Riyadh as-Saaleheen: Taqwa (Lesson 5)

TAQWA
An-Nawawi:
Taqwa comes from seeking a protection (الوقاية)
It refers to both commandments and prohibitions
It is only the people of Taqwa who will gain His Jannah
Therefore the instruction is to remain firm upon it:

(3: 102)
Question: Why do we worship?

(65:2-3)
This Ayah has a series of conditions and results

(8:29)
Pillars of taqwa:
1. Fear of Allah
2. Hope in Allah
3. Obedience
4. Leaving disobedience
5. Tawakkul

69 - It was asked, "O Messenger of Allah! Who is the most honourable amongst mankind?" He () said, "The most honourable of them is one who is the most pious of them." They said, "We are not asking about this". He said, "Then, the most honourable of men was Yusuf (Joseph), the Prophet of Allah, the son of Allah's Prophet, who was the son of the Prophet of Allah, who was the son of the Khalil of Allah (i.e., Ibrahim ())' They said, "We are not asking you about this." He enquired, "Are you then asking me about the classes of the Arabs? The best of them in the Pre- Islamic Period of Ignorance are the best of them in Islam, provided they comprehend the religious knowledge".

ILM is needed for Taqwa!
Open Mushaf at the End of Surah al-Furqan
What description do you see and how is the Surah concluded?

Fakhr ar-Razi said:
Know, that Allah the Glorified mentioned the slaves of ar-Rahman because they are those who abstain from Shirk, murder and fornication…Those, even if they fell, who make Tawbah.
Al-Hasan said, “Here we have a comparison between two parties; the slaves of ar-Rahman are those who have Tawhid and this leads them to abstain from major sins.”
Tafsir ar-Razi, 24/483

70 – "The life of the world is sweet and green. Allah makes you generations succeeding one another so that He may try you in respect of your actions. So beware of the beguilement’s of the world and those of women. The first trial of Banu Israel was through women".

All desires lead to something imperfect; if it’s Halal it leads to amazement/indulgence (is there an exception?)

If it’s Haram it leads to slavery and degrading of oneself

Even worship isn’t perfect in its enjoyment because not always able, maintaining Khushoo etc.

Pure pleasure has been made in the Akhirah alone

71 –
O Allah! I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity and self- sufficiency
-Dua for steadfastness comes with the idea of needing and humility to Allah mixed with Tawhid and Mercy
72 – "He who has taken an oath (to do something) but found something else better than that (which brings him closer to Allah), then he should do that which is better in piety (and he should expiate for the breaking of oath)"
73 - Abu Umamah (May Allah be pleased with him) said:
I heard Messenger of Allah () during the sermon of the Farewell Pilgrimage saying, "Be mindful of your duty to Allah; perform your five daily Salat, observe Saum during the month (of Ramadan) , pay the Zakat on your properties and obey your leaders; (if you do so) you will enter the Jannah of your Rubb".
Question: How are these Ahadith connected to Taqwa?
-One must review his affairs and choose what’s best
-Islam doesn’t want for us hardship or poverty, but to use the Dunya for our Akhirah
-We don’t know how long we have, so seek to fulfil all obligations now!
-Ultimately, everyone is an accountant for himself
And Allah Knows best
