Makkah Imaam on Those Who Spread Negativity in What Befalls the Believers

The Noble Shaykh Saaleh bin Muhammad aal at-Taalib [may Allaah Preserve him]
Imaam and Khateeb in Masjid al-Haram, Makkah

All Praises are due for Allaah, the Lord of the creation. Ar-Rahmaan, ar-Raheem. Master of the Day of Judgement.

I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allaah, having no partners, for Him is the Dominion, the Lord of Clear Truth.

I bear witness that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger, the truthful and trustworthy one. May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him, his family, and all of his Companions.

To proceed:

Surely, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with its men, its resources and its establishments, have put forth an enormous effort in order to cater for the needs of the Pilgrims – those coming to preform Hajj, ‘Umrah and visiting of religious landmarks. For decades this country anticipates the season of Hajj with a generous budget and employment of increased manpower, an exertion that any country would be proud of. None of this can be belittled nor negated in the event of an accident caused by overcrowding, or the accidental pushing of some of the pilgrims or the decision of some of the pilgrims to violate governmental guidelines and instructions.

It may be that such accidents occur, not due to the oversight of the authorities, rather it be that Allaah, the Most High, has Decreed that He has Chosen for some of His Slaves to be taken as martyrs, taken in the best possible situation – in a virtuous place, whilst others sustaining injuries in which they may be heavily rewarded in enduring.

Based on all of this, blaming the authorities who have put forth such an endeavor and have exceeded in its accomplishments is not acceptable. All of this just leads to resentment and others boastfully claiming a supposed superior degree of skillfulness.

The implications of such negativity include a negation of reward for those who have been afflicted. Rather those who busy themselves in criticizing, only criticize with a worldly objective or in order to take advantage of some political gain.

The Kingdom - and all Praises are due to Allaah - is more than able to manage the annual Hajj, without any need for assistance. It has been blessed by Allaah with a sovereignty that is led by the Custodian of the Two Noble Masjids. Its constitution is founded with the objective of governing under a Devine directive. The produce of such foundations has effected and continues to affect the two Holy Masjids.

For instance, Allaah has Surrounded His House and His Slaves with peace and serenity during times in which the world is experiencing an increase intensity of chaos and disruption and being burnt from the fire of tribulations and war.

And all Praises are due to Allaah, the One Who has enabled the truthful ones from His Slaves to protect His Religion and His Sanctified City. And by them, the Muslims and the lands are in turn protected.

Have they not seen that We have made (Makkah) a sanctuary secure, and that men are being snatched away from all around them? Then do they believe in falsehood and become ingrate for the Graces of Allah?” [al-‘Ankaboot 29: 67]

Likewise we thank Allaah for His Bounty upon us in enabling us to complete the Hajj, catering for hundreds and thousands of pilgrims. Surely, we are saddened by the accidents that occurred yesterday (10/12/1436 - 24/9/15), a Decree of Allaah that effected some of the pilgrims - an incident which caused an unfortunate stampede in Minaa; but with this, we do not say anything except that Pleases our Lord, without gaining His Anger or displeasure in His Decree.

It is imperative that we investigate the causes so that such accidents do not reoccur. Those who were negligent must be immediately held to account, so that the efforts of the hundreds within the task force are not undermined. They are those who have given all in order to serve the Guests of ar-Rahmaan and have shown extreme kindness to the pilgrims, being with them in every step of the Hajj. They have made the pathways safe to cross, they navigated the crowds, treated the sick, given direction to the lost, gave religious guidance to the ignorant, fed the hungry, quenched the thirsty and been of serviced to the helpless. These are those who have been at the forefront of appeasing the desperation of the pilgrims, thus being deserved of recognition, commendation and our supplication and beseechment to Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted, for them. Their hard work is not hidden and most of it is clear for the people to witness. So may Allaah reward them and multiply their recompense.

From the corruption of the adversary is that they use accidents and tribulations that befall the people, in a chance and an opportunity to raise doubts. They use it as propaganda to belittle the hard efforts of others.

The whole world is witness to the remarkable endeavors and the substantial budget set aside for the Hajj. The Guests of ar-Rahmaan have been welcomed with by the organizers and the general public alike.

However, they behave in this manner because in the absence of shame, morals cease to exist and one is led to act however he pleases. From the bitterest forms of satire is that they use the pilgrims and martyrs as pawns to lament their objective.

Meanwhile, their history is full of atrocities committed within the Haram! They bombarded the Haram in Makkah, killed its worshippers and used explosives within the Haram itself. Despite being a holy sanctuary, they brought within it weapons, casted horror into the hearts of the pilgrims, and even threatened to take their lives and possessions. All of this to fulfill their ghastly objective - to try to prevent the people from performing the pilgrimage safely[1].

What is strange is now they want to create manufactured tears in the name of the victims of these accidents.

They display eagerness in protecting the blood of the pilgrims, despite the fact that they have funded tens of militia in Iraq, Yemen and Syria in order to kill thousands of innocent Muslims. They have driven out millions from their homes, and have gathered for themselves heavy artillery which they have now spread throughout the lands of the Muslims in order to kill them.

They have instilled hate into the hearts of those who have been deceived by them.

