The Status of Those Who Fast in the Summer

It is reported in az-Zuhd of Ibn al-Mubaarak (Pg. 461), Ibn Abee ad-Dunyaa in al-Hawaatif (Pg. 23), Ibn Abee Shaybah (2/273), ‘Abdur-Razaaq (4/308), ar-Rooyaanee in his Musnad (1/374) and Aboo Na’eem in Hilyah al-Awliyaa’ (1/260) that Aboo Moosaa al-‘Ashaaree [may Allaah be Pleased with him] said, “Allaah has made it compulsory that those who fast facing dire thirst on a hot day during the days of the Dunya, that He quenches their thirst on the Day of Judgement.” For this reason, Aboo Moosaa [may Allaah be Pleased with him] used to purposely fast during the summer.

It is reported in al-Bayhaqee in Shu’ab al-Emaan (3/21) on the authority of Aboo Maalik al-Asharee that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “There are six types of Jihaad which are superior to all other forms of it; fighting the enemy for the Sake of Allaah on the battle-field with your weapon, fasting in summer, having the best of patience when afflicted with a calamity, leaving off arguments and disputes even if you have the truth with you, coming early to the Salaat even when the weather is bad and making Wudhoo in the bitter cold.”
