The Muslim and Technology

Shaykh ‘Abdul-Kareem bin ‘Abdullah al-Khudayr [May Allaah Presereve him]
Member of the Council of Senior Scholars and the Permanent Committee of Research and Fatwaa, Saudi Arabia
Jaami at-Tawheed, ar-Riyaadh
11/7/1435 – 15/4/2014

The abstinence from the Dunyaa of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him], his simplicity, his striving for the Da’wah, is something well-documented and books are over filled with such examples. He slept on a cushion stuffed with fibre that would leave marks on his back and so forth. So how is it possible that one exchanges what Allaah has given to us (from the various favours, including technology), preferring it over the example of the Prophet, knowing what he was like and how his life was filled with extreme scarcity?

There is no doubt that the Muslim is required to have as less as possible from the Dunyaa, as much as he is able. The Muslim should live as if they are a stranger and be sufficed with what they have to fulfill their needs.

Before cars came about, people were sufficed with camels and walking, and it would take months and weeks to reach their destination. If the journey was for a long distance, they would be away for years. Seasons would go by and they would be travelling without reaching their destination, despite this, their hearts were tranquil. Yes, their bodies would tire but they were contented.

In those days, people who would come from the east would often come carrying food and other goods. They would have utensils and tools that whenever they would pass by towns and villages they would let the inhabitants benefit from them. Some of the elderly alive today recall such practices as pilgrims from the east would come during the season of Hajj.

Today, we live in a global village, where travelling a long distance can be done in hours. Our clothes remaining clean when we reach our destination, not feeling any form of tiredness or fatigue after travelling a great distance, but what about our hearts? By Allaah, the hearts are hard!

If you want to test the hardness of the heart, then look at the manners of the people on the roads. The lack of manners (and road rage), what does this all lead to?

In contrast, look at the patience of the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him]! Sleeping on a cushion that left marks, from stern leather and rough fibre, but now, we are only satisfied with whatever is comfortable and soft. Subhaan Allaah!

The favours of Allaah will never expire, centuries have gone by and people have been doing Hajj in demanding circumstances, so it is a must that we account ourselves because the favours will never stop coming. Allaah Musta’aan (Allaah’s Help is sought).

Madeenah Imaam: Do Not Make a Human, a Weak Element From the Creation of Allaah, A Partner with Allaah!

Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-Qaasim [May Allaah Preserve him]

Imaam, Khateeb and Teacher in Masjid an-Naabwee, al-Madeenah an-Nabweeyyah

And the mosques are for Allah (Alone), so invoke not anyone along with Allah” [Jinn 72:18]

And the mosques are for Allah (Alone)’, Meaning, the earth in its totality belongs all to Allaah, so do not direct any act of worship to other than the One Who Owns the Dominion, and that is Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted.

Another meaning to this Aayah, is that all the places of Sujood and worship all belong to Allaah, He is the One Who Created them, they are deposited here and will all return back to Him, the Glorified and the Exalted. So do not do Sujood or any deed or any other act  of worship to gain the Anger of Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted. From the most Major forms of gaining Allaah’s Anger, is to fall into Shirk.

so invoke not anyone along with Allah’: meaning, do not worship an Angel or a Prophet or a pious person, do not supplicate to them or anyone else. Do not make Dua'a to them asking them of anything and do not make Dua’a of Praise that only belongs to Allaah (i.e. making Tasbeeh, Takbeer, Tahleel etc. to other than Allaah). This is because, Dua’a to other than Allaah is a major act of Shirk and is a sin that will never be forgiven unless on dies after making Tawbah from it.
Allaah, the Most High, said:

Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin.
[An-Nisaa’ 4: 48]

So He, the Glorified, is a Alone, all-Mighty over His Slaves, al-Qawee and al-Mateen[1], so do not direct your acts of worship to other than Him. Do not make a human, a weak element from the creation of Allaah, a partner with Allaah in the acts of worship. This is because, anything besides Him do not deserve to be the object of worship.