May Allaah Protect the Muslims from the evil of these people, and guide those who have been led astray and deluded by them.

They are those who dance in the event of killing and injury, and are at the forefront of displaying joy and happiness when such incidents occur. They drop on the Muslims the veil of at-Taqiyyah[2], using it as propaganda to spread their doubts.

Clear daylight is surely visible for those who see with both eyes[3], and those who have been given by Allaah the ability to fairly analyze the truth from falsehood.

They scream desperately and their objectives are exposed. As every day goes by, they do not increase except in disgrace. No accident takes place except that they show mischief. Whenever something bad befalls the Muslims, they always welcome it with happiness and delight. They want sorrow to spread amongst the Arab lands and the Muslims as they want you to be suppressed.

[Khutbah entitled Fadl al-Ayaam al-Ma’doodaat, 11/12/1436 – 25/9/2015]

[1] The Shaykh is referring to the attempted-hijacking of the Haram by Iran-led Shia’s in 1987. This began as a Shia protest but a confrontation with the Saudi authorities led to a stampede which killed over 400 people and injured thousands. Even more despicable is the action of the Qaraamitah (commonly known as Ismaeeli’s today), a Shia sect that stemmed from Koofah in 317AH. Its leader was a man named Sulaymaan bin al-Hasan al-Qarmitee that took over the Haram and killed the Hujjaaj whilst they were performing Tawaaf. They threw the dead bodies in the well of Zamzam and corrupted its water. But before that, on the eight day of Hajj they slaughtered the masses in Minaa on the 8th of Dhu al-Hijjah (the first day of Hajj) and called this an act of sacrifice. As they left, they stole the black stone and took it with them to Koofah. As the stone was being liberated by the following Caliphate that took power, they refused a hand over the stone and opted to smash the stone into pieces instead. [see al-Bidaayah 37/15-39]
[3] A simile given by many of the scholars in reference to ad-Dajjaal. He is the impostor and only sees with one eye, as for the Muwaahid, he is able to see clearly with two eyes and is able to decipher the truth from falsehood by it. [TN]

The Guests of ar-Rahmaan

It is narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Umar (May Allaah be Pleased with him and his father) that the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) said,

"The pilgrim doing Hajj or 'Umrah are from the guests of Allaah. They supplicate to Him and He Answers them and anything they ask for, He Gives to them."

[Reported by Ibn Maajah (2888) and classed as Hasan by al-Albaanee in as-Silsilah as-Saheehah (1820)]

The Reward for an Accepted Hajj is Nothing but Jannah

It is reported on the authority of Ibn Ma’sood [may Allaah be Pleased with him] that he said that the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said,

“Follow one Hajj after another and follow one ‘Umrah after another - because they both nullify poverty and sins like the bellow of the blacksmith destroys iron, silver and gold.  And the reward for an accepted Hajj is nothing but Jannah.”

[Reported by at-Tirmidhee (738); an-Nas’aaee (2584) and classed as Saheeh by al-Albaanee in Saheeh al-Jaami’ (2901)]

“Follow one Hajj after another and follow one ‘Umrah after another”: at-Teebee [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said, “This means, if one of you does Hajj, then make ‘Umrah. If one makes ‘Umrah, then make Hajj (i.e. a continual cycle of pilgrimage).”

“…nullify poverty and sins…”: This includes physical poverty as well as the metaphorical form of poverty – giving enrichment of the heart.

“And the reward for an accepted Hajj is nothing but Jannah”: It is said this refers to an accepted pilgrimage which is defined as a pilgrimage which doesn’t involve any sin, this was stated by an-Nawawee and something similar was stated by al-Qurtubee and as-Suyootee.

There is No Talbiyyah or Takbeer Except With Glad Tidings

It is narrated on the authority of Aboo Hurayrah [may Allaah be Pleased with him] that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said,

"The pilgrim does not make at-Talbiyyah, except that he is given glad tidings. And there is no person who says Allaahu Akbar, exalting His Name (and raising his voice with them both) except that he is given glad tidings ." It was asked, "Glad tidings of Jannah, O Messenger of Allaah?" He replied, "Yes."

[Reported by at-Tabaraanee in Mu'jam al-Awsat (7779) and classed as Hasan in as-Silsilah as-Saheehah by al-Albaanee (1621)]

In another narration, "The pilgrim does not make Tasbeeh (سبحان الله) nor Takbeer (الله اكبر) except that with every Tasbeeh and Takbeer he is given a glad tidings." [at-Tabaraanee in Mu'jam al-Awsat (5451)]

A Sign of a Good End Depends on the Final Deed of the Person: Dying in Whilst Worship is Cause to Enter Jannah

