Chapter: Explanation of Characteristics of an-Nifaaq

It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. 'Amr that the Prophet observed:
"There are four characteristics, whoever has them all is a pure hypocrite, and whoever has one of its characteristics, he has one of the characteristics of hypocrisy, until he gives it up: When he speaks he lies, when he makes a covenant he betrays it, when he makes a promise he breaks it, and when he disputes he resorts to obscene speech." In the narration of Sufyan (one of the narrators) it is: "And if he has one of them, he has one of the characteristics of hypocrisy."

Explanation
-Nawawi affirms that it's possible that a person has Emaan and aspects of Nifaaq also.
-These characteristic don't mean that a person is a Munaafiq and will be in the fire forever, rather the Hadeeth means that such characteristics mean a person is sinning and is resembling them, Tirmidhee explained this as being Nifaaq al-Amal.
-Some of the Salaf such as Ibn Junaid, Ata, Hasan as well as Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar that the characteristics mentioned here are examples of Nifaaq at the time of the Prophet.

Sharh Muslim 2/54-57
