The Heat and Cold are from the Breathes of the Hellfire

It is narrated in al-Bukhaaree and Muslim on the authority of Aboo Hurayrah [May Allaah be Pleased with him] that the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “The Hellfire complained to its lord and she said, “Parts of me are eating others parts of me.” So Allaah Permitted that it can have two times to breath during the year, once in winter and again in summer. When it releases its breath it causes the weather to become extremely hot and it causes the weather to become extremely cold.”

In another narration, “The bitter coldness you experience is the breathe that comes from the depth of the coldness of the Hellfire. And the extreme heat you experience is from the breathes that come from the heat-filled pits of the Hellfire.”
[Saheeh Muslim and Ibn Maajah with a similar wording]

Haafidh Ibn ‘Abdul-Barr [May Allaah have Mercy on him] stated in at-Tamheed:

The Fire is permitted to have two times to breathe (or sighs as it occurs in other narrations), once in summer and again in winter. This is proof that the breath that comes from the Fire is something different to weather one experiences in summer and winter (i.e. there is a time during these seasons that the temperature one feels has nothing to do with the weather, rather it is from the fire directly). And there are narrations from the companions which add to the narrations that come in this regard; the temperature one feels in the extreme cold is from the depths of the coldness of the Fire and the heat on feels when it is extremely hot is from the pits of the Fire.

However, even this is not taken in its apparent. It is narrated that Hasan al-Basree said in explaining this, “The Fire complained to her Lord and said, “Part of me is eating other parts, so relieve me.” So Allaah gave her relief by allowing her to breathe twice. So the extreme coldness of the fire kills whatever it touches and whatever emanates from the pits of the fire kills whatever it reaches.” End quote.

Imaam as-Suyootee said in explaining what is stated above in at-Tamheed:

Ibn at-Teen said, “Someone may ask, how can the Fire have both coldness and heat? The answer is that the Fire has parts of that is pure fire and others parts that are extremely cold. So it is not the case that the heat and coldness comes from one place.” End quote.

Ar-Ra’ad Praises it’s Lord Out of Fear for Him

12. It is He who shows you the lightning, as a fear (for travellers) and as a hope (for those who wait for rain). And it is He Who brings up (or originates) the clouds, heavy (with water).

13. And Ar-Ra'd (thunder) glorifies and praises Him, and so do the angels because of His Awe, He sends the thunderbolts, and therewith He strikes whom He wills, yet they (disbelievers) dispute about Allah. And He is Mighty in strength and Severe in punishment.

[ar-Ra’ad 13:12-13]

Imaam al-Hussayn bin Mas’ood al-Baghawee said in his Tafseer:

12. It is He who shows you the lightning, as a fear (for travellers) and as a hope (for those who wait for rain). And it is He Who brings up (or originates) the clouds, heavy (with water): meaning, one fears from the thunder but has hope that some good will come from the rain.

It has also been explained to mean that the traveler fears from the thunder because of the difficulty it may cause however at the same time, he has hope in the blessings and benefit that the rain will bring.

13. And Ar-Ra'd (thunder) glorifies and praises Him, and so do the angels because of His Awe…: Most of the Mufassireen said that the name of the Angel appointed over the clouds is called ar-Ra’ad (others said ar-Ra'ad refers to the thunder and not the angel). His voice can be heard (when it thunders) when he makes Tasbeeh (i.e. saying Subhaan Allaah).

Ibn ‘Abbaas said whoever hears the thunder should say:

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي يُسَبِّح الرَّعْد بِحَمْدِهِ , وَالْمَلَائِكَة مِنْ خِيفَته وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

"Glory be to the One Who is Glorified by ar-Ra’ad (the angel or the thunder itself) and the Angels because of their fear of Him, and He is Able to do all things.

If one says this when it thunders and something happens to him then he is free from any expiation (i.e. not blameworthy)."

‘Abdallah bin Zubayr said, “If one hears the sound of ar-Ra’ad then he should stop talking and say:

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي يُسَبِّح الرَّعْد بِحَمْدِهِ , وَالْمَلَائِكَة مِنْ خِيفَته

And he also said, “The thunder is a great warning for the people of earth”

Other narrations state that Allaah, the Most High, said, “If my servant Obeyed me I would have given them rain during the night and I would have made the sun to rise during the day and they would never hear the sound of thunder”.

