Strange New Courses: An Isnad for the Athan!

Question: There is a course where the students will learn the Athan with a chain of narration going back to Bilal (may Allah be Pleased with him), have you heard of this before?

Shaykh Asim al-Quryuti (may Allah Preserve him): No, by Allah - Allah's Aid is Sought.

TN: this is a course which is being offered where people are told that they can learn to call the Athan just like the way Bilal (may Allah be Pleased with him) used to call it but the claims to have a chain of narration back to him are all lies.

For a detailed response (in Arabic) please read the following article by Shaykh Abd al-Haqq Turkmani where the Shaykh exposes the chain to be full of unknown narrators: https://turkmani.com/articles/248

al-Jaami: He Studied Usool at-Thalatha then He Issues His Opinion on People!

You have only studied Usool at-Thalatha then you sit in the corner and issue rulings upon people, "Such and such person is a Taghoot", "Such and such person is a Jaahil", "Such and such person is an innovator", "The one who doesn't make Tabdee' is a Mubtadi' himself!" Fataawa that come out of the window and from the corners of the Masaajid and from houses from those who have still not studied anything whatsoever! Have mercy on the people. Rather, have mercy on yourselves. This is a mistake.

Shaykh Saaleh aal ash-Shaykh and the New World Order

There is a political thought adopts a tyrannical approach. It is authoritarian which has been created by the political elite. Their motto is to appear to promote peace and unity.

Some people may doubt the existence of a political elite, rather, they exist and have increased in their grip over the last two centuries.

They appear to spread peace and unity under the name of civilization. They want to remove hate within society.

These things are all praiseworthy.

Peace – Allah is as-Salam and peace comes from Him.

Unity – something good and fair for those who deserve it.

Removing hate – something good for those who deserve not to be hated.

But the reality is shocking…

They want from the population, from the Muslim world, that they interact with them peaceful – all the while - they are not peaceful back.

They want for us to love them, all the while - they do not love us back.

They want for us to remove hatred towards them, all the while – they hate us back.

So with what criterion are they measuring with?

The authoritarian wants to control the world and wants for his ideologies to spread under the name of spreading peace.

However, we are the ones who have forcefully handed ourselves over to the authoritarian. We have submitted our religion, our creed (Aqidah), our countries, our populations, our legal code (Shari’ah) – we have given all of this to them because of the threat they pose.

They have taken full control over all of these things and even our homes have not been spared and then they say, “Live with us in peace”.

Unity – but they don’t want to unite with us. Read the global reports that come out from every nation, you will then see the size of the plots they have against the Muslims and the followers of Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him).

Removing hate – don’t discriminate, but they label as-Salafiyyah or what they call “Wahhabism” as being extreme forms of Islam. They spread hate, isn’t the world filled with hate [as account of their actions]?

If a person doesn’t allow you to live your life, will such a person ever intend good for you? No.

Love has to be mutual between those who share the same creed. Peace can exist outside of this creed under mutual cooperation [and respect] and the various forms it can be created.

But being forced to live in a world where there is [only their perspective of] peace, unity and removal of hatred [without conditions] – is a perversion of the natural disposition (Fitrah). This is a form of tyrannical authoritarianism, even if it is psychological [and not physical].

Based on this, what you see today and with living life in difficulty - then it becomes obligatory for us to return to the foundations of the religion. The foundations of the religion instils in you certainty because Allah is the One who has legislated how we should think. The way we think is because Allah is the One who Legislated it for us. Who is the One who Knows who we should be careful of and who we should cooperate with? Allah, the Glorified and Exalted.

In the Quran our Lord, the Glorified and Exalted, Said to us:

وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِأَعْدَائِكُمْ وَكَفَى بِاللَّهِ وَلِيًّا وَكَفَى بِاللَّهِ نَصِيرًا

Allah knows best who your enemies are! And Allah is sufficient as a Guardian, and He is sufficient as a Helper.

(an-Nisaa 4:45)

Therefore, He explained it to us, the Glorified and Exalted.

وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ عَدُوًّا مِّنَ الْمُجْرِمِينَ وَكَفَى بِرَبِّكَ هَادِيًا وَنَصِيرًا

“Similarly, We made enemies for every prophet from among the wicked, but sufficient is your Lord as a Guide and Helper”

(al-Furqaan 25:31)

In enmity, Allah – the Glorified and Exalted - is the One who will Help us. Jibreel will help us:

مَن كَانَ عَدُوًّا لِّلَّهِ وَمَلائِكَتِهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَجِبْرِيلَ وَمِيكَالَ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَدُوٌّ لِّلْكَافِرِينَ

“Whoever is an enemy of Allah, His angels, His messengers, Gabriel, and Michael, then ˹let them know that˺ Allah is certainly the enemy of the disbelievers.”

