al-Hasan al-Basri: Lower the Dunya Otherwise YOU will be Lowered

Al-Hasan al-Basri (Allah have Mercy on him) said:

أهينوا الدنيا، فوالله لأهنأ ما تكون إذا أهنتها

Belittle the Dunya. For by Allah! We would be happy as long as we belittle her.

Ibn Umar said:

إِنِّي أَبْغَضُكَ فِي اللَّهِ ؛ إِنَّكَ تُحَسِّنُ صَوْتَكَ - يَعْنِي : فِي الْأَذَانِ - لِأَجْلِ الدَّرَاهِمِ 

I hate you for the sake of Allah. You beautify your voice (in Athaan) for the sake of Dirhams.