Ibn ‘Abbaas, ad-Dhahaak and Juwaybir stated that the angel of the clouds is ar-Ra’ad, and he alternates the clouds in a manner that he is ordered to. The water in the oceans and the seas are under his control. He glorifies Allaah, the Most High, and when he does so, there is not an angel in the skies except that they raise their voice in doing Tasbeeh. Once they perform the Tasbeeh thereafter it begins to rain.

…and so do the angels because of His Awe…: the angels glorify Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted, from their fear in him. It is also stated that it means that the angels assist the angel ar-Ra’ad. Allaah, the Most High, has made them to assist each other, all of them fearing him, submissive and obedient to him.

…He sends the thunderbolts, and therewith He strikes whom He wills, yet they (disbelievers) dispute about Allah. And He is Mighty in strength and Severe in punishment. :Meaning, He sends down thunderbolts as a form of punishment and it burns and afflicts whomever He Wills. Muhammad bin ‘Alee al-Baaqir said that it is possible that it afflicts the Muslim and the non-Muslim however those who remember Allaah, the Most High, will not be harmed.

"...And He is Mighty in strength and Severe in punishment.": 'Alee ibn Abee Taalib [May Alllaah be Pleased with him] said it means He is Severe when he Grasps in punishment.

Ibn 'Abbaas [May Alllaah be Pleased with him] said it means He is extremely Powerful.

Hasan al-Basree [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said it means he is sterm in his retribution.

Mujaahid [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said it means He is extremely Powerful.

The Parable of the Hypocrites, Thunder and Lightning

17. Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindled a fire; then, when it lighted all around him, Allah took away their light and left them in darkness. (So) they could not see.

18. They are deaf, dumb, and blind, so they return not (to the Right Path).

19. Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder, and lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunderclap for fear of death. But Allah ever encompasses the disbelievers (i.e. Allah will gather them all together).

20. The lightning almost snatches away their sight, whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stand still. And if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Certainly, Allah has power over all things.

[al-Baqarah 2:17-20]

Al-‘Allaamah Taahir bin ‘Aashoor [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said in his Tafseer:

17. Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindled a fire; then, when it lighted all around him…: The parable given of them (the hypocrites) is like they are kindling a fire, meaning having light and it being taken away from him. Without light one is left in darkness, so the meaning here is that they have no clarity in their lives so they have been left in the darkness of what they chose, the lack of guidance.

…Allah took away their light and left them in darkness. (So) they could not see…: Allaah took away their light; meaning, they (hypocrites) kindled a fire but the benefit behind kindling the fire was not achieved, thus they were left without fulfilling any objective. However, they had only been left with their sense of hearing because Allaah took away their sense of ability to see, meaning they were able to hear the truth and its explanation but they didn’t intend to be guided, so they were left in the darkness of their misguidance and thus blinded to the truth.

18. They are deaf, dumb, and blind, so they return not (to the Right Path): They (the hypocrites) have been described as being deaf because their sense of hearing doesn’t benefit them as the purpose of hearing given to mankind has not been fulfilled. They have been described as dumb because their ability to speak has not been actualised. They have been described as being blind because they have no insight.

…They will not return…: meaning they will not return or leave these three negative characteristics, being deaf, dumb and blind. They have not gain understanding nor have they been guided to what is correct by utilising these three characteristics.

19. Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder, and lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunderclap for fear of death. But Allah ever encompasses the disbelievers (i.e. Allah will gather them all together) : this is connected to the simile given before about the kindling of the fire. Meaning, they have the ability to hear the Quraan and its guidance but they chose not to benefit from it, rather they seek to ridicule it and those who follow it.

As a result, they are like those who have rain poured onto them, and this simile refers to the Quraan and its guidance. It is being poured onto them however they chose to be in darkness and a state of fear, the simile given here is darkness, thunder and lighting. They are like those who are lost in their ways, because those who are safe from darkness, thunder and lightning are those who are safe in their homes, however these people who reject it resemble those who are homeless and left exposed to darkness, thunder and lightning.

Therefore, these Aayat describe the state of the believers, those who are safe because they possess the characteristics needed for them to be safe. And it is describes the hypocrites and the characteristics they possess so that one can realise and deceiver who they are and the situation they are in.

20. The lightning almost snatches away their sight…: Referring to what has been stated before, their characteristics when the Quraan and its guidance is being revealed. It can also refer to their state of fear of punishment and being exposed for their hypocrisy when it thunders.

…whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stand still… : Meaning, their characteristics and situation never changes. Either they are scared when it thunders or they are scared when the light of thunder goes away and they are left in darkness. They are constantly in the state of fear (from being founded out and being punished in the Dunyaa), when they hear the thunder they fear they are going to die but when the thunder clears they are left blinded in their darkness.

…And if Allah willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Certainly, Allah has power over all things…: Meaning, if Allaah Willed He could have guided them but they (the hypocrites) chose to remain in their misguidance.

This is because they preferred to close their ears with their fingers when the guidance was sent and recited to them.

The benefit behind this parable is the fact that the hypocrites live in a state of doubt, they don’t benefit from their senses of hearing and seeing, thus the truth is averted from them.

Khutbah: Virtues of Winter

Khutbah delivered by Shaykh Sa'd bin Naasir ash-Shithree [May Allaah Preserve him]
18/1/1432 - 24/12/2010
Praise be to Allaah Who guided us to the religion of Islaam, He Legislated for us rulings which are appropriate for the creation and that which bring betterment for their lives. He made every situation that a person has, a ruling from His Shariah connected to it, so that he is organised.
I Praise Him, Glorified He is, and I show admiration to Him, I thank Him, The Glorified and The Exalted. I bear witness that there is no God worthy of Worship except Allaah, alone with no partners and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger, May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him, and on his family, his companions and all those who follow him, and I ask for peace to be multiplied upon him in an abundance.
To Proceed:
Oh Believers, fear Allaah! Use your time with that which will bring you close to Allaah. Fear Allaah and make yourselves from the people of Jannah, by making your deeds righteous.
Oh Believers! These days are the days of winter. It has been narrated in some the narrations that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said,
“Winter is a time of spring for the believer, the days are short so he fasts, and the nights are long so he stands.”
[Aboo Na’eem in Hilya al-Awliyaa (8/364); Ibn ‘Adee in Lisaan al-Meezaan (5/118) with an Mashoor Isnaad; Haythamee in Majmaa az-Zawaaid (3/203) with a Hasan Isnaad; Zarqaanee in Mukhtasar al-Maqaasid (Pg. 553) with a Hasan Isnaad; ‘Ajloonee in Kashf al-Khafaa (2/6) with supporting Isnaads]
In another narration;
“Winter is a cold treasure”
[Narrated by Ahmad (4/335); at-Tirmidhee (794); Ibn Khuzaymah (3/309) Classified Hasan by al-Albaanee in Saheeh al-Jaami’ as-Sagheer (3868)]
Based on this, we must know some of the rulings connected to winter and the benefits that the Shariah has given us so that we may benefit from what Allaah has Decreed upon us in this season of winter.
Therefore, we must ponder on the Power and Ability of Allaah, the Lord of all theAalameen, The Glorified and The Exalted. He, Perfect He is, has made for people a saviour from the heat and then he makes a saviour for them from the cold. Look at His Ability upon His creation, how He is able to change and bring opposites. Heat and cold, likewise, this pattern is replicated throughout your life. Allaah, The Glorified and The Exalted, has created everything in opposites, thus showing the Power and Ability of Allaah. He created the night and the day, health and sickness, the sun and the moon and the examples of Allaah, The Glorified and The Exalted, in opposites continue.
From the benefits of Allaah, The Glorified and The Exalted, Decreeing upon His slaves the season of winter, is the benefit it brings to your bodies. The summer is a season which expels discharge from your body whereas the winter strengthens and restores your body. Likewise, from the benefits of Allaah Decreeing winter upon His slaves, so that we remember the Hellfire. This is because the Hellfire is able to have blazing heat and bitter cold, the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said,
“Hellfire complained to its Lord, saying, 'O my Lord, my different parts are eating each other up.’ So Allaah allowed it to take two breaths – one in the winter and the other in the summer. This is cause of the severe heat we feel in the summer and the bitter cold you experience in the winter.’” [Al-Bukhaaree (3087) and Muslim (617)]
Likewise, good deeds are made easy for us during this season. From the things that have been made easy is fasting. The days are short and cold, so a person finds it easier to fast, without any real struggle or difficulty. The virtues of fasting have been narrated in many narrations. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said,
"Whoever fasts a day for the sake of Allaah, Allaah will distance his face from the fire with the measurement of seventy generations." [Al-Bukhaaree (2840) and Muslim (1153)]
From the good deeds ones can do in this season and that which has been easy for him, is for him to pray during the night. The nights are long, so it is possible for one to pray at great length during the night and still be able to sleep well. So one should program himself during these winter days so that he is able to perform these prayers during the night, this will also train him and give him the ability to stand throughout the year. Allaah, the Most High, says about the believers;
"Their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend (charity in Allah's Cause) out of what We have bestowed on them"
[as-Sajdah 32:16]
He says
