Questions 26

Questions asked to Shaykh Saaleh bin Fawzaan bin Abdullah al-Fawzaan [May Allaah Preserve him]

After his explanation of the Book Zaad al-Ma'aad
05/04/1433 - 26/02/2012

Question: Are all the Ahaadeeth that mention that the camels are created from the Jinn, weak?
Answer: I don’t know about this. However, they say that the camels are mixed with the Jinns because they move faster and that they distract people from Salaah, they are strong and are their hearts are stronger than that of sheep. Sheep are gentler whereas camels are harsher.

Question: What is the status of the Hadeeth that states that the camels are from Shaytaan?
Answer: I don’t remember of any statement of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] stating this.

[TN: Perhaps the questioner is referring to the hadeeth; “Verily, the camel has been created from Shayaateen and behind every camel there is a Shaytan” (Aboo Dawood, 493; Ibn Maajah, 769; Ahmad, 20541; Shaykh Al-Albaanee said it is Saheeh in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1579)
Shaykh al-Islaam said, “The meaning, Allaah Knows best, they are like Shaytan meaning they can be insolent like Shaytan are, but this isn’t exclusive to camels but all of the creation can be affected by Shaytan” (Sharh al-Umdah, 1/185)]

Question: Is the Hadeeth which states that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] consulting his wife Umm Salamah [May Allaah be Pleased with her] a proof to suggest that we can consult our wives in decisions we may need to make?
Answer: There is no doubt in this, women have an opinion also. So we should consult them. Yes, the man is generally responsible but consulting them is something good.

Question: What is the ruling on cutting the hair that is on your legs and arms?
Answer: There is nothing wrong with this, to remove the hair on your body is permissible. Removing the hair under your armpits and private parts is Sunnah, otherwise its permissible.

Question: Is it permissible for a man to wear gloves in Salaat?
Answer: What’s the problem with this? Espcially if there is a need for it.

Question: Is there an explanation of Zaad al-Ma’aad
Answer: It doesn’t need an explanation. The text is clear, it gives you the understanding and lessons from the Seerah.

Question: Is Salaat Istisqaa to be prayed on Mondays only or can it be prayed on day during the week?
Answer:  You pray it when there is a need, there is no fixed day for you to pray it on or a fixed month or a fixed season, you pray it when there is a need.

Question: Is it permissible for us to combine prayers due to a sandstorm?
Answer: No, this is not known from the Salaf or the scholars up until today. I have not heard of any scholar combine prayers due to a sandstorm. I have seen sandstorms become so severe that it covers the sky and we are not able to see in front of us, despite this I haven’t seen any scholar say we should combine. This is because, Salaat is fixed in times and we are not allowed to play with them. They have been legislated in our Shariah to pray at these times, so we can’t change them unless we have solid evidence to do so.

Question: Can the Qunoot an-Nawaazil be prayed in Fajr Prayers or can it be included in all the five prayers?
Answer: All the prayers, you can do Qunoot in all of them.

Question: Is the red wind from the signs of the Hour?
Answer: I don’t know anything about this.

Question: Is it permissible to urinate in a graveyard?
Answer: It is not permissible to disrespect the deceased, it is not permissible for us to mix the water that may flow into their graves and the like, the sanctuary that exists for those alive apply to the deceased as well. Thus, it is not permissible to sit on their graves or relieve ourselves on their graves, or to walk on their graves. All of this is not permissible as it disrespects the graves.

Question: What is the ruling on passing wind in the masjid?
Answer: There is nothing wrong with this; it isn’t impure in itself so it doesn’t make the masjid impure.

Question:  The texts that talk about the Khwaarij in a harsh manner, does this mean that they are outside of Islaam?
Answer: The scholar’s differed, some said they are not Muslim and others said they are. They considered them as being sinful Muslims; perhaps they are included in this.

Question: Some people when before doing Sujood, they place a part of their scarf to do Sujood on it, is this act OK?
Answer: If they do this with a need then there is no harm in it. If there is not need, then it is Makrooh. The Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with him] would pray Dhuhr and if the heat was severe, they would place a part of their turbans on the floor and they would do Sujood on this piece of cloth from their turban. So fi there is a need, then there is no problem.

Question: Can we immediately say that the person who has done an act of Kufr as a Kaafir?
Answer: No it is necessary that we investigate; some people are ignorant, some have reasons. So we need to investiaget first.

Question: Was the recitation of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] praying Surah ash-Shams in Fajr prayer in the time of residence or whilst he was travelling?
Answer: Surah Shams? I don’t know. Whatever comes after Surah Naba’a then these are considered as short Surahs, whatever is before then they are considered the longer of the Mufassal Surahs. The Mufassal is split from longer, to medium to shorter Surahs. The longer ones are from Surah Qaaf to Naba’a. The medium are from Naaziyaat to Duhaa. The shorter are from Duha to Naas.

Question: Is it permissible to connect supplication to the will of Allaah (i.e. by doing Dua’a and then saying If Allaah Wills or Inshallah after it instead of saying Ameen)
Answer: This is not permissible. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “No one of you should say, ‘O Allaah, forgive me if You wish, O Allaah, have mercy on me if You wish’; he should be firm in his asking, for Allaah cannot be compelled.” [Narrated by al-Bukhaari (6339) and Muslim (2679)] [i.e. not to supplicate and say Inshallah after it] This is because we should doubt that Allaah will do it if He Wills, we know this already but we are asking him, this is from one aspect. Another aspect is that we supplicate by wanting something, if we say if you will then it is as if it’s not important.

