Kitaab al-Emaan: The Differences Between al-Islaam and al-Emaan (Part 1)

Imaam an-Nawawi discusses the differences between al-Islaam and al-Emaan:

-Some said Islaam is apparent and Emaan is inner

-Some said there is no difference between the two

He quotes al-Khattaabi who said that the correct opinion depends on the context, thus technically all are correct. This is because the situation of the Muslim the changes: Islaam is the default status of the Muslim but it can increase to the next stage which is al-Emaan (as his belief, statements and deeds increase in goodness). Likewise, Islaam is also the apparent state of a Muslim whereas Emaan refers to his inner-beliefs.

Fitnah al-Maal: Wealth Creates a False Sense of Obedience and Infallibility (Part 12)

From the worse of mindsets that most people have in relation to their wealth is that they feel that they have to compare themselves to others.

They constantly liken themselves to those who have more than them, just like what the companions of Qaroon did. They perceived wealth equaling to status. The more the wealth an individual has, the higher level of status and nobility.

His proposal to any woman would be accepted. If such a person attends a gathering, the audience hang on to his every word. This is the case even if he doesn’t spend a penny, but despite the fact that he has wealth, sufficient is this for his reputation and superiority to be affirmed. If he orders a command, they will not be reluctant to obey him.

However, Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted, Said:

“And obey not everyone who swears much, and is considered worthless,”

Up to the Aayah:

“14. (He was so) because he had wealth and children.

15. When Our Verses (of the Qur'an) are recited to him, he says: "Tales of the men of old!"”
[al-Qalam 68:10-15]

Just because a person has wealth, it doesn’t make him infallible and unreservedly obeyed. What these Aayaat are asking you is, “Just because he has wealth and children, do you make this the criteria for obedience?”

Nourishment of the Heart

Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

Knowledge is the food and drink for the heart, and it’s also its medication. So life of ones heart totally depends on it (i.e. knoweldge). If the heart loses knowledge then it will die.

Forty Benefits - Crossing the Siraat (Part 8)

Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said in his book Jalaa al-Afhaam in the Chapter: The Benefits and Virtues Gained by Sending Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon the Prophet:

37 – Sending Peace and Blessings upon the Prophet is a means in which ones feet will be made firm on the Siraat (a bridge that everyone must cross – it lies over the Hell-fire, it is thinner than a hair and sharper than a sword) and will help him cross it with ease. This is based on the Hadeeth of ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin Samarah [may Allaah be Pleased with him] in which the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “I saw in my dream a man from my Ummah who was lagging across the Siraat. He was crawling across it and would frequently pause (and then carrying crawling). Then his good deeds of sending Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon me came to him, and it helped him stand upright on his feet and he crossed the Siraat safely.” [1]

[Jalaa’ al-Afhaam Fee Fadl as-Salaat wa as-Salaam ‘ala Muhammad Khayr al-Anaam (Pg. 515 - 527)]

[1] [Reported by Ibn ‘Asaakir in Taareekh Dimishq (9/967), at-Tabaraanee in al-Majma’ (7/180), and others. Ibn al-Qayyim said about this Hadeeth, “I heard Shaykh al-Islaam (Ibn Taymiyyah) extol this Hadeeth and the beliefs of Ahl as-Sunnah conform with it; the Hadeeth is Hasan (Waabil as-Sayyib, Pg. 114)]. Imaam al-Qurtubee said (indicating on its authenticity), "This is an extremely virtuous Hadeeth - a special deed which helps a person in a particular situation." [at-Tadhkirah (Pg. 293)]

Conditions for at-Tayammum: First Condition - It Must be Earth (Part 12)

Conditions for at-Tayammum

1-At-Tayammum can only be done with grains earth. Al-Uthaymeen explains that at-Tayammum as certain conditions and this is one of them based on the opinion of the Hanbalee Madhab. They are of the opinion that is must be grains of earth (such as soil etc.) and if one doesn’t find this then there is no at-Tayammum.

Grains of earth includes anything which is granular but not sand. So, if a person is in a desert and finds only sand or mud due to mixed sand and water, then he prays without Tayammum, according to the Hanbalee Madhab, because they view that at-Tayammum cant be preformed with sand.