"They used to sleep but little by night [invoking their Lord (Allah) and praying, with fear and hope] "
[adh-Dhaariyaat 51:17]
From the good deeds that have been made easy for people during these days, to wait for a Salaah after one of the Salah has fisnished. If one prays and remains sitting waiting for the next prayer to begin then he is till in the state of prayer. It has been narrated in a hadeeth that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him]
“Shall I not tell you of something by means of which Allaah erases sins and raises you in status?” They said: “Yes, O Messenger of Allaah.” He said: “Doing wudoo’ well even when it is difficult, taking many steps to the mosques and waiting for prayer after prayer. That is (equivalent) to guarding the frontier.” [Muslim (251)]
The time between Dhuhr and ‘Asr is short, the time between ‘Asr and Maghrib is short, the time between Maghrib and ‘Isha is short, so if one waits prays and remains sitting, then it will have a abundant reward written for him.
The evidences that have proceeded have mentioned another act of worship that we can do during the winter, this is to do Wudhoo and doing this with difficulty. So if you do your Wudhoo and you accomplish this with difficulty, your reward will be greater.
Other acts of righteousness that one can do during the winter days, is for the believer to get closer to Allaah. This can be done via him being grateful for the covering of his body for the devices that heat him. If one is afflicted with any of the diseases that usually get passed around during this season, and he remains patient, then this will be a cause of reward for the slave. And Allaah, the Most High, has said;
"And Allah has made for you in your homes an abode, and made for you out of the hides of the cattle (tents for) dwelling, which you find so light (and handy) when you travel and when you stay (in your travels), and of their wool, fur, and hair (sheep wool, camel fur, and goat hair), a furnishing and articles of convenience (e.g. carpets, blankets, etc.), a comfort for a while."
[Nahl 16:80]
For the good deeds one can do in winter is to get closer to your Lord by donating clothes to the poor and needy. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said;
"Whoever clothes a naked believer, then Allaah will cloth him with the green clothes of Jannah." [at-Tirmidhee (2449); Ahmad (11116) and others]
In another narration:
"From the clothes of Jannah"
[at-Taghreeb at-Tahreeb (2/92)]
From the righteous deeds one can do in these virtuous winter days is for the person to remember and ponder on the days that go by. How many winters have you been through in your life? How many days and years have passed you? Your life is lived, your days are passed and your life is fading away. Therefore, it is upon for you to be intelligent, to remember the hereafter and prepare for it by doing good and righteous deeds. Increase in good deeds, repent to him and seek his forgiveness;
"And be afraid of the Day when you shall be brought back to Allah. Then every person shall be paid what he earned, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly."
[Baqarah 2:281]
The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said,
There is not a person except that his Lord will talk to him and there will be no interpreter between them. So the man will look on his right and he will see what he did, he will look to for a way out and he will only see what he did. He will look in front of him and he will see the fire, so fear Allaah! Even if it is with a part of a date! [Al-Bukhaaree (7005) and Muslim (1016)]
The meaning of part of a date, it means half a date. Look! Half a date can save a slave from the punishments of the fire, therefore then free yourself even if it is with something small.
Verily, from the things we should remember in our time during the winter, is to remember the story of Maryam [Peace be upon her]. She was in her designated place of worship, when Zakariyyah went into her....
"So her Lord (Allah) accepted her with goodly acceptance. He made her grow in a good manner and put her under the care of Zakariya (Zachariya). Every time he entered Al-Mihrab to (visit) her , he found her supplied with sustenance. He said: "O Maryam (Mary)! From where have you got this?" She said, "This is from Allah." Verily, Allah provides sustenance to whom He wills, without limit."
[Aal-Imraan 3:37]
When he would go to her in the winter days, he would find with her fruits that only harvest in the summer. If he would go into her Mihrab in the summer, he would find fruits that would only grow in winter. These were causes for Zakariyyah to be marvelled and he supplicated to Allaah for him to be granted a son, even though he was old in his age, his wife equally old and on top of this, she was barren.
It is as if he was saying, 'If Allaah provided Maryam with the fruits of winter in the summer, and the fruits of summer in the winter, fruits in their untimely times, then it is more likely that Allaah will give me a child in an untimely time, i.e in my old age.' So it if upon you to ponder and ask Allaah, The Glorified and The Exalted, for all your affairs and that He will respond and fulfil your needs. He will realise your needs and these can be a cause for you to gain assistance and happiness in the Dunyaa and Aakhira
I seek refuge in Allaah from the out casted Shaytan.
"And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright."
[Baqarah 2:186]
May Allaah bless me and you with the Noble Quraan, benefit us from the Ayaat and the wise remembrance that are within it. This is what I have to say, I seek forgiveness from Allaah, Al-'Alee, al-'Atheem, for myself and you and all the Muslims from all our sins, so seek forgiveness in him, he is al-Ghafoor, ar-Raheem.