On the authority of Sahl bin Sa’d [may Allaah be Pleased with him] said that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings be upon him] said, “Verily, all actions are judged by the final ones.” [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (6607)]
Al-Haafidh ‘Abdul-Haqq ash-Shabeelee [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said:
Know! That a sign of a bad end – may Allaah protect us from such – will not afflict someone where his outer-deeds are steadfast and his inner-self (i.e. thoughts, intentions and acts of worship of the heart) is pure.
A sign of a bad end is where a person’s intellect is corrupt and his inner-self has firm intention to commit major sins and translate such intentions into his actions.
It may be that a person has these intentions right up until the point of death, and then he repents before his life is taken, in which case the person will be rewarded. In such a case, it could be that the Shaytaan distracts and seeks to delay the Tawbah of such a person up until the final point of his life, he repents, and thus is taken in this state (i.e. of repentance).
[The Final End and Remembering Death (Pg. 178)]
It is narrated on the authority of Hudhayfah [may Allaah be Pleased with him] that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Whoever fasts a day, seeking by it the Face of Allaah, and dies in such a state – will enter Jannah.”
[Ahmad (22235) and classed as Saheeh li Ghayrihi by al-Arna’oot]
In a similar narration reported by Muslim (5126), “Every slave will be resurrected doing what he did when he died.”

Ibn Jawzee [may Allaah have Mercy on him] said, “The person will be raised in the state he died upon – his final deed will be the deed that he is resurrected doing.” [Kashf al-Muskhil fi Hadeeth as-Saheehayn (1/751)]

It is Not the Land That Makes People Pious

It is reported that Aboo Dardaa’ wrote to Salmaan al-Farsee [may Allaah be Pleased with them both] in advice as he travelled to Palestine, “You have become pious as you have entered a holy land.” To which Salmaan wrote back in reply, “It is not the land that makes people pious, rather it’s the deeds of a person that makes him pious.”
Reported by Maalik in his Muwatta’ (2/235)
Shaykh ‘Abdul-Kareem al-Khudayr [may Allaah Preserve him], Member of Panel of Senior Scholars in Ssudi Arabia, said in explanation:
Abu Dardaa was a dear friend of his and this friendship remained strong even after Salmaan left, and this was the advice he had for him; that the land a person lives in (or dies in) doesn’t necessarily benefit a person or make him pious. Some people seek to move to a virtuous place to live and die in. Some even travel to a grave of a pious saint to fulfill this aim. However, none of this will benefit a person if his deeds are not pious.

Be Wary of Your Benchmark

Al-Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim (May Allaah have Mercy on him) said:

The benchmark for the week is the day of Jumu'ah.
The benchmark for the year is the month of Ramadhaan.
The benchmark for your life is pilgrimage of Hajj.

Ihram: A Symbol of Humility and Submissiveness to The Creator

Ibn al-Qayyim [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said in his poem al-Meemiyyah (verse 28):

They have exposed their heads out of humility
Out of humility for the One they are facing and submitting to

Shaykh Muhammad bin Saaleh al-‘Uthaymeen [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said in explanation:

“They expose their heads during the Ihraam out of humility to Allaah, the Exalted and the Glorified. This is something well known until our times today; that a person, if he wants to show respect and humility towards another person, they take off their head-wear. Soldiers take off their head-wear when they are presented in front of someone they want to respect and honour. Likewise, the Soofees take of their head-wear when they are in front of their scholars, those who are presumed to be from the friends of Allaah. However, taking off ones head-wear to show respect to a person one may meet is from the customs of the people (thus it has no Islaamic ruling to it). The one who has humility to Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted, means that they submit and are humble towards Him, as He, the Most High, says: “And (all) faces shall be humbled before (Allah), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. And he who carried (a burden of) wrongdoing (i.e. he who disbelieved in Allah, ascribed partners to Him, and did deeds of His disobedience), became indeed a complete failure (on that Day)” [Taa-haa 20:11]. It is almost impossible to find someone from those who have been prevented to have humility and submissiveness with Allaah, that they uncover their heads out of humility to Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted (i.e. they find it difficult to show humility and submissiveness to Allaah). If it wasn't for the fact that the whole of the woman is sacred for one to look at (‘Awrah) then it would be upon her to uncover her head out of honour to Allaah as well, however she (totally) remains an ‘Awrah (covered) for men thus she must remain covered. End quote. [Sharh al-Qaseedah al-Meemiyyah (pg. 25)]

Virtues of The First Ten Days of Dhu al-Hijjah

It is known that the lifespan of the members of this Ummah is the shortest in comparison the Ummam (pl. of Ummah) that came before us, as the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “The lifespan of my Ummah will be between sixty and seventy years old.” [Narrated by at-Tirmidhi and Ibn Maajah] however Allaah, the Most High, from his Favours upon us, He has given us a chance to have the deeds we do in our short lifespan to be multiplied. Therefore, our lives become blessed and increased in its virtue, as though we have lived for many thousands of years. From these is the example of Laylat al-Qadr, about Allaah, the Most High, says:

The night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months (i.e. worshipping Allah in that night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months).
[Al-Qadr 97:3]

Ar-Raazee [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said about this:

Know! The one who worships on this night is like he has worshipped Allaah, the Most High, for eighty years and the one who stands in prayer during Laylat al-Qadr every year of his life, is like the one who has lived thousands of years. End quote.

Also from the times when have a chance to be blessed and increase in your good deeds are the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, about which many Aayat and Ahadeeth have been mentioned.
Allaah, the Most High, says:

1. By the dawn;
2. By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah),
3. And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah).
[Al-Fajr : 1-3]

Ibn Katheer [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said about these Aayaat, “These Aayaat refer to the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah.”