(al-Baqarah 2:98)

Therefore, enmity and unity all of this is eradicated by faith (Eman) and with whatever Allah, the Glorified and Exalted, has Said.

Do not turn to those who eradicate it without evidence, lest you deviate. That way, you will use Eman to eradicate it but it will be enslaved to those who carry no religious proof.

And do not be like those who become completely distorted – in line with the global authoritarian plan (the New World Order).

Because today’s authoritarian plan is changing everything, even creed and ideology.

Aal ash-Shaykh: Only as-Salafiyyah Challenges What is Happening Today

Today, when people talk about Islam, that which contradicts the Western outlook on Islam or the widespread ideology of secularism, they will label this as “Salafiyyah”.

The definition of "Salafiyyah" with them includes any school which believes that the source of legislation is the Book of Allah (the Most High) - that which is obligatory for us to return to so that we can define what relationship man has with everything around him.

The source of legislation is the Book, the Sunnah, Ijmaa (scholarly consensus) and principles and maxims [within them]. Whoever makes this the criterion for legislation they will label this as “Salafiyyah”.

Methodologies in Islam which are not Salafiyyah are those that theorise otherwise, such as saying that the Quran can be critically analysed using thought and theory – the Quran is still sacred, but it can be critiqued. Likewise the Sunnah is sacred by it can be critiqued, beleiving that they can take aspects and leave aspects [based on their analysis].

There is a constant mentioning of critical thinking in the establishment of civilisation. Civilization is part of a philosophical thinking which has a role in secularism today. What is civilisation? What do we do once we have establishment civilisation? etc. and all the details surrounding civilisation lends itself to the methodology that everything can be critically analysed.

Eventually, there is no proof in the sources of legislation anymore. Therefore, the ideologies in the western and the philosophies found within it – whether that comes from universities or political think tanks – if they use the term “Salafiyyah”, they don’t mean by it what we understand by Salafiyyah.

For us, as-Salafiyyah is to go back to the sources of legislation, that which was used by the four schools of thought – including; the Quran, the Sunnah, Ijma, Qiyas, Statements of the Companions, principles and maxims etc.

Without depending on theory for legislation makes you a "Salafiyyah", according to their labelling. Therefore, the only group that challenges the call for reform in civilisation are the Salafis. As for other sects that don’t show the same methodology of preserving the sources of legislation and in honouring them, then they give rise to them and they will label them accordingly.

al-Fawzan: Look for an Imam and Khateeb who is proficient

Q: This question is from UK; There is a Khateeb in our country, his Arabic isn't good and his Quran isn't good either (he delivers the Khutbah in English) and even when he qoutes evidences it's not in Arabic, because he fears making a mistake. The topic of his Khutbahs are mostly on refutations and talking about particular people by name,

What's your advice about such a Khateeb in our land?

A: Look for a different Imam - Al-Humdulilah - today ther are plenty who can deliver the Khutbah and have memorised the Quran in every place. Look for an Imam and Khateeb who is proficient.

Tazkiyyah: The Objective & a Warning Against Name-Calling

Question: What should the small student of knowledge do when he hears that a particular person has been praised but he is actually upon innovation, such as (someone having praise for him but) giving Fatwaa on the permissibility on building over graves?

Answer: He needs to explain the state of this person and make clear what the person is upon to the one that is praising him. Having praise or dispraise (from the scholars) is not the main objective; rather the main objective is to spread the Sharee’ah. Therefore, if we are able to dispel the innovation of the innovators without mentioning them, then this is what is more Beloved to Allaah and not mentioning their name in person, either good or bad. They should be advised, this is better and preferable[1].

al-Burjis: Rather, Their Accusations Carry No Weight At All

Shaykh Abdus-Salam bin Burjis (may Allah have Mercy on him) said:

We have been tested in these times by some of those who attribute themselves to Salafiyyah but are extreme in placing the label of "innovation" on people. To the extent that they class whole communities as being innovators. This is despite the fact that a ruling cannot be placed on anyone until the methodology of the alleged is first made clear. These (extremists) are ignorant of the Sharia. They are ignorant in understanding the terminologies used by scholars in relation to innovation and its people. So their accusations are of no authority. Rather, their accusations carry no weight at all. Al-Allamah Shaykh Abdul-Mushin bin Hamad al-Abbad has exerted effort in giving advice to them and warning them against their methodology in his book, 'People of the Sunnah, be Kind with One Another'. I ask Allah, the Most High's protection from all forms of extremism.