Tawbah was Accepted on the Day of ‘Aashooraa

From the virtues of the Day of ‘Aashooraa is that it is narrated that it is the day in which Allaah Accepted the Tawbah of people.

It is narrated in at-Tirmidhee that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “If you were to fast a month after Ramadhaan then fast (most of) al-Muharram, because in it is when Allaah Accepted the Tawbah of people.”

It is narrated that ‘Alee bin Abee Taalib [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said, “It is the day when Allaah Forgave the people of Yoonus.”

It is narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said, “It is the day in which the repentance of Aadam was Accepted after he was expelled from Jannah.”

It is narrated that ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul-‘Azeez (another from the Salaf) [May Allaah have Mercy on him] wrote to a people and said, “Say as your father Aadam [Peace be upon him] said:

“Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers” [‘Araaf  7:23]

And say as Nooh [Peace be upon him] said:

“O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have Mercy on me, I would indeed be one of the losers” [Hood 11:47]

And say as Moosaa [Peace be upon him] said:

“My Lord! Verily, I have wronged myself, so forgive me” [Qasas 28:16]

And say as Dhu an-Noon [Peace be upon him] said:

“…he cried through the darkness (saying): La ilaha illa Anta [none has the right to be worshipped but You (O Allah)], Glorified (and Exalted) are You [above all that (evil) they associate with You]. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers.” [an-Anbiyaa’ 21:87]

Wahb (another from the Salaf) [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said, “Truly, Allaah, the Most High, revealed onto Moosaa [Peace be upon him] that his nation. They were told to seek Tawbah in the first ten days and on the tenth day they were forgiven.”

‘Ikrimah (another from the Salaf) [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said, “The tenth is the day in which Allaah Forgave Aadam.”

Qataadah (another from the Salaf) [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said, “We used to narrate to others that this is the day in which Aadam repented.”

So it is encouraged for us to increase in making Tawbah on the day of ‘Aashooraa, seeking for it to be Accepted, because the one who has his Tawbah from his bad deeds Accepted from Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted, then it will be as this person is turning to Allaah like those before did.

The one repenting realises his sin and he combines this with regret, then his Tawbah will be accepted. Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted, says:

“And (there are) others who have acknowledged their sins, they have mixed a deed that was righteous with another that was evil. Perhaps Allah will turn unto them in forgiveness. Surely, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful .” [at-Tawbah 9:102]

The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “If a slave realises his sin and repents then Allaah will Turn to him (i.e. accept his repentance).”
Also, it is related that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] used to open his prayer by supplicated, “Oh Allaah! You are my Lord, there is no God but You. I have wrong myself and I recognise my sins, so Forgive me, surely there is none that forgives sins except You.”

So when Aadam was dispelled from Jannah and landed on earth, he wept because he longed to go back to Jannah. It is narrated that he was in the state of regret and wept for three hundred years. He lived in a place where there was no hunger, no starvation, no thirst, no tiredness and no loss; but because of his sin he was dispelled from such a land to a place where he experienced these negative feelings.

Prohibition on Venerating the Day of ‘Aashooraa

It is narrated from (the Salaf like) Qataadah that he said, “”Aashooraa was a day of beautification, it was a day in which there is joy, because Allaah saved Moosaa from Fir’awn.”

It is also narrated that Moosaa [Peace be upon him] would wear his best clothes and he would apply Kohl in his eyes (i.e. for the purpose of beautification).

The Jews at the time of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] from the people of al-Madeenah and the people of Khaybar (a Jewish villiage in the time of the Prophet) used to venerate this day and they used to take this day as a day of ‘Eid. They used to wear their best clothes and their women used their wear jewellery. The Murshriks of Makkah imitated the Jews in this and took it as practice to use this day to change the cloth of the Ka’bah.