Mother's Day: We Honour our Mothers Every Day

On the authority of Aboo Hurayrah [May Allaah be Pleased with him] who said that the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] was approached by a man and he asked him, “Who has most right over me?” He replied, “Your mother”. He then asked, “Then who?” He replied, “Your mother”. He then asked, “Then who?” He replied, “Your mother”. He then asked, “Then who?” He replied, “Your father.”

[Narrated by Bukhaaree (5514) Muslim (4621)]

Haafidh Ibn Hajar [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said about this Hadeeth;

The reason why you mother has been given a threefold virtue over your father is because of the difficulty she went through with you. She carried you, then she gave birth to you and then she breastfed you. These difficulties no one else can go through for your sake except your mother. After these three factors are taken out, then and only then can the father be equal to the mother. This is also indicated in the statement of Allaah, the Most High;

And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years give thanks to Me and to your parents, unto Me is the final destination

[Luqmaan 31:14]

So they have been made equal in the command to obey them however the mother has been made special by three factors. Qurtubee said, “The meaning of this is that the mother has more right for the child to obey him.” Al-‘Ayyaad said, “The majority of scholars say that the mother has more right for you to obey than your father.”

[Fath al-Baaree (10/402)]

Shaykh Abdul-Azeez bin Baaz [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said;

Some people have begun to copy the west by having a day in the year where they celebrate their mothers. However Islamic law dictates that we honour our mothers every day and all the time and there is no need to customise a special day in the year to honour her.

Khutbah: Importance of Islaam on Having a Clean Heart and Body

Delivered by Shaykh Abdul-Muhsin bin Muhammad al-Qaasim [May Allaah Preserve him] in Masjid an-Nabawee, Madeenah al-Nabawiyyah
26/2/1433

Verily, Allah Praise is due to Allaah, I Praise Him and I seek His Assistance and His Forgiveness. I seek refuge in him from the evils of ourselves and from the evil of our actions. Whoever Allaah guides none can lead astray, whoever Allaah allows to be lead astray none can guide.
I bear witness that there is no God except Allaah Alone without any partners, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger.

May the Peace of Allaah be upon him, his Family and his Companions and Blessings be upon them in abundance.
To Proceed:

Fear Allaah Oh Slaves of Allaah! Fear Him as he should be feared, fearing him will cause your insides to be honoured and your outwardly appearance to be beautified.
Oh Muslims:

The religion of Islaam is beautiful and complete and it commands us to be purified in our hearts and our bodies.
“Allah does not want to place you in difficulty, but He wants to purify you, and to complete His Favour on you that you may be thankful”
[Maaidah 5:6]

It orders us to be purified in our bodies from Shirk and other impurities;
“And (remember) when We showed Ibrahim (Abraham) the site of the (Sacred) House (the Ka'bah at Makkah) (saying): "Associate not anything (in worship) with Me, [La ilaha ill-Allah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah Islamic Monotheism], and sanctify My House for those who circumambulate it, and those who stand up for prayer, and those who bow (submit themselves with humility and obedience to Allah), and make prostration (in prayer, etc.);"
[Hajj 22:26]

Allaah gave the Messengers the attributes of having purity in their hearts, so He said about Ibraahim [Peace be Upon him];
“When he came to his Lord with a pure heart [attached to Allah Alone and none else, worshipping none but Allah Alone true Islamic Monotheism, pure from the filth of polytheism].”
[Saafaat 37: 84]

And He Protected Muhammad [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] when he was a child by giving him medicine in his heart. Anas [May Allaah be Pleased with him] narrated that, “Jibreel came to the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] whilst he was playing with children and he took him aside and split his chest open. He took out his heart and said, ‘Shaytan has been warded off from you’ then he washed it with Zam Zam water and bandaged it up and placed it back in its place.” [Narrated by Muslim]
When Allaah ordered the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] to go and give the message of Islaam, He mentioned his heart as being protected and purified, as He said:

“And your garments purify!”
[Mudatthir 74:4]

Sa’eed bin Jubayr [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said about this that it means, “Your heart and your intentions are pure.” Furthermore, this also used to be the supplication of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] as he would say,
اللهم نقِّني من الخطايا كما يُنقَّى الثوبُ الأبيضُ من الدَّنَس، اللهم اغسِل خطايايَ بالماء والثلجِ والبَرَد

“Oh Allaah! Remove mistakes from me like dirt is removed from white clothes. Oh Allaah! Wash off my mistakes in the same manner like water and ice purifies.” [Agree Upon]
When Allaah intended to exalted him [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] and raise his status on the night of Israa’ wal Mi’raaj, his heart was cleaned for a second time, therefore he only met Allaah, the Glorified, only in a state where his heart was pure and clean. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “Jibreel came down to me and opened my chest, then he cleaned my heart with Zam Zam water which was in golden vessels, he then washed my heart and sealed my chest and then took my with his hand and we then rose to the heavens.” [Agree Upon]

The people of Qubaa’ in Madeenah were praised for their level of Taqwa and their keenness to uphold purity. As Allaah, The Glorified, said:
“Never stand you therein. Verily, the mosque whose foundation was laid from the first day on piety is more worthy that you stand therein (to pray). In it are men who love to clean and to purify themselves. And Allah loves those who make themselves clean and pure (i.e. who clean their private parts with dust [i.e. to be considered as soap) and water from urine and stools, after answering the call of nature].”
[Tawbah 9:108]

Purity has been made a part of Eeman so whoever purifies himself, Allaah will love him
Truly, Allah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves (by taking a bath and cleaning and washing thoroughly their private parts, bodies, for their prayers, etc.).
[Baqarah 2:222]
The keys for Salaah is purity and none can enter the state of Salaah except if he is pure.

