Also from the misconceptions of the Murji'ah is
that they believe that al-Emaan is static, it does not fluctuate, not increasing
nor decreasing. The only exception is if one increases in their inner belief (beliefs
alone without actions) or if one has believed and has had Emaan for a long
time. For this reason, some of them claim that their Emaan is of the same
eminence as the Emaan of Aboo Bakr, 'Umar, Jibreel and Mikaa'eel, may Allaah's
Peace be upon them.
However, the texts of the Sharee'ah nullifies
such an innovative claim quite evidently.
Allaah, the Most High, Said:
“He it is Who
sent down As-Sakinah (calmness and tranquillity) into
the hearts of the believers, that they may grow more in Faith along with their
(present) Faith” [al-Fath 48: 4]
Here, does the descending of tranquility
increase the believer in their Emaan from the very time that they were created
or did this tranquility increase their Emaan in the very time that the Aayah
was revealed?
Allaah, the Most High, Said:
“and the
believers may increase in Faith (as this Qur'an is the truth) ” [al-Mudathir 74: 31]
And He, the Glorified, Said:
“As for those who
believe, it (the Quraan) has increased their Faith” [at-Tawbah 9: 124]
And the Most High, Said:
“Those (i.e.
believers) unto whom the people (hypocrites) said, "Verily, the people
(pagans) have gathered against you (a great army), therefore, fear them." But
it (only) increased them in Faith, and they said: "Allah (Alone) is
Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us)."” [aal 'Imraan 3:173]
These Aayaat clearly refute their false belief
that all Emaan is of one degree and that it does not fluctuate.
Allaah, the Most High, Said:
“And when the
believers saw Al-Ahzab (the Confederates), they said:
"This is what Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad
) had promised us, and Allah and
His Messenger (Muhammad
) had spoken the truth, and it
only added to their faith and to their submissiveness (to Allah).” [al-Ahzaab 33:22]
And He, the Glorified and the Exalted, Said:
“And (remember)
when Ibrahim (Abraham) said, "My Lord! Show me how You give life to the
dead." He (Allah) said: "Do you not believe?" He [Ibrahim
(Abraham)] said: "Yes (I believe), but to be stronger in Faith.”"” [al-Baqarah 2:260]
It is also reported in the Saheeh that Aboo
Sa'eed narrated that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him]
said, "The people of Jannah will enter Jannah and the people of the
Hellfire will enter Hellfire, then Allaah, the Most High, will Say, "Take
out from the Hellfire anyone who bears in his heart the tantamount of a mustard
seed of al-Emaan.[1]""
It is also narrated in the Saheeh that the
Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, "A man may be
described as being extremely strong, extremely handsome and extremely intelligent but there does not exist a atom's weight of Emaan in his heart.[2]"
Moreover, the Companions were in consensus that
the Emaan of a person increases and decreases. It has been narrated that Aboo
Dardaa, Aboo Hurayrah, 'Umayr bin Habeeb al-Khatamee [May Allaah be Pleased
with them all] all used the wording, 'decrease of al-Emaan'.
Therefore, the belief of the Murji'ah that
al-Emaan is static and does not fluctuate, that al-Emaan is merely based on a
persons certainty in their hearts and does not include their statements and
deeds, that al-Emaan is all of one level, either you have it or you don’t and
if you do have it, it is the same as quality for everyone, is clearly a
baseless notion which the texts of the Sharee'ah empathetically refutes.