Winter Conferences: Because of Their Enmity, They Will Never Seek to Benefit from the Scholars That Attend

Shaykh Sa'ud ash-Shuraim Tweeted:

From the greatest dangers that occurs from differing is when one of the parties believes that he is unquestionably upon the truth and the truth he believes in is not open for discussion. With this kind of attitude he will see you as an opponent, unless if you are with him, you will always be incorrect, and this is gravest of dangers.

Al-'Uthaymeen on How to Deal with Differences in Ijtihaad

Shaykh Muhammad bin Saaleh al-‘Uthaymeen [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

It is upon the Muslims, and in particular the students of knowledge, to remain united as much as they are able to. Because the aspirations of the people of sin and deviation is to create disunity upon the people that are upon goodness. They know that there is no weapon that is more dangerous than causing indifference between them.

Moosaa [Peace be upon him] told the magicians that he was sent to invite (who were disbelievers at that time):

""Woe unto you! Invent not a lie against Allah, lest He should destroy you completely by a torment. And surely, he who invents a lie (against Allah) will fail miserably." Then they debated with one another what they must do, and they kept their talk secret." [Taa-Haa 20:61-62]

So when they differed (and innovated) they became divided and as a consequence, their solidarity was lost.

Nowadays, we witness a cause of differing and splitting caused by some of the brothers. They are eager to follow the Sunnah in this issue (of praying eleven for Taraaweeh) and in other issues (of Ijtihaad) also, but use their enthusiasm to create disunity between the Muslims. I say this in itself contrary to the Sunnah and contrary to the objectives of the Sharee’ah – to create unity between the Muslims and cohesion within the Ummah.

Praise be to Allaah, praying more than eleven (and other matters which are subject to Ijtihaad) is not something Haraam or something that needs to be shunned; rather it is an opinion which is subject to Ijtihaad.

This all creates disunity and enmity in the hearts of the Muslims, causing them to hate and mock one another, just because they differed in their opinion.

Therefore it is obligatory to maintain the state of unity between the Muslims as much as we are able to.

To the extent that following the Imaam in Duaa’ Khatm al-Quraan is not blameworthy. It has been narrated that Imaam Ahmad [may Allaah be Pleased with him] Duaa’ Khatm al-Quraan, and others from the people of knowledge, were of the opinion that it is recommended to make Dua’a upon completing the Quraan before one makes Rukoo’. We say, there is nothing to prove this from the Sunnah; however, as long as this is Ijtihaad from an Imaam then we must respect it as it is his Ijtihaad. Irrespective of whether his Ijtihaad is right or wrong; as long as he isn’t calling us to do something which is outright Haraam. How can we strip people of knowledge, or label them, or accuse them of mistake or brand them as innovators merely because we don’t agree with their opinion!?

As long as you have no option but the person you are praying behind does this, then there is no harm in following him in this.

Let’s take the example of an Imaam on how they dealt with differences of opinion and the importance of unity. Imaam Ahmad [may Allaah have Mercy on him]  was of the opinion that making Dua’a al-Qunoot behind the Imaam in the Fajr prayer is an innovation, however he issued a Fatwaa saying that if one is praying behind an Imaam who believes it to be Sunnah to make Dua’a al-Qunoot in the Fajr prayer, then pray behind him and even more; say Ameen to his Dua’a.
All of this is in order to uphold the sense of unity between Muslims, unified with one heart and to block any path that leads to hatred of one another.

Explanation of Boycotting and Not Giving Salaam to Sinners/Innovators

Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

Boycotting is of two types: boycotting in order to rebuke so that the person would give up their bad deeds.

However, this type of boycotting is on the condition that one is able to bring about change, and that one is not unable to benefit them. If the people of innovation and sin are plenty and ones’ ability to change their practices by boycotting is feeble, then boycotting them is not applicable.

He then continued:

If you have power over them and boycotting the people of sin and innovation will enable them to change, then boycotting and abandoning them is a form of punishment will bring about a greater benefit.

