لَوْ أَنْزَلْنَا هَذَا الْقُرْآنَ عَلَى جَبَلٍ لَرَأَيْتَهُ خَاشِعًا مُتَصَدِّعًا مِنْ خَشْيَةِ اللَّهِ وَتِلْكَ الْأَمْثَالُ نَضْرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
“If We had sent down this Qur'an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.”
[Hashr 59:21]
Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saaleh al’Uthaymeen [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said about this Aayah;
Mountains are from the most solid and hardest things that have been created. So for this reason rocks and stones have been used, as well as mountains, as an example and a comparison to emphasize the hardness of something.
Allaah, the Most High says;
“Then your hearts became hardened after that, being like stones or even harder. For indeed, there are stones from which rivers burst forth, and there are some of them that split open and water comes out, and there are some of them that fall down for fear of Allah . And Allah is not unaware of what you do”
[Baqarah 2:74]
So had Allaah revealed this Quraan on a mountain, then you would see it crumble in humility. Not only this; from the severity of fear of Allaah the mountain, from being a solid and elevated structure, would become low and crumbled.
However it was revealed on our hearts. Our hearts, except for the one Allaah has mercy on, is wasted, and it is hard, and it doesn’t open nor change. As for the believers, they believe in what has been revealed to them from the Ayaat of Allaah, it increases them in Eeman but the ones who have a sickness in their hearts, it increases them in filth and defiance, May Allaah protect us from this.
So had this Quraan been revealed on a mountain then it would come down, it would crumble due to the fear of Allaah and the greatness of what Allaah has revealed upon it.

He [May Allaah have Mercy on him] also said;
Yes, the hearts of some people have become hard and they have no softness within them. So you will find these hearts not fearing, and if they are tested with a great test, May Allaah protect us, you will find their hearts become like rocks or even harder. To rid this, one must recite the Noble Quran as it causes the hearts to soften, so if one recites and ponders on its meaning his heart will be scrutinized. The proof is the saying of Allaah, the Most High;
“If We had sent down this Qur'an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.”

And these are mountains and rocks so how about our hearts?

Shaykh Saaleh ibn Fawzaan al-Fawzaan [May Allaah Preserve him] also explains;
“If We had sent down this Qur'an upon a mountain, ...”

This ayah provides evidence that the Quraan was sent down by Allaah, Exalted and Glorified He is, and that the Quraan is not created as the deviant sects called the Jahmiyyah and Mu’tazilah say. It also refutes the idea of the unbelievers that the Quraan was from the speech of The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him]. Rather, it was revealed by Allaah and in it are messages that bring warning and it creates fear, to the extent that had it been revealed on mountain and rocks, even they would recognize that this from Allaah, the Exalted and Glorified.
Allaah, the Most High says;
“Then your hearts became hardened after that, being like stones or even harder. For indeed, there are stones from which rivers burst forth, and there are some of them that split open and water comes out, and there are some of them that fall down for fear of Allah . And Allah is not unaware of what you do”

So, things that are solid beings would come to know that this is from their Lord, Perfect and Exalted He is, having fear of Him. Had it been revealed on a mountain then you…
“…you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah…”

This shows the greatness of this Quraan and the magnitude of the hearts of Bani Aadam. These hearts have the Quran within it and despite this, it doesn’t crumble, despite the Quraan being able to bring down mountains.

This fact also shows the hardness of the hearts of some of us humans, it is even harder than rocks.