Their evidence is as follows:

-The Hadeeth, “The earth and its grains has been made as a purification.” [Muslim (522)]

-The Hadeeth, “The earth and its grains have been made as a purification.” [Reported by Ahmad (1/98) and classes as Hasan by al-Haythamee in Majma’ (1/261)]

Al-Uthaymeen explains that there is another Hadeeth which doesn’t mention “grains”:

-“The earth has been made as a place of praying and purification.” [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (307) and Muslim (291)]

PRINCIPLE: if we have two different wording then one general (the earth) and one specific (the grains of the earth) then if one accomplishes something based on the general wording then the specific one is not binding.

Based on this, the specific wording of “grains” doesn’t necessarily mean that it has specified the Hadeeth which mention “earth” alone.

Another example, if a person says, “Feed the students of such and such school.” The command here is general, i.e. to feed all the students of that school. However, if the same person thereafter says, “Feed Zayd” and he is part of the group of students – then the second wording doesn’t specify his previous command.

PRINCIPLE: The Hanbalees use a principle that states that if the ruling of two separate texts are the same then we take the wording which is more specific.

However, al-‘Uthaymeen says that this is to with characteristics and not nouns. For example, if a person says, “Feed the students of such and such school” but then says, “Feed the hard-working students” then this means that the previous command has been specified by the characteristics given in the latter command. This is known as Haml al-Mutlaq ala al-Muqayyad.

So Uthaymeen summarises that the correct opinion that at-Tayammum made from anything that is from the earth sufficies and it doesn’t have to be grains of earth.

The proof for this opinion includes the following:

-“and you find no water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands” [5:6]

Uthaymeen explains that the word Saeed has been used to mean anything (stone, dust, sand, mud etc.) on the face of this earth.

-The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] never specified at-Tayammum to be from grains or that granular earth be collected in order to make at-Tayammum.

And Allaah Knows Best.

Khabr Waahid: Introduction of Saheeh Muslim of an-Nawawee (Part 5)

The majority say Khabr Wahid is Dhunn but necessitates acting upon it if it's proven
Dhahirees and Mutazilah say it's never knowledge and not acted upon.

Al-Qadariyyah, ar-Raafidah, the Mu’tazilah and some Dhahirees said we reject it based on 'Aql whilst others say they reject it based on Daleel (i.e. the conditions of it reaching the level of Ilm have not been met).

The Mu'tazilah say it must be at least narrated two by two in each part of the chain, such as al-Jubaa’ee.

Nawawee states that the correct view is that it's 'Ilm as the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) sent messengers by themselves, and the Khulpha after him did the same, likewise the Salaf. Also, 'Aql doesn't negate acting upon Khabr Waahid.

Fitnah al-Maal: Indulgence in Haraam Wealth Has Destroyed Good Transactions (Part 11)

“Allah will destroy Riba (usury) and will give increase for Sadaqat (deeds of charity, alms, etc.)” [al-Baqarah 2:276]

Why is interest destroyed? Why is charity increased? The answer is to spare a thought for the poor and needy. Likewise we can ask in answering in these questions, why have people overly-exerted themselves in taking loans and falling into debt? Going back just ten years, the percentage of debt in ratio to the population was far less.

Today, loans and debts are being multiplied daily. Why is this? The doors of forbidden transactions are made easily accessible to them. They enter its doors without even accounting themselves. For example, there are those who are constantly late to work, yet they receive full salaries without being penalized.

This is a door of Haraam which has been opened to him and he continues to walks through its gates. Others, they take the wealth of others unlawfully and it becomes something easy to him also.

Therefore, whenever Haraam becomes easily accessible to a people, they become used to it and all blessings are removed and lost. As a result, they end up gaining their provisions and spending it without there being any benefit behind it whatsoever.

The doors of unlawful transactions are made fair-seeming to them, they indulge in it and the end result is that they are left with nothing, nothing remaining from the provisions they have worked hard to get.

Every single one of us can relate to this and think of examples of it. What do you have before and what do you have left? How much did you calculate to spend yet you are left with a lot less, why?! How is it that others earn less but they have more? How many can we think of that are wealthy and have high paid salaries, but they have no blessings in it. At the end of each month they are filled with stress and grief and their accounts are empty.

Blessings have been lost. When blessings are lifted, the provisions you have, no matter how much you think you own, will be of no benefit to you.

Life is Useless Except for Knowledge and Piety

The noble Companion Aboo Dardaa [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said, “Life is useless except for two types of people; (1) those who resist their tongues and are pious and (2) the scholar who speaks the truth.”