Some people travel to graves of certain pious people and leaders, believing that these deceased can either benefit them or may be a cause of harm to them if they do not travel there. So they travel to their graves and make Dua’a to other than Allaah by asking them, supplicated with words like, “Help me, oh such and such person!” or “Relieve me, oh such and such person!” These are types - Allaah Protect us - of Major Shirk which takes one out of the religion of al-Islaam and will be bound to the Hellfire for eternity if one was to die without repenting from.
He, the Glorified, said:

Verily, Allah forgives not that partners should be set up with him in worship, but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He pleases, and whoever sets up partners with Allah in worship, he has indeed invented a tremendous sin.
[An-Nisaa’ 4: 48]

Shirk is something that wipes out all good deeds, as, the Glorified and the Exalted, said:

And indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad Description: http://www.noblequran.com/translation/images/saws.gif), as it was to those (Allah's Messengers) before you: "If you join others in worship with Allah, (then) surely (all) your deeds will be in vain, and you will certainly be among the losers."” [Az-Zumar 39:65]

Even if the people who travel to the graves of these pious people were to stay there for centuries, a long time supplicating and asking the companions of these graves, they will never be able to benefit or harm them. The Glorified said:

And who is more astray than one who calls (invokes) besides Allah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls (invocations) to them?” [al-Ahqaaf 46:5]

And,

And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even aQitmir (the thin membrane over the date-stone).” [al-Faatir 35: 13]

The deceased do not possess anything, they don’t even have possession of a thin membrane so how could they provide or benefit others?

So it is upon every single human being to direct all their acts of worship to Allaah Alone, the Glorified and the Exalted. Seeking Protection and all Aid from Him, Glorified to the One Who said:
And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad Description: http://www.noblequran.com/translation/images/saws.gif) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright.” [al-Baqarah 2:186]

Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted, has Promised to Respond to those who Supplicate to Him and He is the One Who is al-Qawee, al-Qadeer (All-Able), al-‘Alee (the Most High, Honourbale, Powerful)[2], al-‘Alaa (The Most High)[3].
So how it is possible that one leaves the worship of a Lord that is Complete and Perfect in His Names and Attributes, to something that is created, deceased and decayed in their grave?

This is from the greatest forms of falsehood and strips the Lord of Lordship and entails bad thoughts to Allaah, the Honourable and the Glorified, because supplicating to other than Him implies that He is not Able to Help and Aid.
Contrary to this, if one was to direct their worship to Allaah Alone, Allaah will Provide for them everlasting happiness and tranquility, in the Dunyaa and the Akhirah.

It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah and worship none but Him Alone) and confuse not their belief with Zulm (wrong i.e. by worshipping others besides Allah), for them (only) there is security and they are the guided.” [al-A’raaf 6:82]

[Sharh Usool ath-Thalaatha, Tape 5, 25-30mins]

[1] Al-Qawee and al-Mateen both mean that Allaah is the Strong. However, al-Qawee means that Allaah is the Strong, none can overcome Him and none can reject His Decree or His Punishment. As for al-Mateen, this means Allaah is the Strong, fully able in His Actions that can never be overcome with tiredness. [See: Tafseer at-Tabaree (17/10-18), Tafseer Ibn Katheer (2/320), Sha’n ad-Du’aa by al-Khataabee (Pg. 77) and Sharh al-‘Aqeedah al-Waasitiyyah by Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (Pg. 167)]
[2] Ibn al-Qayyim said, “What the name al-‘Alee entails is that He is the High Above in all meanings. He is literally High Above (direction), all-High in Status (not debased), all-High in Power (Able and None can Reject His Command). Therefore, the one who rejects any of these implications of this name, has rejected belief in the name of Allaah, al-‘Alee.” [Madaarij as-Saalikeen (1/31)]
[3] Ibn Taymiyyah said, “al-‘Alaa means He is the Most High in direction.” [Adapted from Majmoo’ al-Fataawaa (16/72)]

Sudais: Protecting the Environment

Shaykh ‘Abdur-Rahmaan as-Sudais [May Allaah Preserve him]
3/7/1435 – 2/5/2014

Verily, all Praises are due to Allaah, Our Lord, we seek His Aid and Forgiveness and we Repent to Him, we Praise Him with all forms of Goodness.

