Tafseer: “as it was prescribed for those before you”

O you who believe! Observing As-Saum (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2).” [al-Baqarah 2:183]

Imaam as-Sa’dee [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

Allaah, the Most High, has Honoured the slave with fasting. Obligating the fasting of Ramadhaan replicates the same obligation that was upon the nations before us; this is because all commands found in the Sharee’ah are of profound benefit. This is irrespective of time and place. So for this Ummah, the obligation of fasting is a great opportunity. It allows us to compete with the nations before us in order for our deeds to be perfected and be even more fruitful in reward. End quote.