Forty Benefits - Your Name is Presented to the Prophet ﷺ(Part 7)

Ibn al-Qayyim [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

36 – Sending Peace and Blessing of Allaah upon the Prophet is a cause for ones name being presented to the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] as it occurs in the Hadeeth,

“Your salutations for me are presented to me.” [Reported byIbn ‘Adayy in al-Kamaal (3/944)]

And he also said [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him]:

“Surely, Allaah has Placed an Angel at my grave which informs me of the peace and salutations that my Ummah send upon me.” [Reported an-Nasaa’ee in al-Kubraa (1114)]

It is sufficient as an honour for a Muslim for his name to be given to the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him].

If a Person Has No Water and No Earth, He Prays in That State (Part 11)

-If a person doesn’t find water or earth, or is unable to use either, then he prays in that state (i.e. without purifying himself).

Al-Uthaymeen explains that this is because he is unable and the evidence to support this view is as follows:

-The Statement of the Most High, fear Him as much as you can” [at-Taghabun: 16]

- The Hadeeth, “If I order you to do something then do it as much you are able to.” [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (7288) and Muslim (1337)]

-The time for prayer, in this scenario, is more important than seeking to purify oneself.

Lying with the Mu'tazilah is Based on Qasd Alone: Introduction of Saheeh Muslim of an-Nawawee (Part 4)

Nawawi said its still a lie but one may not be sinful if he doesn’t have the intention or he makes a mistake

Fitnah al-Maal: Haraam Wealth is Only a Cause for Reduction (Part 10)

“Truly, your Lord enlarges the provision for whom He wills and straitens (for whom He wills)” [al-Israa 17:30]

If you realise this valuable lesson, then we need to ask the question; how can we gain provision and use it to gain the Pleasure of Allaah, the Most High.

Do we gain provision by deceiving or lying or usurping the wealth of others by being cunning in transactions? No, by Allaah, even if these examples bring about wealth and increase your bank balance somewhat, however, the harm and blame is far greater.

“And that which you give in gift (to others), in order that it may increase (your wealth by expecting to get a better one in return) from other people's property, has no increase with Allah, but that which you give in Zakat seeking Allah's Countenance then those, they shall have manifold increase.” [ar-Room 30:39]

There is an overwhelming number of texts that prohibit gaining your provision in an unlawful manner. These texts all describe that unlawful means of provision in fact destroy the wealth of the person and doesn’t increase it. It removes any trace of blessings from it.

Allah will destroy Riba (usury) and will give increase for Sadaqat (deeds of charity, alms, etc.)” [al-Baqarah 2:276]

The Best of Those Will Come After You, Believing in the Book

On the authority of ‘Amr bin Shu’ayb from his father from his grandfather that the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him] asked:

“Do you know which creation is most complete in Emaan?”

The Companions [may Allaah be Pleased with them all] replied by saying, “The Angels.”

He [Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him] said, “Why would they not belief when they witness their Lord (i.e. asking who else)?”

The Companions [may Allaah be Pleased with them all] replied by saying, “The Prophets.”

He [Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him] said, “Why would they not believe in the Revelation when it is directly Revealed upon them (i.e. asking who else)?”

The Companions [may Allaah be Pleased with them all] replied by saying, “Then us (i.e. your Companions).”

He [Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him] said, “Why would you not believe whilst you witness the Messenger of Allaah (i.e. asking who else)?”

Then the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “The best of those who Emaan are those who will come after you, they will have with them the Book (i.e. the Quraan) and they believe in it.”

Seeking Water is Waajib before at-Tayammum (Part 10)

-It is must to seek water before performing at-Tayammum. Al-‘Uthaymeen explains that that this is Waajib. The evidence is as follows:

-“If you do not find water” [5:6]

Uthaymeen explains that one needs to find water, and if one is negligent then they will be sinful.

A-One must seek water, or act upon what is likely. So if he doesn’t find water after seeking it, or there is no one to ask or he thinks that most likely he will not find water – only then is at-Tayammum permissible.

B-If a person forgets he has water or is able to get hold of water and performs at-Tayammum, then he must repeat his purification/prayer.

NOTE: If a person misses a pillar (Rukn) or a condition (Shurt) of an act of worship, then forgetfulness or mistake doesn’t suffice.

NOTE: In Fiqh there is a difference between acting upon what is safer (احوط) and doing what is obligatory (واجب) – the former is recommended but permissible to forego if there is a reason.