A principle:
-         -If one does something bad but the good is greater, then doing this bad action in actuality is not a bad action.
-         -If by doing a good action there is no greater benefit then doing this good action is not a good action, rather it is a bad action.

Therefore, boycotting and abandoning innovators can either be productive, such as the sinner leaves his sin or the innovators leaves his innovation - then this objective is praiseworthy, as he is forbidding the evil and bringing about punishment upon those who deserve it. By it also, he strengthens al-Emaan, righteous deeds and he increase its people.

However, if boycotting or abandoning them doesn’t bring about any rectification, rather it only increases the people of truth in alienation and resentment towards al-Emaan and the Sunnah, then this boycotting is not correct. They are not achieving anything by this. Rather, they are creating more harm as they are doing something which has not been commanded, as Imaam Ahmad said about the Jahmees in Khursaan, “Boycotting them in Khursaan only increases the Jahmiyyah.”

If one is unable to bring about rectification by boycotting them, then the order to boycott no longer stands. In fact, their attempt to remove harm (sins, innovations etc.) via boycotting only makes the believers weaker and at times, it could only increase the bad-doers in proof and number.

How to Deal with the Differences that Occur Between the Salafees

The Salafees have differed in sub-divisional rulings but they have not differed in their principles (i.e. to follow the Quraan and the Sunnah with the understanding of the Salaf). Their Usool (principles) are well-known and established. However, concerning certain current-day rulings the Salafees have differed. An example is the ruling on a particular individual; so what does the Salafee do in these particular examples of Ijtihaad where the scholars have differed?

We are aware on how to engage with those who aren’t Salafee, the scholars have explained in how to interact and deal with them; with justice and fairness and the Principles of the Sharee’ah.

However, the problem we face now is when the Salafees themselves differ.

If a well-known scholar who is known to have expertise in this field places a ruling on a particular person, stating that such a person is from the people of innovation, and no one from the people of knowledge differed with him then we cannot doubt his ruling on such a person. We take the statement of this scholar, especially if no one differed with him and this is how the Salaf were (and something well-known in al-Mustalah al-Hadeeth). If Imaam Ahmad, for example, stated that such and such person is a person of innovation and there was no opposition to this, then the statement of Ahmad is accepted and acted upon.

But what do we do if the scholars differed?

If the scholars differed about an individual; firstly we look at the situation. If we have one that does Jarh and the other does Ta’deel then we take precedence to the one who has more information. It may be that the one with Jarh has more information but the one with Ta’deel praises a person because this is generally what is apparent from him. The opposite is also true. It may be that a person does Jarh, such as doing Jarh upon a person who was known to be a Hizbee, but the one who does Ta’deel does so based on new information, such as him making Tawbah. So the principle here is; we take the ruling from the one who has (and presents) more information.

If the scholars differed, then I have always said and I say again so that you may understand: differences between well-known Salafee scholars in such affairs have causes:

1)      They differed in the authenticity of the information. It could be that a person presents information to a scholar and the scholar accepts it and makes a ruling based on this, then he is excused even if he is wrong. It could be that the scholar who issues a different ruling has different information presented to him, and likewise, he is excused also if he is wrong.
2)    It could be that there is a misunderstanding. It could be that a scholar praises or dispraises a person but the Salafees differed on their understanding of the speech of the scholar.
3)     Differences can arise on the importance of the statement of the scholar. This is the third scenario - the Salafee agree that the information is correct and they all have the same understanding but they differed is the Shaykh talking about a mistake of a person or is it Jarh thus warning against him? Meaning, none of the Salafees deny that the scholar has said something, but the Salafees differed: some believing that the scholar has declared the person as doing an innovation whilst others have understood that the person being talked about has made a mistake, but not necessarily an innovator.

I do not know any scholar, from those who we know - those who are Salafee and from Ahl as-Sunnah – that does Jarh or Ta’deel based on desires, oppression or having a personal agenda. Never! But the differences between them occur because of the aforementioned causes.

So what is our stance?

Upon us is to fear Allaah as much as we are able and to follow what we think is the closest to the truth.

We do not follow a particular opinion because of the one who issues it.

Likewise, we do not follow our own opinions – whether we like something or not.

It is upon us to fear Allaah as much as we are able and follow what is apparently closest to the truth. These are matters of Ijtihaad therefore we can’t force one to follow the opinion of another.