And He, the Glorified and the Exalted, said:
…and mention the Name of Allah on appointed days…
[Al-Hajj 22:28]

Ibn ‘Abbaas [May Allaah be Pleased with him] said, “These are the ten days of Hajj.”

It is also narrated in the Hadeeth that has been narrated by al-Bukhaaree and Muslim on the authority of Ibn ‘Abbaas [May Allaah be Pleased with him] that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “There are no deeds done on any other day which are better than doing deeds during these ten.” They said, “Not even Jihaad?” He replied, “Not even Jihaad, except if a man leaves his house with himself and his wealth and he doesn’t return with anything that he left with.”

And it has been narrated on the authority of ‘Umar bin al-Khattaab [May Allaah be Pleased with him] that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “There are no days which are greater with Allaah, the Glorified, and there are no days in which deeds are more beloved to him except during these ten days. So increase in doing the Tahleel [i.e. saying Laa ilaaha ila Allaah], Takbeer [i.e. saying Allaahu Akbar] and Tamheed [i.e. saying Alhumdulillah].” [Narrated by at-Tabaraanee in Mu’jam al-Kabeer]

It is also narrated that Sa’eed bin Jubayr [May Allaah have Mercy on him], who also narrated that Hadeeth of Ibn ‘Abbaas above, that when the ten days begin then, he would increase even more in worship to the extent that no one could match him. [Narrated by ad-Daarimee with a Hasan Isnaad]
It is also narrated from him that he said, “Do not put out your lamps during these ten nights.”   Meaning, he would stay the night in worship, standing in prayer and reciting the Qur’aan.

Ibn Hajar [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said in Fath al-Baaree:

What is apparent to me is that the reason for these ten days being so virtuous is because these ten days gather all the best forms of worship one can possibly do. These include as-Salaah, as-Saum, as-Sadaqah and Hajj, and these acts of worship cannot be combined except in the first ten days of Hajj.  End quote.

Ibn Rajab [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said in Lataa’if al-Ma’arif:

Allaah, the Glorified, has placed in the acts of worship that the believers do, sense of enjoyment as they perform the rituals to the Ancient House. This act of worship of Hajj cannot be carried out by everybody on an annual basis, therefore it has been made obligatory to do this ritual of Hajj once a lifetime and thus these ten days have been made virtuous so that those who are unable to come and are left in their homes are able to contribute and take part in the blessings of these ten days. End quote.

It was asked to Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [May Allaah have Mercy on him] which are the most virtuous, the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah or the last ten nights of Ramadhaan. He replied by saying:

The first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah are the best days throughout the year, even then the last ten days of Ramadhaan. However, the last ten nights of Ramadhaan are the best nights in the year including the first ten nights in Dhu al-Hijjah. End quote.

So take note of this, my Muslim brother, and use your hours and minutes wisely because there is no telling how long you have left in your life. Repent and return to Allaah and don’t waste your time. Know that striving to do good deeds during these days is blessed and it is a sign that you are upon goodness and that you are of those who are pious, Allaah, the Most High, says:

And whosoever honours the Symbols of Allah, then it is truly from the piety of the heart.