C-At-Taymmum suffices for all minor impurities, such as passing wind, passing urine and stole, sleep etc. So whatever nullifies Wudhoo also nullifies at-Tayammum and one can make up his purification with at-Tayammum as he would do with Wudhoo.

D-It is permissible to make at-Tayammum for a physical impure substance on his body. Al-Uthaymeen explains that for example a drop of urine falls on his leg and he doesn’t have water to wash it, he can use earth. This is the opinion of the Madhab, however al-Uthaymeen favours the view that at-Tayammum is only legislated for spiritual impurities (major and minor) and not to remove Nasajah.

E-If a person is imprisoned and he is unable to use water then he may make at-Tayammum. This is the opinion of the Hanablees, however al-Uthaymeen points out that some scholars have stated that at-Tayammum is only permitted if a person is travelling. Al-Uthaymeen favours the opinion of the Madhab.

And Allaah Knows Best.

Principles on al-Jarh wa at-Ta’deel Taken from the Introduction of Sharh Muslim of an-Nawawee (Part 3)

-Jarh is Waajib for the one who is able, it’s from Naseehah to the Muslim.

-Jarh and Ta'deel must be done with accurate information and not to be too lenient or too harsh.

-If a person is not qualified then he is not allowed to part take in Jarh wa Ta’deel.

-If he is not Adil it Dabit himself then he is not allowed to either.

-There is no set number rather Jarh or Ta'deel can be accepted from just one scholar, as it's a form of Khabr and Khabr Waahid is acceptable from a trustworthy source.

-The Shafi'ees say that Jarh must be detailed, others said not, whilst others said it must be detailed if it's not an Imam.

-Jarh is given precedence to Ta'deel only if both are Mufasaar.

-Some said we follow the greater in number.

The correct view in matters of Jarh or Ta'deel is to follow the evidence.

Fitnah al-Maal: Nations Fell Because They Failed to Recognize The Greatness of the One Who Gave Them Wealth (Part 9)

Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted, Says:

“Do they think that We enlarge them in wealth and children. We hasten unto them with good things (in this worldly life so that they will have no share of good things in the Hereafter)? Nay, but they perceive not.” [al-Mu’minoon 23: 55-56]

Allaah, the Most High, has mentioned in the Qur’aan nations that came before us, they had amassed riches, but where are they and their wealth? Everything has perished!

“Like those before you, they were mightier than you in power, and more abundant in wealth and children. They had enjoyed their portion awhile, so enjoy your portion awhile as those before you enjoyed their portion awhile; and you indulged in play and pastime (and in telling lies against Allah and His Messenger Muhammad ) as they indulged in play and pastime. Such are they whose deeds are in vain in this world and in the Hereafter. Such are they who are the losers.” [at-Tawbah 9:69]

Take heed in the story of Sulaymaan [Peace be upon him] with Bilkees. He called her to al-Islaam but she initially responded to his call by sending him gifts and handouts in an attempt not to go war if she failed to accept his invitation to al-Islaam. What was his response?

He said: "Will you help me in wealth? What Allah has given me is better than that which He has given you! Nay, you rejoice in your gift!"” [an-Namal 27:36]

He realized, who is the One Who Gives wealth? Clearly, it is the Lord of all Honour and Glory. The very first trial that a person is tested with recognition. Does he recognize that Allaah is the One Who Gives wealth? If he does, he will then have Tawakkul on the One Who bought it. He supplicates to Allaah, the Most High, alone to provide for him and make vast his provisions.

Forty Benefits of Supplicating for the Prophet - Understanding the Effects of Dhikr (Part 6)

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have Mercy on him) said:

34 - Sending Peace and Blessings upon the Prophet is a cause for an increase of love – us gaining the love of the Prophet and our love for him.

35 – It is means for which the guidance of the slave and the guidance that he receives in his heart is increased. Every time he sends the Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon him, his heart becomes filled with love for the Prophet. Thus, there remaining no contradiction in his heart against his teachings. There remaining no doubt in that which he came with. Rather, the person will find that the more he supplicates for him, the more he finds his heart conforming to his traditions – reading from his Sunnah constantly, taking from the light of his message, succeeded with the various disciplines and sciences that he taught. The more he increases in this, the more wisdom he gains for himself, and his intelligence and ability to understand exceeds.