However, our Sharee’ah is different to theirs and we have been ordered to be different from them. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Fast on this day (i.e. be different to them and don’t take this as a day of ‘Eid)”. It is also narrated in Nasaa’ee and Ibn Hibbaan with a different wording, “So you should fast in order to be different to them.”

All of this proves that we are prohibited from taking this day as a day of veneration and in order for it not to be an ‘Eid for us, we should fast (i.e. because in our Sharee’ah, fasting on ‘Eid is prohibited).

It is narrated from Umm Salamah [May Allaah be Pleased with her] that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] used to fast Sunday as well as Saturday in order for us to be different from the Jews, because the Jews take Saturday as a day of fasting.

He [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] used to say, “Verily, this is a day in which they have taken as an ‘Eid, so I like to be different to them.”

So it was from the ways of the Jews and the Christians to single out fasting the day they venerate.

All the narrations that have been narrated about one having a bath especially for this day and that one should wear their best clothes and apply Khol, are all fabricated and they are not correct.

As for giving as-Sadaqah on this day then it was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr [May Allaah be Pleased with him] that he said, “Whoever fasts the day of ‘Aashooraa then it is as if he has fasted a whole year, and the one who gives in as-Sadaqah then it is as if he has given Sadaqah for the whole year.”

Virtues of Fasting The Day of ‘Aashoora and its Rulings.

It is narrated in the two Saheehs that Ibn ‘Abbaas [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said that he never saw the Messenger [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] more eager to fast than this day ( meaning the Day of ‘Aashoraa).

The Day of ‘Aashoora has a great virtue, an ancient sacredness and fasting it was the practice of the Prophets [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon them all. Both Nooh and Moosaa fasted it and the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “The Day of ‘Aashoora was the day in which the Prophets fasted, so you should fast them” [Narrated by Mukhlid in his Musnad].

It was also a day in which the People of the Book and the Mushriks of Quraysh fasted.
When the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] asked the Jews after migrating to al-Madeenah, “What is this day that you are fasting?” They replied by saying, “This is a great day, it is the day in which Allaah saved Moosaa and his people and drowned Fir’awn and his people. So Moosaa fasted this day out of thanks and so do we.” The Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] then responded to them when he said, “We have more right to Moosaa than you.” So the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] fasted it and he ordered his Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them all] to fast it also. This was narrated in al-Bukhaaree and Muslim.

In another narration that was collected by Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad, extra wording appears; “It is the day in which Allaah saved Moosaa and Banee Israa’el from drowning and caused Fir’awn and his people to be drowned instead. It is the day when the ark of Nooh settled on Mount Joodee (i.e. the day the flood of the people of Nooh ended), so both Nooh and Moosa [Peace be Upon them both] fasted this day, in thanks to Allaah, the Glorofied and the Exalted. ”

Imaam Aboo Haneefah and what appaers to be the correct view from Imaam Ahmad is that fasting this day, before the obligation of fasting Ramadhaan, was obligatory.

The majority of the Shaafi’ees stated that it was never obligatory and it was always a stressed recommendation to fast this day. However now, after the obligation of fasting Ramadhaan, the scholars differed: some said that fasting ‘Aashooraa has been abrogated in its ruling but others stating that it is recommended.

(Some of the Salaf stated this). Qays bin Sa’d said, “We act upon it (i.e. still fast the day of ‘Aashooraa)”.

It is narrated that Ibn Mas’ood and Ibn ‘Umar [May Allaah be Pleased with them both] both stated that it is not recommended anymore.

It is also narrated that Sa’eed bin Mussyab [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said about its abrogation, “The Messenger of Allaah never fasted it.” A similar statement was narrated by Sa’d bin Abee Waqaas [May Allaah be Pleased with him].

But the majority of the scholars uphold the ruling that it is Mustahab (highly recommended). This was narrated to be the view of ‘Umar, ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin  ‘Awf, Aboo Moosaa al-‘Asharee, Qays bin Sa’eed, Ibn ‘Abbaas and others from the companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them all].

Ibn ‘Abbaas [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said about fasting ‘Aashooraa, “I never saw the Messenger of Allaah more eager to fast, after Ramadhaan, than the day of ‘Aashooraa.”
It is also narrated that the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “I hope with Allaah that is expiates the sins of the previous year.”