He, the Glorified, has also made a cause for one to enter Jannah if he is pure and rightoues, as none can enter Jannah unless he is pure and righteous. Allah, the Most High, says:
“And those who kept their duty to their Lord will be led to Paradise in groups, till, when they reach it, and its gates will be opened (before their arrival for their reception) and its keepers will say: Salamun 'Alaikum (peace be upon you)! You have done well, so enter here to abide therein."
[Zumar 39:73]
So whoever is purified in the Dunya then he will meet Allaah pure and he will enter Jannah. Whoever has not purified himself in the Dunya, and he remains in this state of impurity such as having Kufr, then he will not enter Jannah because of this. If he has impurities, then he will be under the Will of Allaah, it may be that He Will Punish and this will be a means of purification for him, then he will exit Jahannam and enter Jannah having been purified.

Therefore, being pure in one’s heart is a condition for entering Jannah, Allaah, The Glorified, says:
The Day whereon neither wealth nor sons will avail. Except him who brings to Allah a clean heart [clean from Shirk (polytheism) and Nifaq (hypocrisy)].”
[Shu’araa 26: 88-89]
Ibn al-Qayyim [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said, “It is not possible for a heart that ar-Rahmaan has purified be next to a heart that is filthy with the following of desires and showing off, this would never happen.”

The inner-side of one self is an adornment just like one adorns his physical outwardly appearance. It is from the supplications of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] to say;
اللهم زيِّنَّا بزينةِ الإيمان
“Oh Allaah! Adorn me with the adornment of Eeman.” [Narrated by an-Nasaai]

So the hearts are like bodies, some of them are good and pure whilst others are corrupt and evil. Some of them are alive whilst others are dead. So if your heart is purified then it will be filled with mercy and goodness, so Islaam gives importance for the rectification of the heart and it prohibits all the paths that lead to it being corrupted. From the major forms of rectification is for one to have Tawheed and sincerity in his action, making them for Allaah Alone. That which corrupts the heart and kills is making Shirk with Allaah, Allaah, The Glorified and The Exalted, says:

“Verily, the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, and in the Message of Muhammad) are Najasun (impure)…”
[Tawbah 9:28]

And He warned us from disgrace and punishment;
“Those are the ones whose hearts Allah does not want to purify (from disbelief and hypocrisy); for them there is a disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter a great torment.”
[Maaidah 5:41]
He described the hypocrites when he said;

“They will swear by Allah to you (Muslims) when you return to them, that you may turn away from them. So turn away from them. Surely, they are Rijsun [i.e. Najasun (impure) because of their evil deeds], and Hell is their dwelling place, - a recompense for that which they used to earn.”
[Tawbah 9:95]
Ibn Katheer [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said about this Ayah, “Meaning, they are filthy and impure in their inner-selves and outer-selves.”

Spite and envy has diseased their hearts, so if ones heart is not made right then the heart will become overcome with corruptness and oppression, as the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “Do not hate one another, do not envy on another and do not dispute with one another, be brothers Oh Slaves of Allah!”
And a man came in the presence of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] and he told his Companions, “This man is from the People of Jannah.” So when he was asked why, the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] told them, “He doesn’t hold any grudge against the Muslims, he doesn’t have envy with anyone with what Allaah has given to them.” [Narrated by Ahmad]

And from the supplication of the believers is;
“And those who came after them say: "Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith, and put not in our hearts any hatred against those who have believed. Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful.”
[Hashr 59:10]
Ibn al-Qayyim [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said, “I have not seen anyone who has combined all the forms of and has practiced mercy and pardoning, peace in his heart than Ibn Taymiyyah.”

The heart that is strong is a happy and clear one, it is quick to have an effect, it doesn’t sin much and thus not effected by sins. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “If a person makes a mistake then a black dot appears on his heart, if he asks for forgiveness then the heart becomes purified but if he carries on sinning without asking for forgiveness then it will take over his heart completely, and this is called Raan, that which Allaah mentioned;
“Nay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering of sins and evil deeds) which they used to earn”
[Muttafifeen :14]”
[Narrated by at-Tirmidhee]

So it is obligatory upon the slave to wash his heart every day and night, and from these purifies of the heart are the obligatory prayers. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “If you see a river outside the house of a person and he bathes in it five times a day, do you think there will be any dirt left on him?” The Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them] replied, “No dirt will remain on him.” The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] then stated, “This is the example of the five daily prayers, Allaah removes by it the sins of a person.” [Agreed Upon]
So whoever prays after purifying himself, then this will be a cause for him to enter Jannah, as the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “There is no Muslim who does Wudhoo well, then he stands and prays two Rak’aat, facing his heart and face to Him, except Jannah becomes obligatory upon him.” [Agreed Upon]

Wudhoo is the medicine for your heart and your limbs, as the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “If the slave, the Muslim makes Wudhoo by washing his face then the sins of his face are removed with that water, the sins that his eyes have committed are removed with that water. When he washes his hands the sins his hands are removed with that water, when he washes his feet all his sins are removes with that water, until he leaves his house pure from any sins.” [Agreed Upon]
From the things that are connected to purification are the words of Tawheed, when he says them the eight doors of Jannah are opened for him. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “There is none of you except if he performs Wudhoo and then says;

أشهدُ أن لا إله إلا الله، وأشهدُ أن محمدًا عبدُه ورسولُه
I bear witness that there is no God except Allaah and I bear witness that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger.