The problem we face with the Salafee youth today is that if a particular scholar issues a statement and another scholar says something different, then it becomes binding to follow the opinion of the first scholar. It is not like they say to themselves, “Let’s look at the difference of opinion and follow which is closest to the truth based on its evidences”. If you were to say this they would say that you have doubts about the Manhaj and the scholars!

Rather, such people are those who have doubts, because here we are talking about Ijtihaad between well-known scholars. Therefore, it is upon us to follow the truth and the principles of Sharee’ah in this. With this, we don’t take the statement of one over another (except if they have stronger evidences).
We cannot say, “If you don’t follow the Jarh about a person (that our scholar has made Jarh upon) then you will become Majrooh (dispraised) as well!”

Or some of them say, “If you don’t do Jarh on a particular person (that our scholar has made Jarh upon) then you will become Majrooh (dispraised) as well!”

All of us know that your brother is following something to the best of his ability.

These are some of the principles (Usool) and division and it is a must that you know about this. It is obligatory for you to know how to deal with differences so that you avoid differing yourself or causing differences between the Salafees. These are issues of Ijtihaad but have differed the Salafees without them differentiating the different principles mentioned here.
Someone may say that he is supporting the truth that is apparent to him.

We say: this is correct but he must do so with principles and etiquettes that have been mentioned here.

Some of the Salafees have become hard-hearted because of busying themselves with these matters of Ijtihaad.

Some of the Salafees have even created sub-parties within each other. They say these Salafees are with us and those Salafees are against us!

This is in reality is not right.

One of the brothers from another country informed me of something similar the other day, so I advised them to preserve brotherhood, their rights and their virtues and not to make sub-parties, “us and them”, but we must be united.
Bearing in mind all of these are sub-issues and the Salafees have not differed in their principles!

Also, some Salafees have even created labels for others. Shaykh such and such, if he is with them in their opinion, then such a scholar is an upright scholar. Thus the truth is always with him.

If another scholar disagrees with him, then he has Tamyee’ (softness), meaning he is a scholar but he is not upright in his Manhaj.

Likewise we find those who are extreme and harsh in making Jarh and they find opinions of a scholar confirming what they want to hear, they will say such and such a scholar is just.

We are not aware of any of these labels for scholars. We have never heard of this being amongst the Salafees before, never!
This is especially the case if the Salafees differed in sub-issues and not their principles. It is upon us all to be wary of this and for us to cooperate with one another with the principles of the Sharee’ah.

Give the people of status their due status and seek the truth and follow it with the intent to unite the people of truth with the truth.

The Meaning of Sitting, Walking or Accompanying Innovators

Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said in his Usool as-Sunnah:
“Do no sit with the people of innovation and desires. “
Shaykh Rabee’ bin Haadee al-Madkhalee [may Allaah Preserve him] said in explanation:
The evidence for this is:
And when you (Muhammad) see those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Qur'an) by mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shaitan (Satan) causes you to forget, then after the remembrance sit not you in the company of those people who are theZalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.).” [al-An’aam 6:68]
Meaning, do not sit with them, because in actuality they mock the Book of Allaah and speak about Allaah without knowledge.
Therefore, innovating into the religion is of the same severity of mocking it. So it is obligatory to detach yourself from those who attribute such falsehood to the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Messenger. The Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said:
“If you see those who always talk about the ambiguous Ayaat, then they are those whom Allaah has named (in Suraah al-Imraan 3:7), so be warned against them.” [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (4547)]
And,
“There will be a group from my Ummah that will come with an interpretation that neither you or your forefathers were aware of, so be warned against them.” [Reported by Muslim (60)]
These evidences are applicable to sitting with the innovators. They are ignorant and mock the religion and they mock you. However, if you have textual proof and are able to refute them with it, then there is no harm in sitting with them for this purpose.
As for sitting with them with the purpose to mock the religion with them, or to believe them in their innovation, or to love them or support them etc. then this is a big mistake and a form of misguidance. So it is upon the one with any sense to abstain from them.
[Sharh Usool as-Sunnah of Imaam Ahmad (Pg.8)]
Shaykh ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin Naasir al-Baraack [may Allaah Preserve him] said:
Sitting with innovators and engaging with them in their falsehood are ways in which people are misguided and misguide others by. Sitting with them without refuting or objecting to their innovations suggests that the one accompanying them is pleased with their falsehood.
So whoever is not able to refute or object to their innovations must not sit with them. Rather, sitting with them would be considered as a sitting that is a sitting of disobeying Allaah.
As for those who sit with innovators in order to refute their falsehood, from the different levels of innovations of Kufr, Bid’ah and sin etc. then such a ruling differs depending on the situation and objectives.
Therefore, sitting with them may be recommended; such as a person who has knowledge and wants to give them Da’wah but this is on the condition that he doesn’t fear harm for himself or his religion.
It may be Makrooh to sit with innovators or it may be Mubaah, all depending on the consequences and the situation.
It may be that sitting with innovators is Haraam if by sitting with them would lead to corruption of one’s religion and understanding.  It may also be Haraam if the person is taken as an example and is seen sitting with them.
Sometimes, abandoning the people of innovation and sin maybe in order to be saved from their evils and corruption, but at times it may be as an act of rebuking them for their misguidance (so that they may take heed), and proclaiming innocence from them.
So the narrations that have come from the Salaf warning against sitting with innovators have all come with the understanding that they feared for themselves from the evils of their innovations and misguidance –fearing that they would be influence if they sat with them.
As for most people nowadays, they do not have knowledge or strength in Emaan in order to refute and reject innovations and misguidance.
So as the saying goes, “Precaution is better than cure.”
And Allaah Knows Best.