Advice to the pilgrim after the Hajj

Shaykh Saaleh bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan [May Allaah Preserve him]
Member of Committee of Senior Scholars and Permanent Council of Research and Fatwaa.
It is upon the Muslim to fear Allaah, The Glorified, The Most High, to rectify his deeds and to repent to Him from his sins, so that he returns in a better state than he was before the Hajj. So he must return to Allaah, repenting and returning to Him.
He must protect the obligations upon him and to increase in doing optional good deeds. He must refrain from what Allaah has Forbidden, because the Hajj increases one in obedience and Taqwaa of Allaah and it opens the future (of the pilgrim) to righteous deeds and to be steadfast upon them.
As for what some people say, ‘Hajj expiates ones sins so he can do whatever he wants after preforming it because he has been purified’ then this is from ignorance and deception, Allaah’s Refuge is sought. What is obligatory is actually the opposite of this. Truly, the one who performs the Hajj, then he should be in a better state than he was before it, by following the Hajj with good deeds, repentance to Allaah, abstaining from what is forbidden and that one remains steadfast on the religion until death approaches him. Allaah, the Most High, says:
So if one returns to sinning and disobedience after the Hajj then this has an impact on the Hajj and at times it may even nullify his Hajj, such as one who does Shirk with Allaah, the Exalted and Magnified.
So Hajj increases the believer in Tawqaa of Allaah, the Exalted and Magnified and that he returns home like the day his mother bore him, free from sins as the Prophet said, “Whoever performs Hajj and he doesn’t have intercourse or sin, then he returns like the day his mother gave birth to him”.
So Allaah has taken away your sins and has accepted your repentance, so don’t return to sin after this. By doing so, this is clear loss. So it is upon you to be pleased and rejoice with this favour and to be constant in repentance (or turning to Him) and obedience to Him, the Exalted and Magnified.
It is also upon you to enjoin what is good and to forbid what is prohibited and be a guide for your people when you return to them.
Explain to them what they need to understand from the rulings of the religion. To explain to your brothers and your family, the correct path. So call to Allaah, the Exalted and Magnified, and give caution to mistakes that they have fallen into. The Most High says:
“ And remember Allah during the appointed Days. But whosoever hastens to leave in two days, there is no sin on him and whosoever stays on, there is no sin on him, if his aim is to do good and obey Allah (fear Him), and know that you will surely be gathered unto Him.”  [al-Baqarah 2:203]
At-Taqwaa is to obey Allaah, the Most High, with Light (i.e. knowledge) from Him, the Exalted and Magnified, seeking His Reward. It also means that one should leave sinning, fearing His Punishment. This is the definition of at-Taqwaa. It is called at-Taqwaa because it protects one from the punishment, so then He said:
”And Obey Allaah (i.e. fear Allaah)…”  [al-Baqarah 2: 203]
This is affair of at-Taqwaa. Fear Allaah by doing what He has Commanded you and abstaining from what He has Prohibited. Be constant on this after the Hajj, in every moment.
Then He said after that:
“and know that you will surely be gathered unto Him”  [al-Baqarah 2:203]
Meaning, you will be gathered on the Day of Judgement in front of Allaah, the Exalted and Magnified; a day when the first and the last will be gathered, on one plain, all of them standing in front of the Lord of all of creation. Barefooted, naked and uncircumcised. Then they will be reckoned for what they did and their deeds will be weighed on the scales:
Then, those whose scales (of good deeds) are heavy, - these, they are the successful. And those whose scales (of good deeds) are light, they are those who lose their ownselves, in Hell will they abide.
[al-Mu’minoon 23:102-103]
Then they will be given their records in the right hand or in the left hand, then they will be presented with the Siraat, which is a bridge that lies above the hellfire. There is nothing that will help one to cross the Siraat except ones deeds, as the Most High, says:
There is not one of you but will pass over it (Hell); this is with your Lord; a Decree which must be accomplished.” [Maryam 19:71]
Every one of us will pass it, and Allaah’s help is sought.
This is wisdom behind it is in His Statement:
“and know that you will surely be gathered unto Him”  [al-Baqarah 2:203]
When you see the variety of people who speak different languages, gather on the day of ‘Arafah, variation in their nationalities and colours, and you see the extreme crowding, then you should (also) remember Gathering (i.e. on the Day of Judgement). In fact, the Gathering (i.e. on the Day of Judgement) will be even more severe in massing. So the Gathering (i.e. on the Day of Judgement) will be an even greater gathering than the gathering of the Hajj. It (i.e. on the Day of Judgement) will gather from the first to the very last, all in one place. So if you saw the way they gathered during the Hajj, and you witnessed the variation in their languages and colours, you will also realise that they all differed in accordance to their deeds and ranks. You saw them all gathered. So this should remind you of the greatest gathering on the Day of Judgement, so prepare for it with doing righteous deeds.
Then, He says:
And of mankind there is he whose speech may please you (O Muhammad  ), in this worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to that which is in his heart, yet he is the most quarrelsome of the opponents.
205. And when he turns away (from you "O Muhammad"), his effort in the land is to make mischief therein and to destroy the crops and the cattle, and Allah likes not mischief.
206. And when it is said to him, "Fear Allah", he is led by arrogance to (more) crime. So enough for him is Hell, and worst indeed is that place to rest!
207. And of mankind is he who would sell himself, seeking the Pleasure of Allah. And Allah is full of Kindness to (His) slaves.” [al-Baqarah 2: 204-207]
So look to see which group you belong to? Are you from the group which cling to the earth and corrupt it? Or are you from those who trade themselves to seek the Pleasure of Allaah? Trade: meaning they sell themselves to seek the Pleasure of Allaah, by striving for the sake of Allaah; preforming acts of obedience, being patient in times of difficulty, to seek the reward of Allaah, the Exalted and Magnified. So look! Are you from these or them?
So it is upon you to fear Allaah, the Glorified and the Most High, and to account yourself. That you return (after the Hajj) in a state that is better than before it, so that your Hajj will be an accepted Hajj, a toiling which has been met with thankfulness (from Allaah) and an expiation for sins.
And one should not say, ‘I have performed the Hajj and I can now rely on that.’ These people are deceived by their Hajj and their deeds. These people have not performed in relation to the Rights of Allaah except something very little. And this is IF Allaah has accepted it from you! Rather, the Rights of Allaah are far greater upon you, however He, the Glorified and the Most High, Makes the little that you do into something very big. He Multiplies your righteous deeds as a virtue and a favour from Him. (And on top of this) He Admits people into Jannah from His Favour and Mercy. If we were to depend on our deeds alone then we would perish! This is because what we accomplish is very little in comparison to the favour of Allaah upon us, however Allaah, the Glorified and the Most High, is ash-Shakoor (Appreciative), al-Haleem (Enduring on peoples mistakes), al-Gahfoor (Forgiving), ar-Raheem (Merciful).
So it is obligatory upon us to have good thoughts about Allaah, that we rely upon Him, The Glorified and The High. That we go back to in a better state then before, in obedience to Him and Taqwaa, and to place ourselves in front of Him so that the Hajj has a positive impact on our lives.
That we change our manners and degree of steadfastness. That we call to Allaah in our lands, explaining matters to our brothers and our families. That we remind them of Allaah, The Glorified and The Exalted. That we order them to obey Allaah and we forbid them from disobeying Allaah, so that our Hajj is accepted, our toiling is met with thankfulness (from Allaah) and our sins expiated.
With this I ask Allaah, The Glorified and The Magnified, that He Gives us and you Strength and Acceptance. That He Makes us firm on the truth and Make us die upon the truth. That He Shelters us and you from  misguidance and al-Fitnah, from the worst of al-Fitnahs, that which is apparent and what is hidden.
May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, upon his Family and all his Companions.