Except the eight doors of the Jannah will be opened for him and he may enter from any of the doors he wishes.” [Narrated by Ahmad]

The Zakaat that we pay is also a means of our hearts being purified, Allaah, the Glorified, says:
“Take Sadaqah (alms) from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it, and invoke Allah for them. Verily! Your invocations are a source of security for them, and Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.”
[Tawbah 9:103]
The Words of the Lord of the Aalameen is a cure for the hearts and bodies, as He, The Glorified and The Exalted, says;
“And We send down from the Qur'an that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism and act on it), and it increases the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers) nothing but loss.”
[Israa’ 17:82]
Sticking the group and the Jama’aah of the Muslims and being sincere to them is also a factor that rectifies and purifies your heart. As the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “There are three that can’t be taken out the heart of a Muslim; sincerity in doing deeds for Allaah, being sincere and advising the rulers of the Muslims and sticking to the Jama’aah.” [Narrated by at-Tirmidhee]

The Hijaab is also a means of purity and chastity, He, The Glorified and The Exalted, says;
“And when you ask (his wives) for anything you want, ask them from behind a screen, that is purer for your hearts and for their hearts.”
[Ahzaab 33:53]
Sitting with the righteous and protecting ones tongue can also purify the heart. Being far from trials and tribulations and the different types of Fitnah is also a means of having the heart purified. The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “Fitnah turns the heart away like the way a straw mat is made, thread by thread. So if a heart tastes the Fitnah then it will have a black spot placed on it. If a heart is freed from it or denies it then there is a white spot placed on it.” [Narrated by Muslim]

Inner purification perfects the outer purification. So Islaam gives importance to purification of the bodies of the humans from the cradle to the grave, so if a baby is born then it is circumcised and its hair is shaved and when he dies he has his body washed and scented before he is buried.
The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] used to love perfume and the white lines musk would be visible on the middle parting of his hair. He would brush his teeth with Siwaak whilst doing Wudhoo, before praying, when entering the home and when waking up from sleep.

He also ordered us to trim our moustaches and stated this was from the natural disposition of a human or ‘Fitrah’. Also from the Fitrah is to grow the beard, use Siwaak, rinse your nose and mouth with water, cut your nails, to use stones when cleaning your private parts, pluck your armpit hairs, shave your pubic hairs and use water when cleaning yourself after defecation or urination, and to be circumcised. The time for us to trim and cut the relevant hair and nails is that it should not exceed forty days and nights.
And He [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] ordered all the Muslims to at least have one bath (or shower) a week, as he said, “The right of every Muslim is to have a bath (or shower) once within every seven days, in which he washes his head and body.” [Agree Upon]

When the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] would sneeze he would place his hand over his mouth with a cloth and he would try to make as little as noise as possible. [Narrated by Aboo Dawood]
He also ordered for our pavements and roads to be free from any harm to the Muslims, as he [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “The deeds of my Ummah were presented to me, the good and the bad, and I found from the good deeds was for the Muslims to remove harm from the roads…” [Narrated by Muslim]

He also explained to us on how to clean ourselves in the bathroom, he prohibited us from using too many stones (or too much toilet paper), to clean our private parts with the right hand, to use food or bones to clean ourselves with and not to use more than three stones when wiping (or using three sheets or sides of toilet paper).
He also prohibited us from anything that would lead to a decrease in our integrity. So he forbade us from breathing into our drinking vessel, or blowing (and sniffing) our food and if he we eat or drink and not to put our mouth to the vessel (or put our lips to the bottle) when drinking as this leads to it becoming foul and putrid.

When one wakes up from sleeping, he should not place his hands into water or a vessel until he washes his hands three times. If a dog drinks of eats from your vessel to wash it seven times, once being with earth. He also made the time period for us to wipe over our socks, one day and one night and three days and nights for the traveller, this time period has been set so that the Muslim doesn’t neglect washing his feet, as washing the feet cleans it and it free it from the fire, “Protect your heels from the hellfire.” [Agreed Upon]
He also warned us from having a smell which may offend others, he [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “If one eats garlic or onions then he should change it and he should not come to our Masjid, rather he should sit at home.” [Agree Upon]

The impurity of alcohol and that which intoxicates the mind has also been warned against, as we have been told that the one who does this act of impurity won’t have his prayers accepted for forty days.
The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] also commanded us to keep the Masaajid clean, there used to be an old black lady who would clean the Masjid and he made it an objective to pray over her even after she had been buried [Narrated by Aboo Dawood]

This all explains that the heart being pure is directly connected to your actions being pure, both effecting each other, so we have been prohibited from wearing silk or the leather of wild animals and from letting our clothes dangle below our ankles, because of the effect it would have on our hearts, on our behaviour, on our worship and the tranquillity we have.
After this, Oh Muslims!