Jarh wa Ta'deel: If the Scholars Differ About the Same Person

Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbaad al-Badr [may Allaah Preserve him] was asked:

Question: There are some people asking about al-Jarh wa at-Ta’deel; if recognised scholars differed in al-Jarh wa at-Ta’deel - one scholar praising whereas another dispraises the same individual, there then remains a difference of opinion between Ahl as-Sunnah. So if a person blindly follows the opinion of one of the scholars, or agrees with opinion of the scholar because of the evidences he has presented (without blindly following him), do we refrain from labeling this person because he is trying to follow the opinion of a scholar?

Answer: Firstly, al-Jarh wa at-Ta’deel has traditionally been used to verify narrations by the scholars. For this reason, the books of men are full of examples of scholars talking about its narrators – “such and such person is like this”, or “such and such person is like that”. There are plenty of examples of scholars praising narrators and dispraising others.

However, it may be that those who praise are not aware of the reason why a person has been discredited and those who discredit may not be aware of the reason why those who have praised. So each scholar speaks according to what is apparent to him.

Sometimes some discredit on issues which doesn’t necessity a person being discredited over. This doesn’t count as Jarh. Some of them became very stern on making Jarh and made Jarh of people on issues that didn’t necessitate Jarh.

However, what is a must to know is that al-Jarh wa at-Ta’deel was traditionally discussed in order to verify narrations, that which is authentic and that which isn’t. This is how the science of al-Jarh wa at-Ta’deel was traditionally used.

As for al-Jarh wa at-Ta’deel nowadays, and becoming preoccupied with it, talking about people, chasing their mistakes and chasing what has been said about such and such people, gathering information against him - this all leads to one being warned against; all of this are not actions which befits dealing with a Muslim, someone who knows the truth and acts upon it. If a person is known to be from the people of innovation and this becomes apparent from him and shares their methodology, then this person becomes eligible to be talked about.

However, as for those who make a mistake and based on this mistake the whole world is brought upon him and is then warned against, then this is not from justice or fairness.

'Uthaymeen Gives Two Benefits in Manhaj

On the authority of Saa’ib bin Yazeed who narrated:

I was sleeping in the (Prophet’s) Masjid when a man woke me up abruptly. When I awoke, I saw ‘Umar bin al-Khattaab who said, “Go and bring those two men to me.” When I summoned them both to ‘Umar, he asked them both, “Where are you from?” They replied, “From Taif.” ‘Umar said, “Had you both been from the people of al-Madeenah, I would have punished you both. Do you raise your voices in the Masjid of the Prophet – Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him?”

[Reported by Miskhaat al-Maasbeeh (744); its origin is in Saheeh al-Bukhaaree (470)]

Shaykh Muhammad bin Saaleh al-‘Uthaymeen [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said in explanation:

Here we have at least two lessons:

Firstly, One cannot have a ruling placed on him until the situation is clarified and (if he has made a mistake) until the proof is established upon him. This is because ignorance is an excuse.

Secondly, not all mistakes are of the same level. Some are far worse than others.

