Tafseer: Pardon and Be Merciful

Allaah, the Most High, says:

وَلْيَعْفُوا وَلْيَصْفَحُوا أَلَا تُحِبُّونَ أَنْ يَغْفِرَ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ

"Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." [Surah an-Noor 24:22]

Imaam Abu Ja'faar, Ibn Jareer at-Tabaree [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said in his Tafseer:
"Meaning, do you not want that Allaah conceals your sins so that it doesn’t get the better of you and that you are not punished because of them?

Allaah is al-Ghafoor towards the sins of the one who obeys Him and follows His Commands.

He is ar-Raheem towards them because He doesn’t Punish them because they follow His Commands and that they obey Him. They only obey Him Alone however the slave sometimes slips up and disobeys, but in this case, he is repentant if he lapses. So the repentance is accepted for someone who has these traits."

[Tafseer at-Tabaree 19/136]

Al-Allaamah Tahir bin 'Aashoor [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said:
"Meaning, He will Pardon and be Merciful to you if you are pardoning and merciful to those wrong you.

He is 'al-Ghafoor, ar-Raheem', meaning He is plentiful in Forgiving and having Mercy to His slaves, despite them disobeying Him abundantly. So how can a slave follow the path to seek the Pardoning and Mercy of their Lord with the sins that they do?"
[At-Tahreer wa at-Tanweer (19/189)]