The religion of Islaam is complete, there is nothing more complete and there is nothing greater than it. There is nothing that is more purifying for the slave except it. The one who is happy is the one whose heart is clean, his actions and statements are free from that which Angers his Lord, he only uses them with what He Loves and is Pleased with and he thanks Him for all the Favours He has Blessed upon him.
I seek refuge in Allaah from the accursed Shaytan.
“O Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts, etc.) and as an adornment, and the raiment of righteousness, that is better. Such are among the Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, that they may remember (i.e. leave falsehood and follow truth)”
[‘Araaf 7:26]
May Allaah Bless me and you with the Majestic Quraan; benefit me and you from what it contains from the Ayaat and the Dhikr al-Hakeem. What you have heard is what I have to say, I seek forgiveness in Allaah for myself and for you all and all the Muslim from all sins, so seek his forgiveness, verily He is al-Ghafoor ar-Raheem.

New Book: A Summary of the Benefits that can be Found in the Etiquettes of the Teacher and the Student

By
Al-Allaamah Shaykh Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Nasir Aaal-as-Sa’dee
 Compiled and prepared
by
Shaykh Muhammad bin Sulaymaan Abdul-Azeez Aaal-Bassaam
A former teacher in the Masjid al-Haram in Makkah

All Praise be to Allaah and May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon His Messenger, his family, his companions and all those who follow his guidance until the Last Day.

To begin:

Sincerity in your Intentions
The people of knowledge, from the teachers and the students, have given important to this nd have made it the foundation for all their affairs. They are the ones who build upon this principle in all of their movements and their moments of silence, having pure sincerity for Allaah in order to get close to him by this form of worship. An act of worship that that is needed for others acts of worship to be perfected, beneficial and in making it successful. So they search for this great principle in all moments of their day, in every minute of every affair.

So if you teach or study, research or are reading, listen or being listened to, writing or memorising, or even if you having personal tutoring or if you are revising from the books, or if you are sitting in the circles of knowledge or if you are the feet of the scholars, or if you are buying a book in order to gain some knowledge in a specific field; having sincerity to Allaah is the way one can account his rewards and gain the repayment, this is the only way he can profit his actions. By having sincerity, all of the actions we do can become acts of obedience and nearness to Allaah, as a result from all of this, we gain dignity and honour from Him. Accomplishing this is actualizing the Hadeeth of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him], “Whoever seeks a path in seeking knowledge, will have his path to Jannah made easy.” [Reported by Muslim, 4/2074]

This includes all the paths in seeking knowledge, whether this is physical or metaphorical, thus the people of knowledge are those who are specialized in this and are included in this Hadeeth.

Based on this, that what we need to be focused from the very beginning of seeking knowledge is to have sincerity, this is extremely important for us to understand and implement. After that, we then move on to seeking knowledge, whilst seeking knowledge it is important that we prioritise and organize what we will learn, starting with what is of most importance.

Arabic Language
From the important sciences and disciplines one must learn is the knowledge of the Arabic language, this is something well-known amongst the people. Therefore it is binding that we facilitate the different ways needed in order to attain this goal.  There are books that are available on this topic, so you should return to them for further benefit.

Studying from What is Appropriate and Having a Syllabus
You should give these books importance, you should busy yourselves with them and memorise them if it is possible, or continually study them, ponder on the depth of them so that you can understand and remember their contents. You should make sure that you repeatedly give these books your attention by returning back to them. Therefore, it is upon the teacher to review himself, reviewing his strengths and weaknesses. He should not teach books that are not appropriate from him to teach because this would be a breach of sincerity on his part. Verily, a small amount of understanding and knowledge is better than one forgetting and not having any knowledge at all. Likewise, one should make sure that he fully understand what he studies, he should repeat the topic until he fully understands and he shouldn’t move from a particular issue on to another, until he fully understand it.

If one moves on from one issue without understanding it properly, onto another, then this will also be a cause for him not to understand the following issue properly either. This is because usually, issues follow on from each other in and a subsequent order. Failing to do this may lead for many issues becoming unclear to him and he may not be able to distinguish the truth or truly understand them, thus he will always find himself going back and forth. This is important, so pay attention to this point.

Patience when Teaching and Learning
It is also incumbent on the teacher to give good advice to his students, in all his ability. He should be patient whilst teaching as his students may not be able to always immediately comprehend what he is teaching them. So he should teach them without rebuking or being vain towards them. Even if the teacher is desperate for his students to learn, he should not forget teaching with good manners, this is because the teacher has the truth with him and the student is ready to accept this knowledge, he wants to be benefitted by the knowledge and possible benefit others further on. Therefore, the teacher becomes the central point of focus it is incumbent for the teacher to make the knowledge he passes on multiple in benefit, helping others to understand, memorise and grow. He should teach by using the best approach or methodology, he has the same status as a father, because the teacher inherits knowledge and then becomes the inheritor of it.

Allaah, the Most High, says;

"And Verily! I fear my relatives after me, since my wife is barren. So give me from Yourself an heir. "Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophethood, not the wealth, etc.). And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased!"