Jarh Without Advising Is Not From Salafiyyah

Questioner: May Allaah Grant you with good - person of Honour, the questioner is asking: In current times the use of insults like, "Such and such person is not (or no longer) Salafee" or "He is not from the Salafees". Do such expressions dictate that the person being talked about has become an innovator? Or is it a must that the evidences for his mistakes must be clarified before placing such a ruling on him?

Answer: By Allaah, I warn against such insults. Alhumdulilah, the children of the Muslims and the students of knowledge, all of them are upon goodness - all upon the 'Aqeedah of the Salaf. Even if some of them are deficient in certain areas or have ignorance, they can't be casted out if Salafiyyah because of this.

Such insults are not permissible; between Muslim brothers, students of knowledge and the children of the Muslims in the lands of the Muslims.

None of these insults are permissible.

One must advise if they see a mistake in their brother, then advise him.

As for claiming others as not being a Salafee then the claimant most likely doesn't even know what Salafiyyah truly is.

Some claim to be Salafee but in reality don’t actually know what it really is.

If you were to ask him what Salafiyyah truly is, he won't be able to tell you.

Who Are The People of Hadeeth?

Imaam ar-Raamaharmazee[1] [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said in describing Ahl as-Sunnah:

There are group of people who are adversaries to the people of Hadeeth and have abhorrence towards them. They concoct allegations against the People of al-Hadeeth and even claim that they are sinners - exceeding all bounds in their accusations against them.

However, Allaah has Honoured the Ahaadeeth (Pl. Hadeeth) and its people and has given them status. They possess the highest of ranking. They are the ones who are able to place a ruling on all issues and the ones who possess the most virtuous of knowledge.

They are raised in their mentioned and they are the guardians of Hadeeth.

Their understanding of the religion is pure and are beacons of reasoning, so how can anyone not love them for the honour they have been given? How can one not want to be raised in their ranking, just like them?

They are the ones who protect this Ummah from losing their religion. They spread information that has been revealed upon a Prophet. They decipher for them what is abrogating (Naasikh) and what is abrogated (Mansookh). They rule for the Ummah upon what is clear (Muhkam) and clarify what is not (Mutashaabih).

What an acclaim they hold with Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted, as they are bearers of the Messenger [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him]!?

They transmit His Sharee’ah and uphold its identity. They explain its symbols and establish its proofs.

They proclaim its virtues and respect its people.

They leave behind praiseworthy conducts and their demeanor is that of the Prophets. Their station is that of the pious and they inform us of the martyrs and sincere ones (as-Sideeqoon).

They express in their works every aspect of the life of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him]; his residence, his travel, every moment of his waking and that of his sleeping nights.

His every movement and every utterance, his louder speech and his silent whispers, his eating and his drinking, his clothes and his transportation, what made him joyous and what angered him, what he rejected and what he accepted, to the extent that the limit of his nail clippings and what he used to cut them with has been clearly recorded.

How he spat and what he spat in, what he used to say when he used to do certain actions, what he did in public and what he did in private – all of this illustrates the respect and status they gave to the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him].

The recorded everything back to him with chains of transmission. So whoever knows al-Islaam in its true reality and have a true reverence for the Messenger of Allaah, will realize that is it obligatory upon them to honour his status, make high his mention, make clear his message and illuminate his many virtues.
That they must refrain from insulting this party of the Messenger of Allaah, rather they must follow the revelation and preserve the religion by following its narrations and rulings – by the Quraan, that which declares their mentioning as He, the Glorified and the Exalted Said:

{وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُمْ بِإِحْسَانٍ}
“and also those who followed them (i.e. the Companions) exactly (in Faith)” [at-Tawbah 9:100]

So if you want to have a connection with the generation of the Companions, then you will not reach them except through the People of al-Hadeeth, who are the true representatives of them and that you ally yourself with them.

As for any other group other than them, then Allaah Knows Best about them.

[al-Muhadith al-Faasil (1/162)]

[1] He was the Imaam, the Haafidh, the Muhaddith - Aboo Muhammad al-Hasan bin ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bij Khallad ar-Raamaharmazee. He was the first one to ever to write about the Sciences of Hadeeth (‘Uloom al-Hadeeth) after he and Imaam az-Zuhree were ordered by the ruler at that time, ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul-‘Azeez to do so and what an amazing book he wrote. He used to say, “The Salafee cannot let his life go to waste.” He passed away around 360AH in city of Raamharmaz in Persia. [Summarised from Siyaar ‘Alaam an-Nubalaa’ (16/73-75)]