The best thing that the day or night, humility and deeds can bring, is the Taqwaa of Allaah, the Most High. So whoever holds firm to Taqwaa will be successful and saved, and al-Baaree (the One Who Created from nothing, fashioned it with perfection, decreed its decree and it distinguished it from others forms of creation) will give them what they hoped for sought.

"And whatever good you do, (be sure) Allah knows it. And take a provision (with you) for the journey, but the best provision is At-Taqwa (piety, righteousness, etc.). So fear Me, O men of understanding!"
[Al-Baqarah 2:197]

Oh Muslims!

A distinctive feature in our Sharee’ah is that we give value to human life. We guarantee is safety, despite age and location on the planet, our history is a proof that our Sharee’ah shows the respect and value given to human life in the way our Salaf had preserved it. Preserving human life was always a paramount objective above any other, as a direct result from the understanding gained from our religion in highlighting its effects, benefits and seriousness.

The topic today - Allaah Preserve you - is about preserving the environment and its benefits. It is the ingredient for life and the universe revolves in order to protect it. So reflect, how many of the world’s water has quenched peoples thirst, how many has it benefitted its occupants, how many have been guided as a result of the environment and the extent of joy it has brought to many people’s lives?
Oh Muslims!

Surely, protecting the environment is from the branches of Eemaan, a sign of a person piety and goodness. Rather, it is more serious than that, protecting the environment is sovereignty of the religion, and a cause for our religion to have spread because of the proofs and evidences in relation to it found within our Sharee’ah.

"…and do not act corruptly, making mischief on the earth."" [al-Baqarah 2:60]

And,

"And do not do mischief on the earth, after it has been set in order"
[al-'Araaf 7:56]

Imaam al-Qurtubee [May Allaah have Mercy on him] said:

All forms of corruption and mischief, major or minor, once the land has become peaceful, major or minor, is prohibited. End quote.

[Tafseer al-Qurtubee (7/204)]

It is also authentically narrated that the leader of all mankind [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Emaan (faith) is seventy odd branches, the highest of which is to say ‘There is no god but Allaah’ (لا إله إلا الله), and the lowest form of it is to remove something harmful from the street.” [Reported by Muslim in his Saheeh (35)]

Harm here refers to anything that may be harmful in the literal or metaphorical sense.

So how great is Allaah! So how can we remove harm from all aspects of our lives? The only answer is if we have a preserved environment, pure and healthy, with no crookedness, rather its importance is even greater than this for those who seek uprightness and exemplification.

Brothers in faith!

How can we not seek to protect our environment when Allaah has subjugated the slave to what He has Created from the natural beauty and an environment that is fascinating.

"7. And the earth! We have spread it out, and set thereon mountains standing firm, and have produced therein every kind of lovely growth (plants).
8. An insight and a Reminder for every slave turning to Allah (i.e. the one who believes in Allah and performs deeds of His obedience, and always begs His pardon)."
[Qaaf 50: 7-8]

In this noble Aayaat, and many like it, the call is reaffirmed to preserve our environment, for humans, animals, birds, buildings, the air, the skies, trees and plants, agriculture and water, and everything that is between the land and seas. We are commanded to protect its beauty and organization, its power and benefits, keeping it safe and pure.

Oh believers!

Correcting the corrupt environment, rectifying the multiple benefits that exists within the creation that al-Baaree has given us, brings out a multitude of remunerations. It brings about life enjoyment in eating and the nutrition found within it, pleasure in the lives and hearts of man, attraction to the eye, a shadow and cool resting place, a source of energy and a breath of fresh air.