[Maryam 19:5-6]

The meaning of inheriting in this Ayah means that he passes on knowledge and wisdom. Therefore, teachers are rewarded for what he teaches, whether the students understand it or not. If the students understand and benefit from it and then they benefit others, then the reward for the teacher is multiplied, as long as the series of those who benefit continue. So this is from the greatest types of business and profit one can benefit from.

So it becomes incumbent on the teacher to go exert himself to make sure his students benefit and develop from under his wing. These are some of the virtues which are extracted from the knowledge that he possess and the benefits it may bring.

Allaah, the Most High, says;

"Verily, We give life to the dead, and We record that which they send before (them), and their traces [their footsteps and walking on the earth with their legs to the mosques for the five compulsory congregational prayers, Jihad (holy fighting in Allah's Cause) and all other good and evil they did, and that which they leave behind], and all things We have recorded with numbers (as a record) in a Clear Book."

[Yaaseen 36:12]

‘That which they sent before’ as mentioned in this Ayah refers to the way one pursued and went after his good or bad deeds.

‘And their traces’ in the Ayah refers to the benefit or the harm his deeds may have resulted in.

Therefore, the student must take all the roads to benefit fully from his teacher, understanding everything he is taught and he should strive to learn the technological terms used in each of the sciences and disciplines he studies.

Manners and Behaviour
The students must behave in the best of manners with his teacher, manners that they deserve in a general and specific sense.

As for the general manners, then this means that teacher should be readily available to help bring about benefit and all types of goodness for the creation, via his knowledge and his Fataawaa. So his right upon the general people is that he is good to them. His manners must reflect his position; his manners must be from the best forms of manners as he is the leader for the general people in their religious affairs. He must teach them in matters that they are ignorant of so that he may be a cause of goodness to come them and preventing from evils and misguidance from entering into their religious matter. He should be from those who benefit those who are present around him, thus the benefit continuing to others and so on from the generations to come.

If it wasn’t for knowledge then people would be like animals wondering in darkness and misguided by their blindness but knowledge is a life and it guides people from this darkness, it breathes life into their lives and souls, in the matters of their religion and their daily lives.

If there is a land that doesn’t have this, the people have no vice to seek guidance and their affairs explained to them and being warned from what is harmful for them, then staying in such a land has no benefit. So if these are the benefits and effects, then how can it be that a Muslim doesn’t wish for these things and try to uphold them?

As for the specific manners that the teacher should have, then this is for the teacher to be humble towards those who he teaches. He should be eager to guide them and seek the ways for them to arrive to the highest of stations.

They teach them the easier knowledge before the more difficult. They value their time and they ponder on ways to make their students understand, using any of the means necessary for the message they are teaching to be understood by their students. So if there is a person who is good to other people and he gives out gifts to others, it is expected that the one who receives the gift treats the one who gave him the gift in likeminded kindness. So what do you think should be given to the one who teaches, the one who guides and spreads various types of enriched benefit to people?

The fruits of knowledge is that the benefit remains as long as the person who has benefit is alive, and he then passes it on to others working like a chain, this is the reality of the gift given by the teacher. Therefore, you should know the rights that are upon him and have the best possible manners with him.

Don’t leave the guidance he gives you and the instructions he continues to advise you with, sit in front of him with manners and make it apparent that you desire the knowledge he has. You should supplicate for your teacher whether you are in his presence or not, and if he gives you a point of benefit or even if he teaches you something that you already knew, don’t make it seem like you are disinterested. There should be no difference in your manners towards him whether he teaches you something new or not. Rather you should remain attentive to him because he may expand on the information that you already knew by giving you an extra benefit. These are from the manners one should have when learning from people, whether this be in religious or worldly studies.

Making and Correcting Mistakes
If the teacher makes a mistake, then you should correct him with kindness and whilst being pleasant. Don’t say things like, ‘You have made a mistake’ or ‘It's not how you said it is’, rather you should be careful with your wording, be kind when approaching your teachers mistakes as kindness will prevent any form of resentment from entering the heart of your teacher.

These are from the binding rights that your teacher has upon you. From the ways which prevent one from returning to the correct opinion is by refuting him and giving advice in an inappropriate and harsh way, this will cause discomfort in the hearts and will prevent people from reaching the truth, thus contradicting your original intention, which was to guide them or give them advice.

Likewise this is also necessary upon teacher to return to the truth if he has made a mistake. He should not prevent himself following the truth, if he has an opinion and then finds something opposing his view to be the correct opinion then he should return to the truth. This is a sign of equity, humility and that he is upon the truth. It is Waajib for him to follow the truth whether the truth is presented to him from a small child or an elderly man.

It is from the favours of Allaah upon the teacher that he has students that will point out his mistakes, and that they seek for him to be guided to what is correct, and that they don’t tolerate him remaining on an opinion with is not correct or for him to remain in a state of ignorance. Based on this, the teacher needs to gives thanks to Allaah, The Exalted and The Glorified,  and then thank the person who have corrected him and guided him to Allaah's guidance, whether this be another teacher or anyone else.

Saying 'Allaah Knows Best'
From the greatest of obligations upon the teachers is for them to say, when they don’t know; ‘Allaah and His Messenger Know best.’  By saying this, his status isn’t decreased rather it is increases it. By saying this, it acts as a proof that he is interested in making your religion, and your research into the issue, a correct one. For the one who admits to not knowing and stopping where he doesn’t know, will bring about many benefits. From them are the following;

-He is fulfilling what is obligatory upon him.