It is also narrated that the mother of the believers, Hafsah bin ‘Umar bin al-Khattaab [May Allaah be Pleased with her] said, “The Prophet never left fasting the day of ‘Aashooraa, the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah and three days of every month.” [Narrated by Aboo Dawood].

It is narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas used to fast this day even whilst travelling and that he used to fast the ninth and the tenth, fearing that he may miss the tenth.

It is also narrated (others from the Salaf) that Ibn Ishaaq used to fast the day of ‘Aashooraa, the day before it and a day after it (i.e. 9th, 10th and 11th) and he said about it, “I fear that I might miss it”.

It is also narrated that Ibn Sireen used to fast all three days.

It is narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas and ad-Dahaak used to fast the ninth and the tenth.

It is narrated that Aboo Haneefah, ash-Shaafi’ee and Ahmad all recommended the fasting of the ninth and the tenth.

Ahl as-Sunnah Free their Tongues and their Hearts from Seeking Faults in the Companions

Shaykh ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin Naasir al-Barraack [May Allaah Preserve him]
Former Teacher at Imaam Muhammad bin Sa’ood University
Seerah Khulafaa Sayyid al-Mursaleen Conference
Prince Faisal bin Fahad Masjid, ar-Riyadh
9/11/1433 - 25/9/2012

The Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with him] have characteristics. Some of them were either:

Muhaajiroon; this is the characteristics of them leaving everything they had for the sake of their religion.

Or

Ansaar; this the characteristics  of them helping the Messenger [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon them] and supporting him

(And there is also a share in this booty) for the poor emigrants, who were expelled from their homes and their property, seeking Bounties from Allah and to please Him. And helping Allah (i.e. helping His religion) and His Messenger (Muhammad). Such are indeed the truthful (to what they say);-

And those who, before them, had homes (in Al-Madinah) and had adopted the Faith, love those who emigrate to them, and have no jealousy in their breasts for that which they have been given (from the booty of Bani An-Nadir), and give them (emigrants) preference over themselves, even though they were in need of that. And whosoever is saved from his own covetousness, such are they who will be the successful.” [Surah al-Hashr 59: 8-9]

Therefore these two supported each other and they supported the cause of The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] until the day of the Fath (i.e. the opening of Makkah) came when The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “There is no Hijrah after the Fath but there remains Jihaad and the intention.”

This doesn’t mean that there is no Hijrah, rather Hijrah will continue until the Last Day. Hijrah is to leave the land of the non-Muslims to the land of Islaam, this remains for those who are able. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] stated that Hijrah will not stop until Tawbah stops and Tawbah will stop when the sun rises from the west.

Then Allah, the Most High, says:

“And those who came after them say: "Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith, and put not in our hearts any hatred against those who have believed. Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful.” [Surah al-Hashr 59: 10]

This means, all those who come after the Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them all] should make Dua’a for them, and then those after them make Dua’a for them and the Tabee’een [May Allaah be Pleased with them all], and so on and so on.

Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said in his book ‘Aqeedah al-Waasitiyyah that, “Ahl as-Sunnah have a principle which is that they free their tongues and their hearts from seeking faults in the Companions.”

So we give them their rank and we hate those who hate them and we don’t mention them unless it be with good [May Allaah be Pleased with them all].

It is also in our ‘Aqeedah for us to be balanced in our love for the Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them all]. We don’t hate them like Khwaarij (extremists, renegades) do and we don’t excessively love them like Raafidah do. The Raafidah hate them the most but they are extreme in their love for Ahl al-Bayt and they hold them to be infallible. The opposite to them are the Khwaarij, they hate Ahl al-Bayt, rather they do Takfeer on them (i.e. declare them to be Kuffaar) and they even fought some of them[1]. However, Ahl as-Sunnah are in between, we love them and don’t say anything bad about them and we place them in their place

[1] Both of these sects use Muharram and the historical events that happened within them to practice their innovation. The extreme hatred of a sect called the Naasibee has led them to hold the day that Hussayn died as a day of 'Eid. The polar opposite of the Naasibee's are the Raafidah/Shee'ah, who innovated the practice of worshipping Hassan and Hussein and others from Ahl al-Bayt during these days. This sect may be better known as the 'Alawees. See: Minhaaj al-Sunnah (4/554) and Iqtida’ al-Siraat al-Mustaqeem (p. 300, 301) for further information.