Fasting the Day of 'Arafah

On the authority of Aboo Qataadah (May Allaah be Pleased with him) that the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) was asked,"What is your view on fasting the day of 'Arafah?" He replied,"I hope that Allaah Will Expiate sins for the previous and forthcoming year." The man then said,"Oh Messenger of Allaah! What is your view on fasting the day of 'Aashoora?" He replied,"I hope that Allaah Expiates sins for the previous year."

It is narrated on the authority of Zayd bin Arqam (May Allaah be Pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) was asked about fasting the day of 'Arafah and he said,"It expiates sins for the year you are in and the forthcoming year."

It is heavily emphasised to fast on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah for the one who isnt preforming the Hajj. The day of 'Arafah is the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah and it is the most emphasised day from the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. This is because the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) was asked about fasting the day of 'Arafah and he (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) said,"I hope that Allaah Will Expiate sins for the previous and forthcoming year." Based on this, it is even more emphasised to fast the day of 'Arafah than the day of 'Aashoora because the Prophet only mentioned one year of expiation (for the day of 'Aashoora).

....

(Fasting on the day of 'Arafah) has two conditions: that the fasting is done by those who arent doing the Hajj and that one is not in 'Arafah. So what is apparent (from the statement of some of the scholars) is that if one is prevented from reaching 'Arafah, such as those who are not doing the Hajj or are doing the Hajj but are stuck in traffic and cant get to 'Arafah, then fasting is prescribed in such cases. What is also apparent (from the statement of the scholars) is that of one is physically in 'Arafah but is not doing the Hajj, such as those working there and the likes, then fasting is also prescribed for them.

The pilgrim at 'Arafah should not fast and it is not prescribed for them because the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) prohibited them to fast on the day of 'Arafah. Although this narration has some weakness in its authenticity, some people fasted on the day of 'Arafah with great difficulty so the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked for a bowl of milk be sent and he drank from it whilst everyone was watching him. This was done to explain to them that they should not fast because this day, (the pilgrims) are engaging in dua' and others acts of worship. Especially that the last part of this day is the most virtuous time to make dua'. So if people were to fast then the last part of thier day will be a time of tiredness and they would not be able to make dua'. Especially if the day of 'Arafah occurs in the summer where the days are long and hot. So if one gets tired then the great benefit of this day would be lost. It is possible for one to fast another time so based on this, the correct opinion is that fasting on the day of 'Arafah for the pilgrim is Makrooh as for those not on Hajj, then it is a confirmed Sunnah.

Preparing for Hajj

Shaykh Saaleh bin Fawzaan al-Fawzaan [May Allaah Preserve him]
Member of Permanent Committee of Senior Scholars

All Praise be for Allaah, the One Who Legislated for us to do the Hajj to His Sacred House. The One Who Made it a pillar of al-Islaam.

I bear witness that there is no God worthy of worship except Allaah without any partner, He is Allaah and there is no god except Him, al-Malik, al-Qudoos as-Salaam.

And I bear witness that Muhammad is His Slave and His Messenger. He was sent to explain the symbols of al-Islaam to his Ummah, May the Blessings of Allaah be Upon him, his family, his companions who were the leaders of the leaders, and the Peace of Allaah Upon them in abundance.

To Proceed:

Oh people! Fear Allaah, the Most High, and worship Him making the religion only for Him as He has Ordered you to do so in His Clear Book.

Oh Slave of Allaah! In these blessed days, the Muslims are preparing to travel to perform the Hajj to the Sacred House, some of them performing an optional Hajj and others preforming the Hajj of al-Islaam (i.e. the obligatory one). And there is no doubt that this all needs a great deal of preparation, in wealth, health and having a firm intent. It also requires one to be prepared in his ability to spend so that he can perform the Hajj from his surplus wealth so that he doesn’t financially rely on others, as Allaah, the Most High, says:

And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-Taqwa (piety, righteousness, etc.). So fear Me, O men of understanding!” [2: 197 al-Baqarah]

So He has Ordered, the Glorified, to take precautions, this means one has enough provisions that are necessary for his ability to travel; leaving, returning, maintenance of transport and whatever provisions that are needed that will help him reach the House of Allaah, and whatever is needed to ensure his return him. Allaah, the Most High, says:

And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka'bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one's conveyance, provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of any of the 'Alamin (mankind and jinns).” [aal-‘Imraan 3:97]

‘Afford the means’ here is a conditions for ability; which means one is only considered as being able to perform the Hajj if he has enough provisions for sufficient transportation (to perform the Hajj). When people began to perform the Hajj without any provisions, they were inflicted with illnesses but they said, ‘We are those who have Tawakkul. ’ Allaah then Prohibited them from doing this and He Ordered them to take their provisions so that they won’t depend on others.