For this reason, the People of Knowledge, those who are well-informed of the Sunnah and its guidance, are the first to follow it. This shows the difference between the way they send Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon the Messenger and the way the common-folk do. You often see laymen raising their voices in supplicating for the Prophet, showing physical love and energy for him but they are ignorant, unlike the scholar who sends Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon him, knowing what the Prophet came with and following his Sunnah.  Their supplication for the Prophet is completely of another level. The more they send Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon the Prophet, the more they increase in knowledge, love and by doing this, the more they increase in actualising the very supplication they are making for him, asking Allaah to have Mercy on him and protect him (and his teachings).

This is just like the Dhikr of Allaah. The more the slave knows about Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted, the more he obeys Him, loves Him and his Dhikr of Him is not based on an empty heart of mind which is filled with negligence.

This point (point 35) is something well-known in the texts of the Sharee'ah and is something that can be clearly observed; there is a huge difference between the one who knows and loves and then does Dhikr and the one who doesn’t.

If a person knows the Names and Attributes of Allaah, then he increases in love for Allaah. His heart then becomes a slave to this love for his Master. His Praises Him and Extols His Majesty. As opposed to the one who does Dhikr of Allaah which his tongue alone. He has no idea of what he is uttering. His actions don’t implement what he is saying (in the Dhikr).

So true Dhikr is to know and implement what the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] came with. This is true life and the soul of it.

Preforming at-Tayammum When it is Not Obligatory is Permitted (Part 6)

-The Hanbalees have stated that At-Tayammum is not legislated except in impurities which is Waajib (such as Ghusl from major impurities or Wudhoo for an obligatory prayer) and not what is Mustahab (such as at-Tayammum to pray a Mustahab prayer or renewing Wudhoo/Tayammum).

They argued as evidence:

-The Statement of the Most High, and you find no water, then perform Tayammum” [5:6]

Uthaymeen points out that this is purification for a reason which is Waajib.

-At-Tayammum is obligated out of necessity and something that has been legislated due to necessity is only legislated if it Waajib, not if it is Mustahab.

The second scholarly view is that it is permitted to perform at-Tayammum for a Mustahab reason. They argued with the following:

-The Hadeeth in which the Prophet was impure (minor) and he performed at-Tayammum in order to return the Salaam of a person who had greeted him [Reported by Muslim (370)] (because the Prophet disliked remembering Allaah except if he had Wudhoo.)

-If we using earth has been legislated in the absence of water then it takes the same ruling as water – either we make Wudhoo for something which is Waajib or something which is Mustahab. Therefore, there is no difference in the reasons and nullifiers of Wudhoo and at-Tayammum.

The latter is the one favoured by Ibn al-’Uthaymeen.

Benefits From the Introduction of Saheeh Muslim: Reason for Quoting Weak Narrations (Part 2)

Weak narration were transmitted so that:

-We can have a record of what is Saheeh and Da'eef (and in between).
-At certain times, we can use weak narrations as support other Ahaadeeth.
-So that we can compare which narrations and texts are stronger in Diraayah and Riwaayah, (thus sieving out what is Shaadh etc.).
-That they maybe used elsewhere as supporting, such as in matters of at-Targheeb and at-Tahreeb or in stories etc.

Fitnah al-Maal: True Wealth is Not Material Nor Physically Touched (Part 8)

Look how the children of Aadam want to cling on to their wealth, but what is wealth? What are your true capital sums?

The Hadeeth continues, “Oh Children of Aadam! Your wealth is in your clothing but it wears out. Your wealth is in your food but it digests and becomes waste. Your wealth is in your charity and this is what remains[1].”

This is definition of your capital sums. This is the reality of the wealth and riches that you own. The money in your bank accounts is no use to you. Your true wealth is what is mentioned in this Hadeeth; your clothing, your food and your charity. The reward for spending on these remain, otherwise wealth is of no use.

Wealth is not materialistic or physical. The people of Eemaan realise that wealth is only a means to achieve their goals. Its simile is like the similitude of the bathroom; the people of Eemaan only enter it to relieve themselves and leave. This is the reality of wealth, that it comes, is used for the purpose of obedience and then it leaves. They only seek that which will benefit them by it and to the degree of need they have for it.

The similitude given by those who indulge themselves in their riches is like those who are enter the bathroom and spend hours in their seeking to beautify themselves, however, there is no benefit in this for them. They have not benefitted by this in the slightest. Their wealth amassed in their accounts doesn’t benefit them at all. This is not their wealth.