-If he withholds and says ‘I don’t know’ then it opens the path for knowledge to come to him, either he will find the answer after looking into it or someone will inform of it.

-Also, if he stops at what he doesn’t know then this is evidence that he is trustworthy and precise, he doesn’t talk except with certainty in any of the issues that may arise. Unlike the one who talks and we are not sure where he sources his information from, like a person who calls to doubts every time he talks, even if the issue is a clear and simple issue.

-Also from the benefits is that it acts as a lesson to the students and a form of guidance to a good and virtuous path. Actions and the way the teacher conducts himself can teach more of a lesson then verbal instructions.

-Another specific goal that can be attained by this is the fact that the door for the students to research into areas for themselves is opened. They will research matters for themselves with one common goal, which is to find the true position based on evidence. So if this is encouraged then it leads to the students growing in their ability to contemplate and for them to take proof as a source for them to follow what is correct in its reality. This is what the original purpose was, to find the truth and to follow it.

Have justice when Seeking Knowledge
So be cautious with the utmost of caution in following and having bias towards follow the views of the scholars blindly, rather the intent should be to have a discussion on the view of the scholars which is based on strength. If one is bias to his Madhab then the sincerity of attaining knowledge and then the fruitfulness of finding knowledge disappears. The depths of the facts disappear and the doors for grudges and revenges are opened. Therefore, equity is the adornment of knowledge, the address of it is sincerity and to give sincere advice and to find happiness.

So the student of knowledge must be cautious in seeking in knowledge for the purpose of corruption and evil intent. He should be cautious in falling into trying to parade himself, to flaunt and all the passages to showing off and seeking reputation.  Likewise, he should be careful going through the doors that lead to him seeking the reward in the Dunya and making this his sole purpose. This is not the condition of the people of knowledge so the students of knowledge must be one who seeks to block out all the ways that lead to evil or showing off or gaining reputation, because this has nothing to do with the hereafter.

From the majority characteristics of the people of knowledge, and this is exclusive to them, is the fact that they have manners, they are an example of doing good deeds and that they have the ability to teach. Because of this, they are the people who have the upmost need of having good manners, beautiful conduct and that they treat all of the creation with the best of behavior, not repelling those who come to them in a repulsive way.

They are the most important of people when it comes to establishing the obligations of the religion, the obligations that are apparent or hidden. The scholars are those who doing acts that are prohibited. So once we know that which makes the people of knowledge and awareness special, we know the difference between them and those who are not from the people of knowledge, because they are an example for the people in their daily lives and that they help them leave arguments and matters of disputes. They help people eave all that which will bring dispraise and a bad towards others, this happens when the normal people leave following the path of those who don't know and trading it in following the path of those who have knowledge, the path which is superior to all other paths.

Acting by the Knowledge you Have
In addition, the Salaf would seek refuge in having knowledge and not acting by it, this is because doing good deeds helps one to become settled, helps one to grow and it brings about an abundance of blessings. If one leaves doing good deeds then he miss out on all of this, or at the very least, he won't have any blessings in his life. Giving life to knowledge and establishing knowledge is done by implementing it ones actions, he instills it in himself, he teaches it and he gives advice according to it. And there is no Might or Power except with Allaah.

Teaching Techniques
So it is incumbent for you to have manners that will benefit yourself when you learn and when you teach. So if the teacher explains an issue, it is clear with evidences and it is easy for the students to learn and comprehend, he uses simple wording and he gives examples. However, the teacher, despite doing all of this, if he doesn’t seek to stimulate the minds of the students or he doesn’t ask them to research the matter for themselves so they have a more profound understanding or he doesn’t give the students a chance to learn in an order that they will find it easier to understand the subject, such as the teacher moving on quickly before they understand the topic onto another topic, or he moves onto another topic before finishing the previous one, then this will be disruptive to the students. It will prevent their minds from understanding and soaking in the knowledge and thus the benefits will be lost, as he has mixed the topics and was not organized when teaching.

So it is a must that the knowledge that the students learn be summarized, the students urged to memorise what is important. The students can be tested to see if they know the generality of the topic by testing them by having examinations, encouraging them to revise and reinforcing what they have learned. Learning is like planting trees. Lessons, revising, repetition are all ways to water the roots that have been planted and it allows that what is harming the roots to be expelled.

Student Attitude towards Sitting with the Teacher or Scholar
Likewise, it is very important that the students have the utmost respect and have excellent conduct with the teacher. Moreover, he should be honoured in learning with the teacher and his behavior and respect towards him reflects this.

Having good friends and classmates when learning and seeking knowledge combines many of these rights, this is because having good friends whilst seeking knowledge helps instill the brotherhood of Islam. It helps us honour our fellow Muslim brothers and it enables us to help them in cooperating in what is beneficial to them, what will benefit the masses, which is to be affiliated with a teacher or a scholar. The teachers and scholars have the status of fathers, so it is a right that everyone benefits from them.

Based on this, it is necessary that we don’t leave giving the scholars and the teachers the just estimation they deserve, they deserve the right for us to think good of them, that they will benefit us with what they teach us and they be w cause of removal of ignorance from ourselves. So researching and studying together, under the supervision of a scholar, is a good way to benefit. So it is a must that we sit with them in every opportunity we have, so that we may learn, whether that be a simple or a slightly more advanced lesson.