Rather, it is more than that. Preserving the environment is a form of magnifying the creation of al-Khaaliq (the Creator) al-Wahaab (the Bestower). For this reason, the Chosen One [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] came with whatever brought betterment for the environment, seeking to rectify and preserve its benefits and beauty. He said, “A man was once walking and found a thorn (or a branch) that could cause potential harm on the street, so he removed it and as a result, Allaah Forgave all of his sins.” [Reported by al-Bukhaaree (624)]

Likewise, he [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] warned against pollution and whatever will cause the environment to become debased, where he said, “Fear three curses! (1) To urinate on the street, and to cause corruption on the (2) streets and (3) shadows” [Reported by Aboo Dawood (26) and Ibn Maajah (328), classes as Hasan by an-Nawawee in al-Khulaasah al-ahkaam Fee Muhimmaat as-Sunaan wa al-Qawaa’id al-Islaam (1/154)]

This is a command is entirely true and its example is very precise. The Prophetic methodology is merciful, a methodology that none globally can match yet maintain its level of equality throughout the global population.

Brothers in al-Islaam!

Reinforcing the importance of preserving the environment, whether it is done with stern warnings for those who oppose or gentle reminders for those who forget, the environment will be preserved. Certainly, many countries have fallen victim to this problem, and the ignorance of people, and the harm caused by the negligent in this, has caused incomparable harm. None except a few are spared from its damage, rather its destruction has soared across the land, after once being a world full of richness, enjoyment and beauty.

Reflect, how many treasured environments have fallen prey to pollution? How many have become littered with squalor, none can withstand its stench except the one who has lost all taste and misguided himself from appreciation.

It is has been narrated on the authority of Ibn ‘Umar [May Allaah be Pleased with him] that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “There is no person who kills a small bird or even greater than it, except that Allaah, the Glorified and the Exalted, will take the person to questioning about it.” [Reported by Ahmad (6550) and Nasaa’ee (4298), classed as Hasan by al-Haakim in his Mustadarak (7648)]

He also [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] said, “Whoever cuts the lotus tree (Sidrah), Allaah will pour it on the persons head in the fire.” [Reported by al-Bayhaqee (141), Aboo Dawood (5239) and said in commenting about it, “Whoever cuts it out of idleness and play without having any need to do so.” Classes as Saheeh by al-Albaanee in Saheehah (614)]

This is warning given to the lotus tree in a tree that is very common, so how about trees that are needed for the environment? How about those who destroy rain-forests or those who pollute the air in their factories, excessive in vehicles, and the mountains of litter, overfilling sewage channels, and everything else that corrupts the environment; when cutting a common tree in order to burn its wood without any purpose except idleness has this severe punishment?

Even worse and more severe than that, and in Allaah we put our trust, putting our trust in the One Who Has Power over His Dominion and the oppressors and transgressors, those who take up their arms and weapons, nuclear, biological and gasses of poison, create explosion and widespread destruction. Obliteration that spares no man, woman, child or elderly, without there being any glimmer of mercy or humanity. They possess the acumen of wild animals that results in the slander against the environment and human life. Nothing coming of it except devastation, and a barrier against that which is good and blessed to spread, bewitched with the only intent of warfare and torture.

Oh believers!

General protection in guiding our environment to its rectification and protection, and in aiding its importance, can only be brought about if an Islaamic ethos is used to uphold the environment. This will promote responsibility and manners, awareness that Muslims have for the preservation of their country and state, the necessity of it within the community and the an appreciation for its benefits. The Ummah can only be increased in its honour only if they develop themselves and to remove anything that stunts its growth and progress.

Brothers in al-Islaam!

If the Islaamic approach to environment is adopted, explained and implemented throughout the various infrastructures in the world (at political, domestic or even individual level), its rulings and wisdom exposed to the masses, its honour and respect for human life and the environment, its care for the nature and the action it commands towards, the corruptness and poison within the global environment will alter. This is the majesty found in the statement of al-‘Azeez (the Mighty) and al-Qadeer (the Ever-Able):

"7. So whosoever does good equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it.
8. And whosoever does evil equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant), shall see it."
[az-Zalzalah 99: 7-8]

Preserving the environment is at many levels. It entails the preservation of the community, the population, the country, families, politics, the economy, human life and the natural disposition (the Fitrah). The environment has characteristics which relate to our worship, our deeds and our humanly attraction towards it.
The incomparable rectification of the environment and its compassion towards it can only stem from at-Tawheed and al-Eemaan, from the Quraan and the Sunnah that which have come to purify the masses from sins and shortcomings. It has come to purify the lands from deviations and Shirk, and from innovations, sins and all detestable deeds. It removes doubts and being excessive, and gives responsibility to uprightness and gaining of rewards.

