days) in which you do not offer prayer and in the month of Ramadan (during the days) you do not observe fast, that is a failing in religion.

Explanation
-It's not allowed to curse people in specific but we are allowed to state people are cursed according to a Wasf, such as an-Naamisaat, al-Waashimaat
-Women are deficient in accuracy (because they are not used to such roles) but it doesn't mean they are unintelligent in every aspect. Likewise, they are deficient in worship but may excel through other means.
