1-Wipiing the hands is
up to the wrist. Al-‘Uthaymeen explains that some stated that we must wipe up
to the elbow. They quoted as evidence:
-“and
your hands (forearms) up to the elbows” [al-Maa’idah 5:6]
In this Aayah we make Qiyaas (analogy) between al-Wudhoo and
at-Tayammum.
However, this Qiyaas is invalid because:
-at-Tayammum can’t be compared to Wudhoo as the limbs and sequence is
completely different.
-purification using
water is different to purification using earth.
-water is an actual
cleaning agent whereas earth isn’t.
-the principle of Haml al-Mutlaq ala al-Muqayyad applies here, so we
take the description which is specific to at-Tayammum rather than the general
to Wudhoo.
-The Hadeeth, “at-Tayammym is two beatings of the earth. One beating to
wipe over the face and the second beating to wipe over the hands up to the
elbows.” [ad-Daaraqutnee (1/180), al-Haakim (1/179), al-Bayhaqee (1/207) but
the Hadeeth is weak du to the presence of Abdul-Haqq al-Ishbeelee as stated by
Ibn Hajar and others. See: at-Talkhees al-Habeer (208) and al-Buloogh (130)]
However, the correct
opinion is to wipe up to the wrist. The evidence for this includes:
-“perform
Tayammum with clean earth and rub therewith your faces and hands” [5:6]
-The word hand in the Quraan refers to the wrist, “Cut off (from the wrist
joint) the (right) hand of the thief”
[5:38]
-The Hadeeth of ‘Ammaar bin Yaasir that the Prophet ““It is sufficient
for you to beat the earth and wipe over your face and then right outer hand and
left outer arm.” Then he wiped off the earth that was on his hands. [Reported
by al-Bukhaaree (337) and Muslim (347)]
There is no mention of wiping up to the elbow here.

And Allaah Knows best.