These sittings are blessed as they have a transfer of knowledge; the one who knows teaches the one who doesn’t know. These sittings help one deduce beneficial lessons and it removes any doubt or areas or concern one may have.

Be wary of Sinning and Wasting Time
Also, beware of being too concerned with the affairs of the people and seeking to check and investigate what they are upon. It has become rampant today that people seek to find the state of a person or try and find faults in him, so be wary of this.

The sins of those who have knowledge is greater than those who sin from the normal people, this is because they are aware of what they are doing and the reasons why it is not prohibited, the normal people are lesser than them, they in reality follow the scholars.

Whoever does sins, those other than the scholars, are those who are behind the scholars and are in need of the scholars to explain their mistakes. If the scholars busy themselves with teaching and advising the normal folk, this will bring about betterment for the general people and it will change their time being resourced for things that will benefit them, it will bring out the joy and the illumination that knowledge can bring.

Don’t forget to Seek your Provision
Know! Seeking your provision and being financially balanced is a responsibility upon every single person, especially those who are busied with knowledge; this is in fact something that is even more exclusive to them. This is because knowledge is an occupation; it is like a career which takes him his whole life or most of it. So when he becomes busied with the Dunya and what he needs from it, it can distract him from this occupation. If one wants to become rich and this becomes his sole intent then this will be the greatest factors of him wasting his life, being busy with the Dunya will prevent the student from learning.

Teachers and Students Should put their Knowledge into Writing
From the manners of the scholars and the students is that they should be encouraged to partake in beneficial research, according to their ability. So if a student wants to know about a particular issue, by researching the issue it will bring greater benefit and he will find blessings within it because from the fruits of knowledge is the others benefit by it. So if someone has knowledge and he dies, the knowledge dies with him or it may even be the case that one has knowledge during his life but forgets it whilst he still alive. Therefore, researching and having study papers is like he is bringing the knowledge to life, he is protecting it by teaching other and Allaah, The Glorified and The Exalted, will reward him according to the benefit he gives us.

Seeking Betterment for People
From the most important of things that are exclusive to seeking and teaching knowledge is the fact that researching makes people united and their hearts become one. It blocks the ways for evilness to enter and it expels hatred and enmity between them. Therefore, this goal must be the main focus on where they seek to head, from all of the paths they traverse, having one intent and goal, because what they intend and seek is the same thing; a profound betterment involving all.

Loving the Scholars
This goal is actualized and perfected with love, so you should love all and have love for the people of knowledge, the very people who we have benefitted from and they have become busy because of our needs. We shouldn’t have any disagreements with them or speak of them in a bad way. Speaking ill about them is from the factors which will create barrier between us and having love for them. So we should love on another, we should be soft for one another; we should give advice with kindness towards those who try to warn each other from falling into what opposes this, those who try to create disunity and hatred, the opposite of having love for one another.

In reality, this objective is honourable and its intent is to create a great deal of good, good that we can't even begin to count. Even if we don’t know the benefit, the mere fact remains; the Legislator has encouraged us to attain using a variation of different ways.

Those who are more right for our love and have a greater need of having it. are the people who have knowledge because knowledge is the greatest form of having sincerity and giving advice, something that is instilled in the core of this religion and its soul.

By having this characteristic, the characteristic of knowledge, the lowly slave becomes attached to the people of knowledge, those who have been exalted. The people of knowledge are those people about which the Kitaab and Sunnah has praise for extensively, praise which we would not be able to summarise here.

Exposing knowledge to the masses and creating the ability to increase in it, allows knowledge to be circulated. If all of the people of knowledge learn from one source, using one methodology, then it will become easier for them to learn and spread this knowledge. However, if they learned from various different sources, each scholar having his own strategy, this will cause the benefit to be rooted, it won’t spread and it will in fact be detrimental. It may even create bias, partisanship and enmity, each scholar checking and investigating the other, looking for mistakes. This all contradicts what the religion intends and it actually opposes common sense. Therefore, the people of knowledge and the Salaf as-Saaleh were cautious and were wary of this.

The successful one is the one who sincere to Allaah and in having Tawheed, he establishes worship to Him Alone, both inwardly and outwardly. By sincerity, one can accurately account oneself, being sincere to the Kitaab of Allaah and in having Eemaan in it and what is contains.  He proposes himself to learn and teach it and whatever may be connected to it from the other sciences of the Shariah.

The successful one is the one who has Eeman in the Messenger, he believes in all that he came with, whether it may be part of the ‘Aqeedah or the otherwise, he brings forward the Sunnah in his life ahead of anything else, loving him with all the love he can give to anyone after Allaah, the Most High. He establishes himself on the Sunnah, all that he [Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon him] came with, that which is connected to what is inwardly and outwardly.

He is sincere to the Muslims, their rulers and the general folk, he loves them and loves good for them, and he supports them in word and action. He loves to be united under the ruler, obeying him and not rebelling against him.

He is sincere to the general masses from the Muslims, he loves for them what he loves for himself and he hates for them what he hates for himself. He is true to them in his heart and what is apparent, in his word and actions. He supplicates for the Muslims in general to be strong and guided to the correct path.

So I ask Allaah, al-Kareem, to Love us and make us of those who love what He Loves, to love that which will bring us close to His Love and to provide us with his Mercy, verily he is al-Wahaab.

May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon Muhammad, on his Family and his Companions.