Protecting the environment is a deed which brings the about the good manners of a person, extolling them in it and is a vice for the person to become steadfast upon the Sunnah. This is because the Islaamic methodology is constructed on empowering individuals to remove anything blameworthy from their deeds and manners. Its prohibits conflict and defiance, rather it upholds the vision of the profiting the broader community and conforming with them. Therefore, this methodology takes a person away from a shallow materialistic mindset to a broader, worshipping and empathetic one.

"204. And of mankind there is he whose speech may please you (O Muhammad), in this worldly life, and he calls Allah to witness as to that which is in his heart, yet he is the most quarrelsome of the opponents.
205. And when he turns away (from you "O Muhammad"), his effort in the land is to make mischief therein and to destroy the crops and the cattle, and Allah likes not mischief."
[Al-Baqarah 2:204-205]

Ruling on Striking, Protests and Demonstrations

Shaykh Muhammad bin 'Alee Farkous, from the scholars of Algeria, may Allaah Preserve him.

All Praises be to Allaah, the Lord of the creation. May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon the one who He Sent as a Mercy to all mankind, upon his Companions and his brothers, until the Last Day.

To Proceed:

Strikes and its various types are from the remnants of democracy, a constitution that gives the population complete control and power. So strikes, protests and demonstrations are from the principles set by democracy, which on its face value, seeks to rectify and bring solution to the problems that the population faces. They argue that protests and demonstrations find resolve to problems on political, social and employment levels. Through protests and demonstrations,  a bad situation is turned in to a good one, or from a good state to a better one.

From an Islaamic viewpoint, democracy in all its forms, is a form of equating the creation to Allaah (Shirk) in legislation. This is where the right to legislate is given to the creation, cancelling the right to legislate for al-Khaaliq (the Creator), Glorified and Just it is, to give Him the right to be the sole legislator upon the creation.

In recent times, this democratic methodology has been adopted by the secularists, applying the right for the creation to be legislators in affairs of politics, religion and similarly in every aspect of our daily lives. As a consequence, the right to legislate and deduce rulings that effect this Ummah, is given to the Ummah themselves, without any need for a ruler or consequence, and to Allaah we complain and seek assistance.

This methodology differs from the fact that the Ummah is obligated to legislate, via appointed rulers, under the scope of the Sharee'ah. It is not permitted for the Ummah to legislated anything except that which Allaah, the Most High, has Permitted.

He, the Glorified, Said:
﴿أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاء شَرَعُوا لَهُم مِّنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَن بِهِ اللَّهُ﴾
"Or have they partners with Allah (false gods), who have instituted for them a religion which Allah has not allowed. And had it not been for a decisive Word (gone forth already), the matter would have been judged between them. And verily, for the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers), there is a painful torment."
[ash-Shooraa 42 : 21]

Strikes, protests and demonstrations and anything else that stems from democracy are all practices adopted from the political systems of the Kuffaar. Something al-Islaam is completely free of. It is not from the practices of the people of faith (Emaan), that they seek or demand their rights by striking from work, even if they are asking for something which is within their rights. Striking and demonstrations only give rise to chaos. A chaos which has a widespread effect which results in discord (Fitnah), and for those who do not involve themselves to become the target of defamation and insults. All of this, and more, conflicts with the Islaamic teachings of being mannered and following proper etiquette, and to seek ones right in the appropriate and legislated manner. Namely, one should return all matters of dispute to those in authority. By doing so, one may have their problems resolved, and this is form the Favours of Allaah, the Glorified. If one doesn't find a resolution, even after returning the matter back to those in charge, then it is obligatory for the subordinates to be patient, and to keep on persisting in seeking their rights through the appropriate channels, by putting their requests again, until Allaah opens the way and He is Best of Openers (al-Fattaah).

