Seeking knowledge is to be sought in stages, it has levels and degrees and it is absolutely essential that one doesn’t transgress them

Aboo ‘Umar Yoosuf ibn Abdullah Ibn Abdul-Barr al-Andalusee [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

“Seeking knowledge is to be sought in stages, it has levels and degrees and it is absolutely essential that one doesn’t transgress them. If one transgresses any one of them then it as if he has transgressed all the levels, and by transgressing them, one will have gone astray from the path of the Salaf  [May Allaah have mercy on them all]. If one contravenes this all on purpose, then he will be misguided and whoever transgresses these levels by working too hard, then he will slip.

So the first thing he must do is to memorise the Book of Allaah, The Glorified and The Exalted, and to he must understand it. And he must understand and learn everything that is applicable to him, as this is obligatory upon him. And I don’t say that memorizing everything this obligatory, rather I say it is obligatory and binding for the one who wants to be a scholar to do so, this is whom it is obligatory upon.”
