Mother's Day: We Honour our Mothers Every Day

On the authority of Aboo Hurayrah [May Allaah be Pleased with him] who said that the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] was approached by a man and he asked him, “Who has most right over me?” He replied, “Your mother”. He then asked, “Then who?” He replied, “Your mother”. He then asked, “Then who?” He replied, “Your mother”. He then asked, “Then who?” He replied, “Your father.”

[Narrated by Bukhaaree (5514) Muslim (4621)]

Haafidh Ibn Hajar [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said about this Hadeeth;

The reason why you mother has been given a threefold virtue over your father is because of the difficulty she went through with you. She carried you, then she gave birth to you and then she breastfed you. These difficulties no one else can go through for your sake except your mother. After these three factors are taken out, then and only then can the father be equal to the mother. This is also indicated in the statement of Allaah, the Most High;

And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination

[Luqmaan 31:14]

So they have been made equal in the command to obey them however the mother has been made special by three factors. Qurtubee said, “The meaning of this is that the mother has more right for the child to obey him.” Al-‘Ayyaad said, “The majority of scholars say that the mother has more right for you to obey than your father.”

[Fath al-Baaree (10/402)]

Shaykh Abdul-Azeez bin Baaz [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said;

Some people have begun to copy the west by having a day in the year where they celebrate their mothers. However Islamic law dictates that we honour our mothers every day and all the time and there is no need to customise a special day in the year to honour her.