It has been authentically narrated on the authority of 'Ubaadah bin as-Saamit [May Allaah be Pleased with him] which supports this latter point.
He narrated, "The Messenger of Allaah [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] called us to give allegiance and obligated us to hear and obey those in authority. Obey them in our activities, in whatever we dislike, in our hardships, in our ease, and that we are permitted to strip those in charge of their authority, unless if they commit a clear act of Kufr (disbelieve), then this is for you with Allaah, a proof. " [al-Bukhaaree (7056) and Muslim (4877)]

Imaam Ahmad reported the same narration with an extra wording, "Even if you opine that you have more right to rule than he does." [Musnad Ahmad (23405); classed as Saheeh by al-Albaanee in Dhilaal al-Jannah (1028)]

Meaning, even if you feel that you have more right to rule than he does, then do not act upon this inclination. Rather, remain steadfast upon hearing and obeying those in authority over you without revolting. [Explanation given by Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Baaree (10/30)]

In another narration reported by Ibn Hibbaan (4645) and Ahmad (24140), "Obey! Even if he eats your wealth and beats your back." [Classed as Saheeh by al-Albaanee in Takhreej of as-Sunnah by Ibn Abee 'Aasim (1026)]

It has also been narrated on the authority of Ibn Mas'ood [May Allaah be Pleased with him] that the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah] said, "You will witness after me discord and rulers that you will dislike."

The Companions therefore asked, "What do you order us to do in this situation?"
He [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon him] replied, "Give them their due rights and ask Allaah for your rights." [al-Bukhaaree (7052)]

Finally, I ask Allaah to make us see aright and Provide us with the ability to follow it and that we see misguidance for what it is and Provide us the ability to avoid it.
And our last supplication is, 'All Praises are for Allaah, the Lord of all the creation.'

May the Peace and Blessings of Allaah be upon our Prophet Muhammad, his Companions, his brothers and all those who follow them until the Last Day.

Good Deeds After Relief

Allah has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them [therein] their religion which He has preferred for them and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, [for] they worship Me, not associating anything with Me. But whoever disbelieves after that - then those are the defiantly disobedient.

[Surah an-Noor 24:55]

Imaam Ibn al-‘Arabee [May Allaah have Mercy on him] says in his Tafseer:

This Aayah was revealed when the Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them all] complained to the Prophet [Peace and Blessings of Allaah be Upon him] as they were scared from an enemy. Fear overtook them and they were extremely stressed out by the pressure and harm that had been placed upon them by their enemies from the Kuffaar. And then this Aayah was revealed, an Aayah that promised them a beautiful promise, that Allaah will rescue them. So as a result, Allaah gave the Muslims dominion over the Kuffaar and He gave them victory over their enemies. [Ahkaam al-Quraan 3/80]

So thank Him my brothers, turn to Him, have Tawakkul in Him, Obey Him and leave His disobedience, and remember, as the Aayah above says, those who do Kufr and Kufr here means the Kufr of being ungrateful, then he becomes of those Faasiqoon, those who deny giving thanks to Allaah, the Most High, for saving them from their Fitnah and denies all the others favours that have been given to from before. [See: Tafseer al-Qurtubee 12/279]

Al-Haafidh Ibn Katheer [May Allaah have Mercy on him] says:

But whoever disbelieves after that - then those are the defiantly disobedient.” Means after the relief of Allaah, the Most High, has come, whoever leaves off Obeying Him then he is truly a disobedient person and he has surely fallen into a great sin. The Companions [May Allaah be Pleased with them all] after receiving relief, they would be the most steadfast of people in carrying out the Commands of Allaah, the Exalted and Glorified. So their obedience led for the help of Allaah to come and the lands from the east and the west were opened for them, the support they received was indeed something major. Once they had this relief, they sought to seek the betterment for the people and for the lands that Islaam had spread in. However, this sincerity decreased after the age of the Companions thus after their generations the peoples status and honoured became degraded.

[Tafseer Ibn Katheer 6/80]
