The Ruling on Sending Peace and Blessings of Allaah Upon the Messenger

Ibn al-Qayyim [may Allaah have Mercy on him and Purify his soul] said:
The scholars differed on the ruling of sending Peace and Blessings of Allaah upon the Messenger of Allaah when hearing his name.

Aboo Ja’far at-Tahaawee al-Hanafee was of the opinion that it is Waajib to supplicate by sending peace and blessings of Allaah upon him every time his name is mentioned.

Others were of the opinion that sending peace and blessings of Allaah upon him when hearing his name was not an obligation, but something Mustahab (recommended), thus one is not sinning if he doesn’t do it.

Others were of the opinion that it is obligatory to do it at least once in their lifetime because the command is an unrestricted command (الْأَمر الْمُطلق) which doesn’t necessitate repetition. So fulfilling the obligation to do it is is sufficed if one does it just once in their lifetime. This final opinion is the opinion of the majority; from them is Aboo Haneefah, Maalik, at-Thawree, al-Awzaa’ee and others.

Qaadee ‘Iyyaad and Ibn Abdul-Barr also narrated this to be the opinion of the majority (and the correct opinion).

Ash-Shaafi’ee and Ahmad both opined that it was an obligation every time his name is mentioned; the final opinion they held before they passed away.