Allaah, the Most High, says:

And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-Taqwa (piety, righteousness, etc.). So fear Me, O men of understanding!” [2: 197 al-Baqarah]

When people began to think that trading and making an earnings whilst at Hajj was not permissible, Allaah, the Most High, revealed:

There is no sin on you if you seek the Bounty of your Lord (during pilgrimage by trading, etc.).”  [al-Baqarah 2:198]

Here, the Glorified, in these two noble Aayaat that is absolutely necessary that one takes what is sufficient in provisions, provisions needed in his Dunyaa such as food and drink as much as what is necessary from beginning to the end of his journey.

One must also make sure he has sufficient provisions for his Aakhirah; and this is that one travels with good deeds and making sure he distant from sins.

Then He, the Glorified, Explained that trade, seeking a living and gaining provisions is permissible and that it doesn’t contradict the fact that he has gone there for worship as long as it doesn’t become preoccupied in his time with it. Likewise trading doesn’t nullfiy ones Tawakkul (in Allaah for provision).

Therefore is necessary for the pilgrim to leave his family with what is sufficient for them in provisions (and whatever they need) for the period until his return to them. It is not permissible to leave ones family without any provisions or leave them with little provisions so that they are left with what doesn’t suffice them. In this scenario one will be sinful and he will not gain any reward as the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “It is sufficient of a sin that a man doesn’t fulfill his responsibilities.” [Narrated by an-Nasaa’ee]

Likewise, if a the pilgrim has a need to pay off a debt that he has taken or he needs to save up in order to pay back a loan. If this person doesn’t have enough wealth which will help him pay off his debt as well as preform the Hajj at the same time, then he should give precedence in paying off his debt, and it is not permissible to perform the Hajj in this situation.

Likewise, it is obligatory upon the pilgrim to spend whilst doing the Hajj from wealth that is Halaal, this will mean that his Hajj will be accepted and an expiation for his sins.

It is narrated on the authority of Aboo Hurayrah [May Allaah be Pleased with him] that the Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “If the pilgrim departs to perform his Hajj, spending from the best of his wealth and then places his foot on his saddle. Then he proclaims ‘لبيك اللهم لبيك ‘ (Oh Allaah! I am at Your Service, I am at Your Service). Then a caller calls out from the heavens saying, ‘At your service and your pleasure! Your provisions are Halaal and your transportation is Halaal. Your Hajj will be accepted and you will not be sinful in it.’ And if the pilgrim sets out with the worst of his wealth and then places his foot on his saddle and then proclaims, ‘لبيك’ (at Your Service). A caller calls out from the heavens saying, ‘At your service but not at your pleasure. Your provision is Haraam and your transportation is Haraam. Your Hajj is sinful and not accepted.’” [Narrated by at-Tabaraanee]
So spending during the Hajj, if it is from Halaal earning, is then included in spending for the Sake of Allaah, as, Allaah the Most High, says:

And spend in the Cause of Allah (i.e. Jihad of all kinds, etc.) and do not throw yourselves into destruction (by not spending your wealth in the Cause of Allah), and do good. Truly, Allah loves Al-Muhsinun (the good-doers).” [al-Baqarah 2: 195]

This noble Aayah is a proof that spending for the Hajj is spending for the Sake of Allaah, as it spending for the Hajj and the ‘Umrah has been combined in its mention with the generality of spending for the Sake of Allaah.

(Also as evidence), some of the Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them all] (once) endowed their camels for the Sake of Allaah, and with these camels a woman wanted to perform the Hajj with them, so the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] told her, “Perform Hajj on them, it will be the Hajj for the Sake of Allaah”. [Narrated in the Sunnan and elsewhere].

Based on this, some of the scholars, and it is the view of Imaam Ahmad, that those performing the Hajj are entitled to the Zakaat because they fall under the generality of ‘the Sake of Allaah’, so the Hajj is part of being Sake of Allaah. Therefore, one may give their Zakaat to those who haven’t performed the Hajj for them to perform the obligatory Hajj.

It is also obligatory upon those who want to perform the Hajj to repent and turn to Allaah from all the sins (they may have committed). If one has (ever) oppresses someone then he must go back to them and seek their forgiveness. This is because one must proceed his Hajj with sincere Tawbah from all forms of oppression. It is also obligatory (for the pilgrim) to abstain from any sins or acts of disobedience and that he must preserve his five daily prayers as well as all the other obligations upon him. This is something that is obligatory upon the pilgrim in every aspect of his life however it is even more so during his performance of this great act of worship. So it is absolutely necessary that one doesn’t enter into it (the Hajj) with any form of sin or disobedience connected to him, or whilst he is sinning or disobeying during the Hajj. Allaah, the Most High, says:

So whosoever intends to perform Hajj therein by assuming Ihram), then he should not have sexual relations (with his wife), nor commit sin, nor dispute unjustly during the Hajj. And whatever good you do, (be sure) Allah knows it. And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-Taqwa (piety, righteousness, etc.). So fear Me, O men of understanding!” [al-Baqarah 2:197]

It is also narrated on that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “Whoever preforms Hajj to the House and he doesn’t perform sexual intercourse and doesn’t sin then sins will be removed from him like (the status of) the day his mother gave birth to him.”

