Haafidh Ibn Rajab al-Hanbalee (d.795) [May Allaah have Mercy on him] says in his book Lataa'if al-Ma'aarif (Pg. 142-149)
It is mentioned in the Two Saheehs that ‘Aaishah [May Allaah be Pleased with her] said, “The Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] would increase even more so in worship during the last ten nights of Ramadhaan, he would fasten is lower garment, stand the night in prayer and he would wake his family up as well.”
In another narration narrated by Imaam Muslim that ‘Aaishah [May Allaah be Pleased with her] said, “The Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] strove even harder in the last ten nights more than he would do on the other nights.”
The Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] singled out the last ten nights of Ramadhaan with a range of acts of worship that he wouldn’t do otherwise. Such as:
He would stay up the whole night in prayer.
It was narrated that ‘Aaishah [May Allaah be Pleased with her] said, “The Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] would stay up during the night…”
It is also narrated in the Musnad with another wording, “The Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] would mix the first twenty nights with Salaat and sleep but when the last ten nights came, he would fasten his lower garment.”
I say: The meaning of these narrations is that the action of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] was to stand the night in prayer until morning.
Imaam Shafi’ee [May Allaah have Mercy on him] mentioned in al-Umm that the scholars of al-Madeenah were of the view that even an hour during the night is sufficient.
It is narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas [May Allaah be Pleased with him] would stand the night in prayer, beginning with ‘Ishaa in congregation until the people would return to pray Fajr in congregation.
Imaam Maalik [May Allaah have Mercy on him] in his Muwatta’ narrates that it reached him that Ibn Musayyab [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said, “Whoever prays Laylat al-Qadr in congregation then he has gained from the treasures of that night.”
Ash-Shafi’ee [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said, “Whoever prays ‘Ishaa and Fajr prayers on the Laylat al-Qadr then he has gained from the rewards of the night.”
It is also narrated that Aboo Hurayrah [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said, “Whoever prays ‘Ishaa in congregation during the last days of Ramadhaan then he would have stood Laylat al-Qadr.” This was narrated by Aboo Shaykh al-Asbahaanee
So if a person realizes the status of Laylat al-Qadr then it is binding upon him to stand the nights of Ramadhaan in prayer so that he will be sure that he has met that night. From the statement of the scholars is that the person should stand every night of Ramadhaan in prayer. Others added that he should stand half the night of every night in Ramadhaan in prayer. Others, like our companions, said that he should stand at least half the night during the last ten nights in prayer.http://ahledhikr.blogspot.com/2014/07/chapter-39-virtues-of-last-ten-days-of.html