So having ones sins forgiven by performing the Hajj and entering into the Jannah is a consequence of having an accepted Hajj. One can only have an accepted Hajj if two factors are present:

Firstly, if one does righteous deeds; from them (includes) being helpful to people with piety, being cooperative and having good manners towards them. When the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] was asked about piety, he said, “It is good manners”. So this is extensively necessary during the Hajj, so that one can deal with the people with goodness, talking to them and treating them kindly.

It is narrated (in the Musnad of Imaam Ahmad)on the authority of Jaabir bin ‘Abdullah [May Allaah be Pleased with him] that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] said, “An accepted Hajj brings no reward except Hajj”. They asked, “And what is acceptance, oh Messenger of Allaah?” He replied, “Feeding food and spreading the Salaam (i.e. the greetings as well as not being harmful to others)”.
It was asked to Sa’eed bin Jubayr [May Allaah have Mercy on him], “Which is the best type of Hajj?” He replied “Whoever feeds the poor and withholds his tongue”.

These narrations prove that the person needs these characteristics whilst travelling, especially when travelling to perform the Hajj. Whoever perfects them will then perfect his Hajj. In general: be good to people, be beneficial for the people and be patient when they harm you, just as Allaah has described those who have Taqwaa to be. He says:

Those who spend [in Allah's Cause - deeds of charity, alms, etc.] in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger, and who pardon men; verily, Allah loves Al-Muhsinun (the good-doers).” [aal-‘Imraan 3:134]

Secondly, and this is from the greatest forms of piety (one can have) during the Hajj, to remember Allaah, the Most High, during it. Allaah, the Most High, has Commanded that He is constantly remembered during the establishment of the Hajj, especially whilst one is in Ihraam, during the Talbiyyah and the Takbeer.
So there is no greater provision that the pilgrim can take and there is nothing greater in provision than the pilgrim having at-Taqwaa. At-Taqwaa combines and brings about all forms of goodness. So it is obligatory upon the pilgrim to be sincere to Allaah in his intention whilst performing the Hajj, expelling the feelings of showing-off, seeking reputation or any form of worldly benefit.

Allaah, the Most High, says:

And perform properly (i.e. all the ceremonies according to the ways of Prophet Muhammad), the Hajj and 'Umrah (i.e. the pilgrimage to Makkah) for Allah” [al-Baqarah 2:196]

Completing the Hajj means that one complete the rituals in the manner it has been legislated.
The wording, ‘For Allaah’: means that one should be sincere in his intention, one worshipping Him Alone without falling into major or minor shirk. (It also means that) there should be no showing-off, seeking of reputation, pride, arrogance or self-importance. One should be humble is Hajj. For indeed the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] (performed the Hajj) and his cloak wasn’t even worth four dirhams (approx. £2), (despite this) he said, “Oh Allaah! Make it a Hajj without showing-off nor  reputation.”

So it is a must upon the pilgrim that they are patient with difficulties and that one doesn’t seek to be luxurious during the Hajj. Some people nowadays are abundant in splendor so they take with them many luxuries. Cars, furniture, tents that are big which take up space from other pilgrims. Others don’t (even)stay in Minaa during the Days of at-Tashreeq, they stay in furnished flats, residing outside (the bounds of) Minaa. They (try) to use as proof that there is no space to stay in Minaa.

The answer to this is that the pilgrim must seek a place to stay in Minaa. If he doesn’t find anywhere to stay, after looking, then he should stay in the closest place to Minaa. Being with the pilgrims and that he should set up a tent far away from it. Rather, his tent should be set up with the rest of the pilgrims, as much as he is able to get closer to Minaa, because this person has loss ability (to stay in Minaa). Allaah, the Most High, has said:

So keep your duty to Allah and fear Him as much as you can” [at-Taghaabun 64:16]

So it is obligatory upon the pilgrim, before he sets out to perform the Hajj, to make a record of any debts he may have, or the wealth of others or anything that he has been entrusted with. This is because if he was to die during his journey or something happens which prevents him from returning home, then by recording it, he would have left these trusts with someone who can dispose of them, and thus he is free from any blame.
So fear Allaah - oh Slaves of Allaah - and prepare for your Hajj with whatever is needed to complete it in the Legislated manner.

Complete your rituals! Be sincere to Allaah in your intentions for Allaah, whilst submitting to Him and tranquil and humble during the Hajj to Allaah.

Be kind to your brothers from the pilgrims and do not harm them. Do not make constrains for them.  Be patient upon the difficulties and whatever tires you, (because) indeed this is all from Jihaad. And Jihaad consist of difficulty and tiredness.

I seek refuge in Allaah from the rejected Shaytaan:

The Hajj (pilgrimage) is (in) the well-known (lunar year) months (i.e. the 10th month, the 11th month and the first ten days of the 12th month of the Islamic calendar, i.e. two months and ten days).

May Allaah Bless me and you with the Glorious Quraan.
